i think i still have all my vhs tapes where i taped each episode. watched them so many times. i don't even know how i knew to tape it. i don't remember reading about it or anything. but i never missed a show. so inspiring. felt like it took forever for the DVDs to come out.

scott seward, Wednesday, 4 November 2015 18:27 (eight years ago) link

yeah I had VHS tapes from a friend, which we subsequently copied - this was around '97 or so (I didn't know anybody at the time who actually paid for HBO)

i really did do this. it was my only test to see if we were compatible.

When Scott and I first started hanging out, one of the first things he played me on his t.v. was his Mr. Show videos. I think he was really relieved when my sides were splitting and asked to see more. We might not be married today if I had hated it.

i never could have married ned raggett! sheesh, he really didn't like this show when i look upthread at ancient posts. smashing pumpkins fans are unpredictable though...

scott seward, Wednesday, 4 November 2015 18:32 (eight years ago) link

if I had to pick a single Mr. Show sketch to save in a fire it would def be "The Audition" which is just perfect from start to finish.

Οὖτις, Wednesday, 4 November 2015 18:34 (eight years ago) link

I was staying over at a friend's house in the mid-'90s and, having no idea what a Mr. Show was, we happened upon the Bob Lamonta sketch while flipping through channels. Probably still one of my hardest laughs of all time. And yes, once I was exposed, it really did feel like forever until those DVDs were released.

I have a similar story... I got cable in the mid-90s, stumbled across "It's Great. It's Crack. It Gets You Really High" and thought it was the greatest thing since vintage SCTV.

thumbs up to all of this.

I took old school fuzzy iron-on letters and made a tshirt, ca. 2000, that said "five inch taint." I wore it exactly once out in public and then felt ridiculous about it and tossed it.

andrew m., Friday, 6 November 2015 16:34 (eight years ago) link

They were really good at those deeply iterative bits that really pushed the boundary of how far they could take and repeat the same joke -- The Audition, Mt. Everest, Pre-Taped Call-In Show, shitting on the flag, etc. Each iteration brought something silly and new, so they could keep running with it.

watching david cross' stand up is like watching troy dyer sing "add it up," in a "fuck, am i that guy?" kind of way and i automatically sympathize with the michael grates point of view even though "add it up" what i think i'm all about

I think of this whenever Noel Gallagher says something stupid/funny:

Young People & Companions is an underrated sketch. Pretty sure I read/heard that Dino was tripping when he came up with the idea (and I think Pre-Taped Call-In Show was born of similar circumstances).

Puddin' Taint (Old Lunch), Thursday, 12 November 2015 18:41 (eight years ago) link

I love that sketch. Kinda helps if you grew up in SoCal, maybe? Because it seems like people were always getting lost in the woods and being described as "young people and companions."

Watched the first episode of the new show and was very pleased to find that it's basically just new episodes of Mr show, with the exact same format and supporting cast. Lots of laffs, although of course everyone has aged quite a lot.

The aging of John Ennis being the most notable (although I've seen him in other stuff from recent years). Dude looks like a stately old grandpa now.

Yeah, it's so much more over the top than it has any reason to be.
