my only issue with last night's episode is that ray's speech, staring at marnie, and marnie's entirely in-character hijacking of ray's party to announce her engagement both made me cringe so hard i forgot all the lines that made me genuinely lol

also just to point out, trad sitcoms being shitty for 30 years would apparently include cheers, so please let me inform you, this means war

Shelley Long left Cheers in 1987, so not by much

cheers is a different show after shelly left, but still a funny-as-hell and often brilliant one

you want to argue about what the definition of "trad sitcom" is, fine, I was pretty specific upthread - three-camera 30-minute "situational comedy" with sets and a laugh track/audience

and no idgaf about (most of) Cheers, Seinfeld, Friends, Everybody Loves Raymond or whatever. they don't make me laugh.

Now that you know everyone else isn't defining sitcoms as narrowly, maybe your point here needs clarification:

Personally, Hannah's mom's laughing fits were uncomfortable for me cause I feel like her character might kill herself or something.

As far as whether those scenes count as funny.

eh maybe Remake-Remodel should clarify what he meant by "sitcom beats" - to me the belabored and predictable comedy rhythms of what I understand to be sitcoms are not funny

I'm figuring schwantz did a good job of defining it as was likely intended "I think what people mean by 'sitcom beats' are the set-up/knock down rhythm of sitcoms" until Remake says otherwise.

you know, i'm not to trying to stop you contributing here in any way shape or form but i literally cannot comprehend why you continue to watch a show you think is garbage and then come here to tell us about it, i literally do not understand what you get out of it, unless you get a kick out of being a grumpy sonofagun

glutton for punishment I suppose - I liked the first 2 seasons of this show a lot, at this point it's just inertia that keeps me watching

I'm not sure I really like this show anymore either, but I'm still kind of compelled to see what happens. I definitely no longer care about any of these terrible people. It's like they're trying to force every interaction into some cartoony degree of cringe-worthiness, much more than what I remember it being like in the beginning. That being said, the last couple of episodes were definitely more entertaining than the first half of this season.

find it interesting that anyone ever cared about what happened to these characters, seems like the dramatic component of this show is generally there for general mood purposes or to darken the lols

I realized when I was watching this v stoned that Jessa kind of alarms me, like I have a v mild anxiety when her character is present in a scene

bcz she seems like such a dangerous and unstable and frightening and actually potentially damaging person to have in yr life

she is awful this season

like marnie is always always awful, but jessa seems on a mission to just shit on everything this year

dunham was on scandal last night, which i dont ordinarily watch but did just for lols to see if she has any acting range beyond the hannah/tiny furniture persona

she decidedly does not and was very bad, a considerable accomplishment given how low the bar seems to be on scandal for everyone not named kerry washington

I thought Jessa throwing the bottle of wine and then being a total asshole to those guys who weren't even mean abt it was sooooo NAGL and I super hope she starts growing up/acknowledging that other ppl around her exist
