unless you define sitcoms as situation-based comedies you don't like

which appears to be what you're doing

Maybe Lex has hacked Shakey's login and is waging his war against comedy by stealth.

Minaj moron (Re-Make/Re-Model), Thursday, 19 March 2015 10:05 (nine years ago) link

my only issue with last night's episode is that ray's speech, staring at marnie, and marnie's entirely in-character hijacking of ray's party to announce her engagement both made me cringe so hard i forgot all the lines that made me genuinely lol

also just to point out, trad sitcoms being shitty for 30 years would apparently include cheers, so please let me inform you, this means war

Shelley Long left Cheers in 1987, so not by much

cheers is a different show after shelly left, but still a funny-as-hell and often brilliant one

can't argue, didn't watch the Kirstie Alley years

the increasing costive borborygmi (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 19 March 2015 11:34 (nine years ago) link

you should! some of my favourite episodes are from that era!

you guys can have you crap, I don't have to like it

you don't even have to post on this thread about it! but if you do we might engage with you about it, JUST A WARNING

you want to argue about what the definition of "trad sitcom" is, fine, I was pretty specific upthread - three-camera 30-minute "situational comedy" with sets and a laugh track/audience

Οὖτις, Thursday, 19 March 2015 15:40 (nine years ago) link

and no idgaf about (most of) Cheers, Seinfeld, Friends, Everybody Loves Raymond or whatever. they don't make me laugh.

Οὖτις, Thursday, 19 March 2015 15:41 (nine years ago) link

The Nanny, King of Queens, Mike & Molly, Big Bang Theory

To get back on track though...

Now that you know everyone else isn't defining sitcoms as narrowly, maybe your point here needs clarification:

I thought the last two episodes were hitting the sitcom beats harder than ever.

sitcoms aren't funny

Personally, Hannah's mom's laughing fits were uncomfortable for me cause I feel like her character might kill herself or something.

Evan, Thursday, 19 March 2015 15:52 (nine years ago) link

As far as whether those scenes count as funny.

Evan, Thursday, 19 March 2015 15:52 (nine years ago) link

eh maybe Remake-Remodel should clarify what he meant by "sitcom beats" - to me the belabored and predictable comedy rhythms of what I understand to be sitcoms are not funny

xp

Οὖτις, Thursday, 19 March 2015 15:54 (nine years ago) link

but maybe he's referring to something else, idk

Οὖτις, Thursday, 19 March 2015 15:55 (nine years ago) link

I'm figuring schwantz did a good job of defining it as was likely intended "I think what people mean by 'sitcom beats' are the set-up/knock down rhythm of sitcoms" until Remake says otherwise.

Evan, Thursday, 19 March 2015 15:58 (nine years ago) link

you know, i'm not to trying to stop you contributing here in any way shape or form but i literally cannot comprehend why you continue to watch a show you think is garbage and then come here to tell us about it, i literally do not understand what you get out of it, unless you get a kick out of being a grumpy sonofagun

glutton for punishment I suppose - I liked the first 2 seasons of this show a lot, at this point it's just inertia that keeps me watching

Οὖτις, Thursday, 19 March 2015 16:02 (nine years ago) link

I'm not sure I really like this show anymore either, but I'm still kind of compelled to see what happens. I definitely no longer care about any of these terrible people. It's like they're trying to force every interaction into some cartoony degree of cringe-worthiness, much more than what I remember it being like in the beginning. That being said, the last couple of episodes were definitely more entertaining than the first half of this season.

Evan, Thursday, 19 March 2015 16:07 (nine years ago) link

find it interesting that anyone ever cared about what happened to these characters, seems like the dramatic component of this show is generally there for general mood purposes or to darken the lols

hug niceman (psychgawsple), Thursday, 19 March 2015 16:44 (nine years ago) link

I realized when I was watching this v stoned that Jessa kind of alarms me, like I have a v mild anxiety when her character is present in a scene

gybe horses (Stevie D(eux)), Thursday, 19 March 2015 17:09 (nine years ago) link

bcz she seems like such a dangerous and unstable and frightening and actually potentially damaging person to have in yr life

gybe horses (Stevie D(eux)), Thursday, 19 March 2015 17:10 (nine years ago) link

she is awful this season

like marnie is always always awful, but jessa seems on a mission to just shit on everything this year

Jessa is like Skeletor-level self-aware I AM EVIL evil.

schwantz, Thursday, 19 March 2015 17:20 (nine years ago) link

I'm glad they left that part out of the opening scene.

it was in the deleted scenes obvs

slothroprhymes, Friday, 20 March 2015 19:46 (nine years ago) link

will be a blu-ray extra.

dunham was on scandal last night, which i dont ordinarily watch but did just for lols to see if she has any acting range beyond the hannah/tiny furniture persona

she decidedly does not and was very bad, a considerable accomplishment given how low the bar seems to be on scandal for everyone not named kerry washington

slothroprhymes, Friday, 20 March 2015 19:49 (nine years ago) link

I thought Jessa throwing the bottle of wine and then being a total asshole to those guys who weren't even mean abt it was sooooo NAGL and I super hope she starts growing up/acknowledging that other ppl around her exist

Also xposting from the Scandal thread but this is basically like watching a continuation of the episode where she puts on a wig and tries to role play with Adam in a bar

even my sister, an avowed Ray skeptic, had to admit his speech in the finale was a great moment for the series/humanity

It's like a digital short from the future when Dunham hosts SNL. (Or has she already? IDK)

liked the pregnancy/delivery stuff in the finale (guess they had to give Jessa something non-evil to do this season). Ray/Marnie thing still totally unbelievable to me, also lol @Pfork and Brooklyn Vegan et al being into Marnie's sub-Lilith Fair crapola

Οὖτις, Monday, 23 March 2015 22:33 (nine years ago) link

What an odd aimless grim boring season.

nashwan, Monday, 23 March 2015 22:52 (nine years ago) link

yeah it just felt really sloppy. also lol @ "6 months later" title card that is some lazy shit

Οὖτις, Monday, 23 March 2015 22:53 (nine years ago) link

what made the teacher dude fall for Hannah in the end? guess we'll never know

nashwan, Monday, 23 March 2015 23:13 (nine years ago) link

Yeah jeez that went by fast and nothing happened, how is it over already?

cannot imagine anything worse in life than jessa as a therapist

wtf I enjoyed the hell out of this season, it leaned hard on the funny, which it is good at

fuck me, archipelago (Simon H.), Tuesday, 24 March 2015 01:52 (nine years ago) link

i liked the hannah/adam scene, and i thought this season was kinda patchy but ok
