I really love Do It All Over Again, cause I'm a pop tart at heart

Voted for Come Down Softly to My Soul. Hits similar pleasure points as I Believe It (which I foolishly forgot to vote for), and it satisfies the gear nerd in me with that amazing Vox Continental sound...about as good as the continental sounds outside of a Fela Kuti record.

Was never big on Things Will Never be the Same. The recording drags a bit to me, and I'm not really a fan of Pierce's occasional attempts to do snarly 'tough' rock vocals. This live version from Spacemen's 2nd Euro tour sounds pretty lively though (at about 11:20): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NxrrL95TLj8

missed voting on this, probably would've gone summat like this:

1. playing with fire
2. pure phase
3. perfect prescription
4. laydeez and gentlemen...
5. toss-up between fucked up inside and dreamweapon

1. rollercoaster (long)
2. big city
3. electric mainline (pure phase version, you could probably treat it and 'born never asked' as one track)
4. i believe it
5. all of my tears (pure phase version)
6. suicide
7. things'll never be the same (forged prescriptions version)
8. feel so good
9. how does it feel
10. let me down gently
11. smiles (was this on some volume magazine compilation?)
12. lord can you hear me (LICD version - possilby indefensible choice)
...and on and on. I am not as familiar with sonic's oevure as I should be.

I don't know if anyone linked this yet, but here's the Byron Coley Spin piece that first alerted a fair number of people (myself included) to Spacemen 3. I still remember being fascinated by their album covers, of all things. They just looked like they had to be an amazing band...

When Sound of Confusion showed up in the US as an import I bought the record solely based on the album cover.

Can't the next poll start anyway? Not sure why it'd have to wait for the final results of this one.

I'm quite enjoying the leisurely pace of the rollout.

Also, too low.

groovypanda, Friday, 13 March 2015 21:38 (nine years ago) link

just trying to please everybody - in the past people have complained about too many polls going on at once and missing stuff as a result etc.

I confess I am more irritated w the "Epics" poll taking up space than this one, altho this one is movin pretty slow

Οὖτις, Friday, 13 March 2015 21:46 (nine years ago) link

There's no reason for another poll not to go, as I've mentioned before.

I'm not sure why Jason never attempted any more multipart 13-minute epics after "Feel So Sad". You'd figure he would have at least given it a shot in the LICD era ("Won't Get To Heaven" isn't long enough and is the weak link on LICD). Even though it wouldn't have fit with the ambient whooshiness of LGM, it takes guts to leave something as good as "Feel So Sad" off your debut album.

"OD Catastophe" was my #3 and my highest ranking S3 song. The vocals in the third verse coming in raised one octave is some "Heroes"-level drama.

NoTimeBeforeTime, Sunday, 15 March 2015 00:05 (nine years ago) link

People like broken heart? Huh

Οὖτις, Sunday, 15 March 2015 00:47 (nine years ago) link

"Cop Shoot Cop" wasn't, enough of a 10+ minute epic?

Elvis Telecom, Sunday, 15 March 2015 00:58 (nine years ago) link

Broken Heart was my number one. Incredible song.

Kitchen Person, Sunday, 15 March 2015 01:17 (nine years ago) link

agreed.

Bee OK, Sunday, 15 March 2015 02:02 (nine years ago) link

lol didn't even know there was a 13-minute version of Feel So Sad. Had the 3 minute Recurring version in mind when I voted.

The line about being "too busy" really keeps Broken Heart from being excessively maudlin.

My number one. Listening to it headphones is like getting lost in a dark stadium full of audio illusions.

Elvis Telecom, Sunday, 15 March 2015 03:26 (nine years ago) link

Ha, I forgot about "Cop Shoot Cop", although it's structured very differently from "Feel So Sad". I guess I was thinking more along the lines of multi-part epic = e.g. "Don't Just Do Something" with a second coda and another eight verses, not a seven minute song padded with seven minutes of noise.

NoTimeBeforeTime, Sunday, 15 March 2015 07:12 (nine years ago) link

Just wondering, have the votes for songs that have both Spiritualized and Spacemen 3 versions been combined together?

As the 13 minute version of Feel So Sad is Spiritualized but the YouTube link above was for the S3 version so I assumed that was what people had voted for.

groovypanda, Sunday, 15 March 2015 07:41 (nine years ago) link

I was wondering about that too.

I hate to admit that I've never understood the love for "Recurring", except as a preview of the much better music they would make once S3 officially split up.

Yes.

Elvis Telecom, Sunday, 15 March 2015 18:39 (nine years ago) link

Only exception I made was separating "Sound Of Confusion" from "Walkin With Jesus" because it was an intentional separate vote.

Elvis Telecom, Sunday, 15 March 2015 18:42 (nine years ago) link

xpost

As the guy who voted "Recurring" #1, my love for it is due to my preference for bubblegum pop and R&B/gospel Spacemen 3 over the minimal Stooges thing. Recurring hits that spot the most (and really it was basically a three-way tie between Recurring, LGM and PP for me, just went with Recurring for sentimental reasons because it was the first album by S3 I bought and really listened to.)

I think Sonic's side is as good as anything he ever did, and while Jason's is weaker, it's still got Feel So Sad, Hypnotized, and Feeling Just Fine. Also really like what Carruthers and Refoy brought to the table on Sonic's side (bassline on I Love You, guitar on Why Couldn't I See).

The 13 minute Spiritualized version was my #1. Think it was their 3rd or 4th single in the year before LGM came out and I remember playing the 12" to death in halls at University. Still gets played often now
