Just listened to this song for the first time and just had one of those moments where I had heard this song before... and indeed, I had. The synth line has been sampled by both Nujabes and To Rococo Rot, the latter shamelessly structuring a whole song around that one loop. Funny how these days you can hear a song for the first time, but still get that deja vu sense due to its use elsewhere. My favorite recent example is hearing Bernard Fevre's song Earth Message for the first time and realizing The Chemical Brothers song Got Glint not only samples it, but essentially covers it in the chorus.

new self-released album on Bandcamp:

Dear friends..

Recently I have been thinking about what 'a change' means. Whether it's a turning corner of keeping on walking straight down the road, or a ship adapting its course to the winds and waves, or a kite dancing in the air one step away from the clouds. I'm thinking about new passages, further destinations, new places to reach.. but I still have a bag full of memories: unique people I've met, smiles, hugs, projects.. Maybe a change is like crossing a bridge, following a kite that finds its meaning in the wind, its motive for searching the horizon and stealing another dream. This collection contains some songs that I've made in the past few years, written to talk about dreams and love while waiting for new colors and new music. It's like looking back at a garden of roses and flowers, hoping the next lawn is just as beautiful and bright.

some of this is really good but some of it sounds distractingly like the most dated parts of 90s trip-hop, the melodies and pad sounds are great and this is probably better than like 80% of anything I'll hear all year though

boxedjoy, Tuesday, 7 April 2020 08:08 (four years ago) link

Haha, definitely had the same thought re. dated '90s touchstones. There's a LOT of good stuff though.

He did a live thing the other day and I was surprised by how much it reminded of *something*... but I couldn't put my finger on what it was (Gottsching? Eno? Papa M? Fennesz?)

If you have time, listen to the first 7 minutes of this and please tell me what other artist/works it sounds like (RIYL?):

First seven minutes sounds particularly electric Windham Hill-y to me (Peter Maunu, Danny Heines come to mind). Also reminds me of that Jakob Bro guy on ECM. Not hearing any Eno or Ashra at all.

Paul Ponzi, Friday, 17 April 2020 15:48 (three years ago) link

Jersey Al (Albert R. Broccoli), Friday, 17 April 2020 15:51 (three years ago) link

If you don't know the two Gaussian Curve records that Gigi did with Jonny Nash and Young Marco, they definitely mine that soundworld, as does some of Jonny Nash's solo stuff (e.g. 'Exit Strategies' from 2015). Also try the album 'Surface' by Santilli that came out last year.

What type of music do you call this? Is it Balearic? And more recommendations in this style would be appreciated (I've checked out most of the names mentioned above)

calypso is the one i can't stop listening to lately. it's like every relaxing activity you can imagine - lying in a park and staring at clouds, people watching in a cafe, taking a train ride, watching the tide go out - combined and condensed into one album.

But his face would not turn into hot Kirby (Evan), Monday, 24 July 2023 03:41 (eight months ago) link

map have you heard that in full yet? It's gorgeous but with obviously more forward piano which makes it more conventional sounding than a typical Masin record, but still feels very much a part of his universe.

Also must say that Gaussian Curve's The Distance gives me the same romantic-mundane serenity spirit as you described regarding Calypso.

Probably not the right thread for it but post/thread on Twitter that would suggest, if true, that Greg Foat is a bit of an arsehole

Just Greg Foat losing his mind at me for posting on FB about my Louder Than War best albums inclusion and saying that it can be pretty challenging and thankless promoting records as an independent artist.

First he dropped a little public post about it, now he’s in my DMs. pic.twitter.com/zyUCQIfohb
