Some Mexican dude zipped by the other day on his Harley, and he was blasting some music that sounded exactly like DMB, only in Spanish.

i find it really strange that frat dudes listen to this guy and Jack Johnson. It just doesn't compute to me at all.

Having gotten to know a lot of (former) frat dudes over the years, esp in law school, it computes to me perfectly well. To the extent there was a "profile" at all, it was not the aggro, alpha-male type you see in 80s movies, it was more of a mellow, straight-laced, don't-rock-the-boat kind of guy. Nice, risk-averse, usually not severely neurotic or suffering from low self esteem, but confident only up to a certain point.

yeah maybe so. the guys I knew were mostly from northeastern colleges and maybe the frats there leaned a little more liberal than average

www.ramenclassaction.com (man alive), Wednesday, 18 May 2016 20:39 (seven years ago) link

plus it's unchallenging mid-tempo stuff that undiscerning dudes can purport to be discerning about on the basis of, like, "musicianship."

I kind of like the break in the middle of WWYS, where the band drops out and it's just guitar, and then there's a sax solo. Freed from its context, I feel like it could mesh well into a good DJ set.

dated a jam-band guy in the late 90s so i've seen dave in all his splendor. not my most pitiable concert-going experience, which might be papa roach. tbh there are a number of contenders.

This week, Dave Matthews addressed Boyd’s departure from the band for the first time in an interview with Vulture. “I have a deep love for Boyd, and he has to deal with his stuff. In many ways, I’m sure it would’ve been a lot easier for him to just say, ‘I’m good. Let’s go play.’ But you can’t just throw yourself away, your wellness away, because you play violin in a band. It doesn’t make any sense to do that.

“I can’t say, ‘I can’t wait till he comes back,’ because I don’t know what’s going to happen,” Matthews added. “But right now being away is better for him. Nobody is happy about this situation. Except that we’re happy he can figure some stuff out. I hope he does. But I’m going to miss having that whirling-dervish Adonis-Muppet over there on my right. I know the audience is, too. But we can’t serve that desire.”

Not just for Dave Matthews Band fans, Ryley Walker's The Lillywhite Sessions is a reminder that taste is subjective, timing is everything, and you don't always choose the ones you love.

reggie (qualmsley), Thursday, 15 November 2018 16:38 (five years ago) link

yeah it's pretty good! but also the lillywhite sessions is prob the best dmb album (so, of course, it was shelved so that dave could record a terrible record in a week with glen ballard)

princess of hell (BradNelson), Thursday, 15 November 2018 16:40 (five years ago) link

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bKk-EFUwsaA

this didn't even make busted stuff, which was full of re-recordings of the lillywhite sessions material, and it's better than most dmb songs imo

also the original version of "bartender" is the *best* dmb song possible i think

princess of hell (BradNelson), Thursday, 15 November 2018 17:01 (five years ago) link

don't get me wrong this band still sucks

princess of hell (BradNelson), Thursday, 15 November 2018 17:01 (five years ago) link

interesting. i'm not a fan of lillywhite sessions/busted stuff. you can tell that some of the songs were written with the same guitar patterns he'd used for sketching out songs since forever. for example, grey street is very similar to tripping billies where david matthews has written a repeating melody for everyone to mimic by moving two fingers up and down the guitar neck. the band maybe felt the initial guitar ideas they had to work from in the lillywhite session were stale. they may have also toured that material too heavily and burned out on it before recording? so they switched to the baritone guitar for Everyday and shook things up. This was the band-sanctioned narrative at the time, but I agree with it now. Everyday is way better than the other stuff they were up to.

for i, sock in enumerate (Sufjan Grafton), Thursday, 15 November 2018 18:07 (five years ago) link

... everyday is a really terrible record idgi

the band narrative was that this material was too depressing and they weren't having fun recording it. they should have less fun

princess of hell (BradNelson), Thursday, 15 November 2018 18:14 (five years ago) link

i tried everyday again but it is actually impossible to get through "i did it"

princess of hell (BradNelson), Thursday, 15 November 2018 18:29 (five years ago) link

Everyday sounds a bit like the other side of the band's collaboration on Santana-Supernatural. So it's kind of bad and annoying and awesome in the same way that Santana-Supernatural is those things.

for i, sock in enumerate (Sufjan Grafton), Thursday, 15 November 2018 18:35 (five years ago) link

yeah, skip i did it. it is annoying.

for i, sock in enumerate (Sufjan Grafton), Thursday, 15 November 2018 18:36 (five years ago) link

don't know why i'm italicizing song titles. just a quirky dave-ism, i guess.

I remember reading an interview with him once where he was talking about how much he loved oral sex and how he could survive by just drinking/eating? the fluids of women.

i think about this, and the fact that this band dumped half a ton of their own feces from a bridge and onto innocent boat tourists.

how have i never heard of this story??

Spottie, Thursday, 15 November 2018 19:25 (five years ago) link

yeah me neither wow

dude being obsessed with and gross about oral sex is unsurprising if you've heard any percentage of his music
