"Katamari Forever" has most of the stages from "We ♥" for those interested. Everything except the roses stage, I believe.

I picked up Klonoa, BOF IV and the Wild Arms games just for kicks. No idea if any of them are good or hold up today
hmm. tempted to get Persona 4 but considering my aborted intentions to even start Persona 3...

Nhex, Monday, 23 March 2015 06:16 (nine years ago) link

I tried playing Persona 4 and could not get into it, and I love RPGs. I do not understand the hype.

Katamari is all-time great tho. I wonder what a current-gen version would look like.

©Oz Quiz© (Adam Bruneau), Monday, 23 March 2015 15:47 (nine years ago) link

I love Katamari so much that I bought the Vita-compatible Katamari games when they were on sale, despite the fact that I do not yet own a Vita.

I love Katamari so much that I bought Noby Noby Boy sight unseen and without hesitation. Maybe not the best choice I've ever made.

For people who like platformers, Klonoa and the Mega Man X games are worth it.

Wild Arms and Suikoden really helped define the PS1 era to me. I never played the later games in either series but supposedly the quality largely held up.

fields of salmon, Thursday, 26 March 2015 01:26 (nine years ago) link

Suikoden 3 is supposedly the best, but I got distracted during my playthru and dropped off.

Jumped on Person 4 for $5.

The Thin Blue Slime (kingfish), Thursday, 26 March 2015 07:35 (nine years ago) link

Idk if I'd say Suiko3 is the best. For me it goes something like 1>2>5>3>4. Popular opinion is probably like 2>(1 or 3)>5>4.

Question: does anyone know if there's a way to download the actual files for P.T. before it's deleted from the PSN store for people who don't yet have a PS4? I'd really like to download it to a USB drive or something as I was planning on picking up a PS4 sometime late this year. It seems asinine to not just cancel the project but scrub a widely-admired demo from the internet...

You guys are caterpillar (Telephone thing), Monday, 27 April 2015 15:40 (eight years ago) link

I don't know for sure how it will work in this case, but usually when a game is removed from PSN they still keep a copy up on the servers for people who previously bought the game so they can redownload it. So you can go to the PSN web store and "buy" the demo & checkout without owning a PS4, and this should tie a license to "redownload" the demo in the future to your PSN account. Of course Konami may want to wipe the existence of the game entirely and insist that no redownloads are allowed, and as no money has changed hands maybe the rules governing this may differ, but I doubt it.

( X '____' )/ (zappi), Monday, 27 April 2015 15:53 (eight years ago) link

Thanks for reminding me, I went and checked it out.

Nhex, Monday, 27 April 2015 15:59 (eight years ago) link

once you "buy" it, you should be able to redownload it whenever you want from your "purchase history" later on

Nhex, Monday, 27 April 2015 15:59 (eight years ago) link

OK, cool. I was hoping that was the case and did it yesterday when this whole clusterfuck was announced, but I wasn't sure if it would stick around if I hadn't downloaded it once already. We'll see, I guess.

You guys are caterpillar (Telephone thing), Monday, 27 April 2015 16:13 (eight years ago) link

hmmm apparently you can't redownload PT even if you 'bought' it, looks like Konami are going to pretend it never existed :/

Would anyone like a free download voucher for Metal Gear Solid? I just picked up the "legacy collection" compilation with the goal of catching up and being at least semi-ready for MGS V before 2020, and unless it's bundled with VR Missions (which I don't have) as a single code, I should have an extra copy of the first game to give away...

It's kind of wild, looking back, that there was a (terrible, I assume?) trilogy of reboot Spyro games in 2006-2008, with Elijah Wood as Spyro, various voices as Sparx (David Spade! Billy West!), various voices as the villain-turned-friend Cynder (Cree Summer! Mae Whitman! Christina Ricci!!!), Gary Oldman and Mark Hamill.

Andrew Farrell, Tuesday, 14 January 2020 00:40 (four years ago) link

that can't be true, can it? you just made that up, right?

Swilling Ambergris, Esq. (silby), Tuesday, 14 January 2020 00:43 (four years ago) link

After getting through the Burned Lands and the Floating Islands, Spyro and Cynder arrive at Malefor's Lair and confront him. Malefor taunts Spyro by telling him that the destiny of all purple dragons is to bring about the world's destruction, to which Spyro denies. During the confrontation, the evil dragon releases the green chain that tethered Spyro and Cynder together throughout their trials, then corrupts Cynder back to his cause. Cynder attacks Spyro, only to break free from Malefor's control when Spyro refused to fight and stated that he has left Cynder nothing to fight for. Angered by this turn of events, Malefor binds Spyro and Cynder together once again to kill them both before beginning their battle airborne. As Spyro and Cynder fly after Malefor, the Destroyer completes its circle, marking the end of the world. The three dragons fall into the volcano the Destroyer had entered, and after fighting with Malefor, Spyro and Cynder plummet into the center of the earth as they continue their battle. Malefor proclaimed that he is eternal, unable to be defeated, but is then sealed away in the world's core by the spirits of the Ancestors. Despite Malefor's defeat, the world is still falling apart. As Spyro and Cynder wonder if this is indeed the end, Ignitus' spirit returns and gives Spyro hope. With the chain that bound them together broken with Malefor's defeat, Spyro tells Cynder to flee while he stops the catastrophe, but she refuses to leave him. As Spyro prepares to unleash a powerful Fury wave, Cynder verbally reveals that she loves him. The world is rebuilt by Spyro's magic, and we last see the remaining Guardians, Hunter, Sparx, and the survivors emerging from underground into the setting sun as stars in the sky formed into the figure of a dragon.

