Given the features, "These Walls" miiight be the Colbert track.

part of me was hoping "i" was just a throwaway track lol

dyl, Sunday, 15 March 2015 22:25 (nine years ago) link

It's track 15 on a 16 track album. It may as well be.

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 15 March 2015 22:27 (nine years ago) link

Bilal!

Steph def def (Spottie), Sunday, 15 March 2015 22:54 (nine years ago) link

the album version of "i" is nearly 2 minutes longer than the one previously released, and considering that the outro is everyone's favorite part of the song, i could really see them making an effort to kinda redeem public opinion of the song with an extended version.

some dude, Sunday, 15 March 2015 23:05 (nine years ago) link

I bet the "I" in the album tracklisting is different from the "i" single that we all know of.

I might be overthinking this, but:

1. The single was lowercase. The "I" above is the capital letter, which would go along with the "U" title.
2. Usually, with iTunes, when there's a single/previously released song that corresponds with an album, the single/previously released song can be bought as a stand-alone song in the album tracklisting but with "I", no.

And yeah, different track lengths.

Tay-Tay Brooklynpants (Murgatroid), Sunday, 15 March 2015 23:09 (nine years ago) link

It's the same song, Kendrick has said as much. Likely (as sd suggested) with an extended outro.

fuck me, archipelago (Simon H.), Monday, 16 March 2015 00:33 (nine years ago) link

also, it's grown on me a lot, and it's complemented/contrasted nicely by the other tracks we've heard so far.

I'm excited for the George Clinton feature, love it when growls all over a hip-hop track

thom yorke state of mind (voodoo chili), Monday, 16 March 2015 01:14 (nine years ago) link

for yo sorrows>>>>

thom yorke state of mind (voodoo chili), Monday, 16 March 2015 01:15 (nine years ago) link

it's cool that between "King Kunta" and the Clinton feature he seems to be embracing funk with this record -- if he'd done it on the last album it might've seemed kind of obvious like oh west coast rapper signs with Dre and brings back G-funk, but it seems to be happening now as a more as a personal choice he came around to organically.

some dude, Monday, 16 March 2015 01:17 (nine years ago) link

Not to mention the Isleys sample on "i"

thom yorke state of mind (voodoo chili), Monday, 16 March 2015 01:26 (nine years ago) link

Guess that's not "funk" per se

thom yorke state of mind (voodoo chili), Monday, 16 March 2015 01:26 (nine years ago) link

I wouldn't look too much into the difference between "i" and "I". Could just be an iTunes thing.

MarkoP, Monday, 16 March 2015 01:36 (nine years ago) link

the snippets on itunes and the songs are the same. "u" and "i" are both lowercase

J0rdan S., Monday, 16 March 2015 03:29 (nine years ago) link

clean version appears to be downloadable on itunes, normal version remains MIA

slothroprhymes, Monday, 16 March 2015 03:43 (nine years ago) link

That is certainly one release strategy.

fuck me, archipelago (Simon H.), Monday, 16 March 2015 04:15 (nine years ago) link

maybe this is the normal version and kendrick has forsaken swear words, so the explicit version just has schoolboy q intermittently yelling "fuck" over the album.

some dude, Monday, 16 March 2015 04:15 (nine years ago) link

I could definitely see that happening a few more LPs down the line.

fuck me, archipelago (Simon H.), Monday, 16 March 2015 04:23 (nine years ago) link

"these walls" !

Explicit is now up, apparently.

fuck me, archipelago (Simon H.), Monday, 16 March 2015 04:26 (nine years ago) link

wait i thought everyone loved "i"

jaymc, Monday, 16 March 2015 04:29 (nine years ago) link

like, it won 2 grammys...?

jaymc, Monday, 16 March 2015 04:31 (nine years ago) link

wesley's theory is great

Maybe in 100 years someone will say damn Dawn was dope. (forksclovetofu), Monday, 16 March 2015 04:32 (nine years ago) link

that sound you just heard is the entire world unchecking the second track on itunes

fuck me, archipelago (Simon H.), Monday, 16 March 2015 04:37 (nine years ago) link

not so sure about the "this dick ain't free" interstitial but the vibe he's going for here is pretty wow

heh, yep.

"i" was pretty divisive with rap fans. it missed the top 10 of rap/R&B radio when his last album had three top 10s, a lot of people that loved all his other stuff vocally disliked it.

some dude, Monday, 16 March 2015 04:39 (nine years ago) link

goddamn, the guy wanted to make a parliament album

Maybe in 100 years someone will say damn Dawn was dope. (forksclovetofu), Monday, 16 March 2015 04:48 (nine years ago) link

vocal hooks on this album are totally my shit

"these walls" !

fuck me, archipelago (Simon H.), Monday, 16 March 2015 04:53 (nine years ago) link

plus also i need some kind of map for this record

tender is the late-night daypart (schlump), Monday, 16 March 2015 04:55 (nine years ago) link

So...did Interscope do this inadvertently and then own the mistake and release it on all platforms or did they really just pull the rug out from under Kendrick and his team on purpose?

Listening now. It's awesome. Glad it's out today. But...

Johnny Fever, Monday, 16 March 2015 04:55 (nine years ago) link

hoarse kendrick on "u" is excellent

"For Sale? (Interlude)" thankfully much better than the other one

fuck me, archipelago (Simon H.), Monday, 16 March 2015 05:04 (nine years ago) link

looking forward to marinating

the abundance of it - so long, so sprawling, so many change-ups in single songs -
like it will be a whole other record when i know it
