I'm coming to NY for four days at beginning of May w/my wife, staying near Murray Hill area (36th & 5th). Any recommendations for some good places to take a vegetarian diner? We've done Zen Palate before, and one of my friends wants to take us to Kefi. What else is good?

I don't know them, but there's gotta be some great veggie south-indian stuff not far from you.

You can also walk up to the 7 train and come out to Queens and visit Sripraphai, Little Pepper, Dehli Heights etc etc

Gobo is similar to Zen Palate (and better imo). probably a little pricier but they have a prix fixe if you eat early

I liked Kefi, it's good and pretty cheap

angelicas kitchen in the village was always great - havent eaten there in years tho

I seem to remember a decent vegetarian place in the 20s on maybe 9th Ave.? Not insanely far from your location.

soy is nice, just a little place. somewhere off rivington. bunch of little places around west fourth like temple in the village. i wonder whether you're better going with thai stuff in queens etc rather than exclusively vegetarian.

Thai is always good - thanks for the suggestions! Keep 'em coming!

yeah, i went to vatan with my mom a few years ago -- we're both vegetarian -- and it was good. not too expensive, tons of food.

hey, while i'm on this thread, has anyone been to or heard anything about trigo? a chowhound guy i know said he'd heard pretty good things. looking for dinner spot for visiting friends.

went to kefi last night--good greek food for affordable prices. not really worth the trip all the way up the UWS but if youre in the neighb its a good stop. excellent souvlaki. i had sheeps milk dumplings with spicy lamb sausage and pine nuts, it was excellent.

also "ouzo" which tastes terrible and is very strong

rip dom passantino 3/5/09 never forget (max), Wednesday, 1 April 2009 13:31 (fifteen years ago) link

<3 ouzo raki sambuca or whatever

i liked zuzu ramen too - it is maybe a little over priced for ramen - still not an expensive meal tho - good place to be overall

ice cr?m, Wednesday, 1 April 2009 14:15 (fifteen years ago) link

Ouza is hell disguised as paint thinner. Retsina, however, is pretty good once you get used to it.

guys i need to eliminate this business associate and im really nervous (Laurel), Wednesday, 1 April 2009 14:17 (fifteen years ago) link

I dunno. I don't get sticker shock too often but I was surprised the Zuzu Ramen bowl was 14 bucks. That's Momofuku prices .... this place is on 4th Ave in Brooklyn and the food wasn't that good. hot & sour shrimp was not hot or sour .... it was like an italian dish ... shrimps and noodles in red sauce with tomatoes

wish I liked the place, I was excited about it opening

dmr, Wednesday, 1 April 2009 18:49 (fifteen years ago) link

got the zuze ramen which was good if not amzing and this really nice japanese wheat beer - didnt try the hot n sour - they are def trying to do some sort of in between momofuku and traditional type thing - u can charge those prices when yr the only game in town - and i feel like thats a not uncommon occurrence w/foods that have more competition in manhattan - so i whole heartedly support the opening of more ramens in the greater downtown brooklyn area - especially menkui tei should def open a branch in ft greene - i totally recommend that

this would be a dream come true.

mizzell, Wednesday, 1 April 2009 19:32 (fifteen years ago) link

but yeah the price def makes it into an occasional place where if it was more like $8-9 a bowl id eat it all the time - judging on when i was there it doesnt look like theyll be hurting for customers tho

definite fantasy of mine xp

Super Taste on Eldridge, while justifiably known primarily for their excellent noodles, makes damn good dumplings.

i went to le grand dakar last week. it was friendly and nice, but a little fusiony? i've had more authentic senegalese on 116th, but maybe that's because i was with a wolof speaker? i am now curious whether yolele! recipes are authentic or not. dude has been winning mad awards for it.

tehresa, Friday, 3 April 2009 19:44 (fifteen years ago) link

Shanghai Cafe and Joe's Shanghai are the two classics, but I prefer the Caf for the surly punk-rock-haircut butch waitresses who bark at you. And for the seaweed soup.

you know who has good soup dumplings? M Shanghai in williamsburg. You get your punk-rock waiters there for real.

dan selzer, Tuesday, 7 April 2009 18:18 (fifteen years ago) link

m shanghai is totally good

any recommendations for casual, fairly cheap places for a big group w/ a wide range in ages? places like otto and kefi are good models for what im looking for...