So hey, heads up to the zero other people who still engage with videogames from two generations ago, but Sony is shutting down the PSN store for PS3 game sales on 7/1 and for Vita sometime in August (previous purchases will apparently still be available after those dates but who knows how long that will last). I'm wracking my brain to think of what I need to snag before then, since there's a good chance that PSN exclusive games will just...vanish from the earth once that happens. Which is very weird to think about. Is that the first gaming generation to feature games exclusive to a platform which are only available via that platform's store? Feels like a blow to videogame history unless someone's been emulating all of those titles. Which isn't impossible/unlikely.

You Can't Have the Woogie Without a Little Boogie (Old Lunch), Friday, 2 April 2021 02:35 (three years ago) link

Good list. I do still use my PS3 once or twice a year, my backlog is insane.
Also, didn't realize MGS1 was a voucher code in my Legacy Collection - guess I better redeem that. (Never opened it.) Not that I don't have already have various versions of MGS1 on disc elsewhere...

Shitty for titles like Asura's Wrath where the true ending to the game is locked behind paid DLC. I'd jump on that if I had the PS3 version. And all that Rock Band DLC!

Nothing on the PS3-exclusive-but not ported to any other systems list that I see is worth panic buying yet. Maybe Tokyo Jungle or Ico? Infamous 1/2 if you're one of the 10 hardcore completionist fans?

Nhex, Friday, 2 April 2021 03:31 (three years ago) link

PS3 and Vita are still my present-day consoles that I play all the time so this is a mega bummer. Aside from a handful of newfangled titles I'd like to try, I haven't felt much impetus to upgrade. At any rate, I too have an insane backlog so I should be good for a long time to come (or until my consoles die.......) even if I don't snap up many more games before the shop is kaput.

You Can't Have the Woogie Without a Little Boogie (Old Lunch), Friday, 2 April 2021 03:50 (three years ago) link

Here's a pretty good video highlighting titles which will soon be either impossible to play or, in some cases, only playable via some insanely-expensive copy of the game for a previous gen console:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w6mhjqI6EEc

And that's really just skimming the surface. It's kind of heartbreaking how many good games are gonna wind up being essentially wiped off the face of the earth.

You Can't Have the Woogie Without a Little Boogie (Old Lunch), Sunday, 4 April 2021 13:06 (three years ago) link

was thinking of futureproofing my PS3 by swapping the hard drive for a 1TB SDD, anyone else done this? looks easy enough from YT guides, but sounds like others have had the same idea, the PS3 servers have been getting hammered since the closedown announcement.

( X '____' )/ (zappi), Sunday, 4 April 2021 13:14 (three years ago) link

Swapping a hard drive in a PS3 is super easy. You can actually go up to a 1.75 TB, I believe. And yeah, I was planning to do that eventually but eventually looks like it's gonna be sooner than I thought.

You Can't Have the Woogie Without a Little Boogie (Old Lunch), Sunday, 4 April 2021 14:00 (three years ago) link

I wish they'd just let users back up PS3 downloads to an external drive. At least with Vita, I'm able to save all my game downloads to an external drive so I don't have to worry about the inevitable day when PSN no longer allows you to even download the previous gen games you bought.

You Can't Have the Woogie Without a Little Boogie (Old Lunch), Sunday, 4 April 2021 14:03 (three years ago) link

I haven't dabbled in a while, but what's the state of PS2 and PS3 emulation? From what I heard both are pretty solid at this point.

Nhex, Sunday, 4 April 2021 16:35 (three years ago) link

That video was great, btw. Made me realize just how much of the PS1/PS2 era I'm unaware of. So many strategy RPGs! I took notes, trying to figure out which ones I'll buy before July. A real shame Sony doesn't care about preserving these - at least Microsoft seems to understand the value of having the back catalog, at least for now.

Nhex, Sunday, 4 April 2021 17:04 (three years ago) link

I've bought a bunch of the PS1 titles when they were on sale for $3, should've picked up more. Maybe Sony will do another big sale before the store closes down.

Nhex, Sunday, 4 April 2021 17:33 (three years ago) link

That's what people are banking on but I wouldn't count on it. I don't think they've had sales on any PS3 titles in a year, maybe even two. And I mean they still have PSP titles marked at $30 so I'm not even counting on a general price drop.

You Can't Have the Woogie Without a Little Boogie (Old Lunch), Sunday, 4 April 2021 19:14 (three years ago) link

I dont understand the rationale behind not just fire sale-ing everything in the last few weeks of the PS3, PSP, Vita?

Surely any revenue from a PS3 game is better than none? I have a few games on disc but would be happier, just keeping the PS3 as a download only system.

I am not even sure I have the pS3 connected to a network anymore, my old Phat Ps3 died, and took most of my saves with it.

but I could easily start a few classic games if they were downloaded onto the system and I didn't have to go hunting for the disc.
