It would be "too bad."

Go to English class.

Two words. Faith Hill.
That woman has lent her voice to some of the most unfortunate lyrics EVER. And I quote "It's not right, it's not fair, what you're missing over there" Also, anything that ends in "so", like "I miss him so" or I need her so". I am usually fairly lyric-tolerant, but these burn me.

The entirety of Art Bears' World As It Is Today. I finally bought it when I was in London for 14 pounds (ugh.) and can hardly listen to it. I haven't given up on it yet, but I am SORELY disappointed.

I should reiterate that it's only unlistenable because of the lyrics. The music is incredible.

Hate to pile on an easy target, but Interpol has to be considered for this awful line:

Subway, she is a porno

kornrulez6969 (TCBeing), Saturday, 20 August 2005 22:30 (eighteen years ago) link

Because it's a target that will get be beaten up in these parts:

Baby, can’t you see
I’m calling
A guy like you
Should wear a warning
It’s dangerous
I’m fallin’

There’s no escape
I can’t wait
I need a hit
Baby, give me it
You’re dangerous
I’m lovin’ it

Too high
Can’t come down
Losing my head
Spinning ‘round and ‘round
Do you feel me now

With a taste of your lips
I’m on a ride
You're toxic I'm slipping under
With a taste of a poison paradise
I’m addicted to you
Don’t you know that you’re toxic
And I love what you do
Don’t you know that you’re toxic

It’s getting late
To give you up
I took a sip
From my devil's cup
Slowly
It’s taking over me

Too high
Can’t come down
It’s in the air
And it’s all around
Can you feel me now

With a taste of your lips
I’m on a ride
You're toxic I'm slipping under
With a taste of a poison paradise
I’m addicted to you
Don’t you know that you’re toxic
And I love what you do
Don’t you know that you’re toxic

Don't you know that you're toxic

[x2]
With a taste of your lips
I'm on a ride
You're toxic I'm slipping under
With a taste of a poison paradise
I'm addicted to you
Don't you know that you're toxic

Intoxicate me now
With your lovin' now
I think I'm ready now
I think I'm ready now
Intoxicate me now
With your lovin' now
I think I'm ready now

nine years pass...

That badass G-Side song became less badass to me when I realized they were saying "ROLL TIDE". Such a shame, it's got a classic I'm about to fuck shit up" vibe like pac's "If I die tonight" or dire straits' "tunnel of love"

"Starry Eyes" has really terrible lyrics for such a great song.

Descendent's "I'm Not a Loser" ruined by the homophobic ending

Hammer Smashed Bagels, Wednesday, 21 January 2015 00:43 (nine years ago) link

WTF "Starry Eyes" has great lyrics! Bonus points for a title that implies it's a love song.

fan boy three (Lee626), Wednesday, 21 January 2015 08:32 (nine years ago) link

ziggy stardust
"jamming good with weird and gilly"
"screwed up eyes and screwed down hairdo like some cat from Japan"
"the kid was just crass, he was the nazz, with God given ass"
"making love with his ego"
NO

when is the new Jim O'Rourke album coming out (spazzmatazz), Wednesday, 21 January 2015 10:51 (nine years ago) link

Which "Starry Eyes"? The Records? Roky Erickson? Somebody else?

Just noise and screaming and no musical value at all. (Colonel Poo), Wednesday, 21 January 2015 11:11 (nine years ago) link

I much prefer the lyrics in Too Much Joy's version of Starry Eyes to the Records, but they're even more insidery, I think.

So many Descendents songs ruined by misogyny too. If those guys were getting started today, they'd be fedora'd up.

academy fight song

tarnished probably isn't even right, i just have no idea wtf he's talking about

Karl Malone, Sunday, 13 August 2017 03:18 (six years ago) link

however no one can deny that "I'm not judging you, I'm judging me" is an all-time great fist pumping lyric, buried in the midst of wtf

Karl Malone, Sunday, 13 August 2017 03:33 (six years ago) link

I'm reminded of the time in high school when we couldn't figure out the lyrics to any of the songs on The Jam's In The City. So we made up our own as best as we could.

Some years later we learned what the actual lyrics were and we liked ours more. Have been (unfairly?) harsh on Weller ever since.

song is just ok but i can't get past that adore/whore shit

I've been listening to the Doors recently, and there's, er, quite a few of these in their repertoire. That "Bullets strike the helmet's head" line in "The Unknown Soldier" is one that springs immediately to mind.

Another one by Luna, from 'Sideshow by the Seashore':

Then I painted your face/On a twenty dollar bill/But it isn't legal tender/And I think about you still

I think A Night In Tunisia might possibly be bad lyrics, but how come it lifts my spirits so much? Some aberration there that needs sorting out.

six years pass...

"Thinkin Bout You" by Frank Ocean: an all-time classic slow jam, which makes an unrequited crush sound like some kind of communion with the divine. The falsetto is other-worldly.
But every time i hear it, i wish he'd just left out the second verse:

No, I don't like you, I just thought you were cool enough to kick it
Got a beach house I could sell you in Idaho
Since you think I don't love you, I just thought you were cute
That's why I kissed you
Got a fighter jet, I don't get to fly it though, I'm lying down

Actually the first verse is pretty dodgy too. It was like an act of intentional self-sabotage.
