Really strange watching the first ep last night. Carlin actually bombed a couple of times ("Have you heard these jokes before?"), but it was weirdly refreshing to see two (!) musical guests within the first 30 minutes.

jacobreed in the fine tradition of beating a slender joke to unfunniness

well you wd've loved the TV Variety Show 1947-75, then

The other day I was driving around, and out of nowhere I wanted to remember the name of that guy who did that thing. Maybe five minutes later it popped into my head: A. WHITNEY BROWN! What happened to that guy?

Josh in Chicago, Sunday, 15 February 2015 21:24 (nine years ago) link

After he left SNL, he was one of the original correspondents on The Daily Show. He's kept a mostly low profile since then, though.

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 15 February 2015 22:22 (nine years ago) link

OMG they're doing a red carpet pre-special special for this 40th anniversary thing. That's sort of ridiculous.

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 15 February 2015 22:24 (nine years ago) link

In the new Rolling Stone (which has that cast ranking thing as the cover story) there's a side bar with a list of the 10 best episodes. The Michael Jordan/Public Enemy ep came in at #1. Had forgotten that one gave us Schmitt's Gay: http://www.ebaumsworld.com/video/watch/679770/ (lesser quality, but has the original music, which the 'official' online versions don't).

I dunno, if a red carpet ceremony is going to happen, I actually think it makes more sense to do it for the 40th anniversary of a show that changed the television landscape than for an annual back-patting awards show.

(Except, isn't it like 10 below in NYC right now?)

Montgomery Burns' Jazz (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Sunday, 15 February 2015 23:16 (nine years ago) link

sheesh what is the deal with Chevy Chase?

rip van wanko, Monday, 16 February 2015 00:54 (nine years ago) link

(it's easy to forget he's 71, God bless him, I like CC)

rip van wanko, Monday, 16 February 2015 00:57 (nine years ago) link

3.5 hrs is a long time

johnny crunch, Monday, 16 February 2015 01:00 (nine years ago) link

This is so bad.

jmm, Monday, 16 February 2015 02:31 (nine years ago) link

is sandler @ this thing

johnny crunch, Monday, 16 February 2015 02:32 (nine years ago) link

holy shit @ Chevy Chase. Did he eat 10 million bowls of Colon Blow?

guess that bundt gettin eaten (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 16 February 2015 02:35 (nine years ago) link

Was Betty White supposed to be doing the Californian accent? It didn't quite come across.

jmm, Monday, 16 February 2015 02:36 (nine years ago) link

In a way, it's the perfect retrospective: it's like a typically middling-to-awful SNL episode, but twice as long!

Montgomery Burns' Jazz (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Monday, 16 February 2015 02:36 (nine years ago) link

whats up with that

johnny crunch, Monday, 16 February 2015 02:49 (nine years ago) link

hey, randy newman is in the audience. (did he actually appear on the show? i missed the first 45 min.)

I dunno. (amateurist), Monday, 16 February 2015 03:07 (nine years ago) link

i'm having funny w/ this, but the A.D.D. montages are painful

I dunno. (amateurist), Monday, 16 February 2015 03:08 (nine years ago) link

I can't believe Jimmy Fallon has failed his way to the top, what a huge pile of mediocrity.

©Oz Quiz© (Adam Bruneau), Monday, 16 February 2015 03:12 (nine years ago) link

Newman hasn't been on stage (yet). I saw Spielberg & Capshaw in the audience as well.

you make me feel like danzig (WilliamC), Monday, 16 February 2015 03:14 (nine years ago) link

ok, muting it now

I dunno. (amateurist), Monday, 16 February 2015 03:17 (nine years ago) link

the Miley cover was pretty all right tbh

slothroprhymes, Monday, 16 February 2015 03:30 (nine years ago) link

Would rather hear her sing that than Simon, tbh.

Montgomery Burns' Jazz (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Monday, 16 February 2015 03:31 (nine years ago) link

This is the best way to watch SNL -- one episode every 30 years or so.

you make me feel like danzig (WilliamC), Monday, 16 February 2015 03:38 (nine years ago) link

Ha. Should I turn on?

Up the Junction Boulevard (James Redd and the Blecchs), Monday, 16 February 2015 03:39 (nine years ago) link

kanye getting like 8 mins of this to perform & do floor exercises shd prove hes goat imo

johnny crunch, Monday, 16 February 2015 03:49 (nine years ago) link

You'd think they'd have saved up some good material for this thing.

jmm, Monday, 16 February 2015 04:08 (nine years ago) link

How embarrassing. I was about to call them out for not remembering Terry Sweeney, but then I found out he's still alive.

Johnny Fever, Monday, 16 February 2015 04:11 (nine years ago) link

FInally visually confirmed that Valerie Dee Naranjo is indeed in the band.

Up the Junction Boulevard (James Redd and the Blecchs), Monday, 16 February 2015 04:27 (nine years ago) link

ok the jon lovitz thing was funny

I dunno. (amateurist), Monday, 16 February 2015 04:32 (nine years ago) link

Was he singled out for any particular reason?

Up the Junction Boulevard (James Redd and the Blecchs), Monday, 16 February 2015 04:36 (nine years ago) link

No reason other than picking on Jon Lovitz is funny.

I would've done this show completely differently...interview style, focus on the eras, the writers' room, get former cast members talking to each other about things and see what kind of conversations develop, and whatever. Not, I repeat NOT, try to recreate Celebrity Jeopardy and Wayne's World and Bass-O-Matic sketches with old people. And why McCartney? Kanye? Miley? Paul Simon? The fuck do I need to see music performances on this occasion for? Ugh. Anyway, it's finally over.

Johnny Fever, Monday, 16 February 2015 04:45 (nine years ago) link

Also, very worrying to me is that it seems like John Goodman could die any day now. Eeesh.

Johnny Fever, Monday, 16 February 2015 04:46 (nine years ago) link

chevy chase looked worse, frankly

I dunno. (amateurist), Monday, 16 February 2015 04:47 (nine years ago) link

yeah chase looked like he gained 40 additional pounds, but fuck him anyway

slothroprhymes, Monday, 16 February 2015 05:03 (nine years ago) link

I actually thought the celeb jeopardy standard bit was funny. Sean Connery et. al.

curmudgeon, Monday, 16 February 2015 05:16 (nine years ago) link

Glad to see Fallon and Sanz called out for breaking.

nickn, Monday, 16 February 2015 07:03 (nine years ago) link

this is like... shoah long

polyphonic, Monday, 16 February 2015 07:11 (nine years ago) link

FB comment: "Whenever Jimmy Fallon and Justin Timberlake perform it's like watching the jocks dress up as Devo at my high school talent show."

touch of a love-starved cobra (Dr Morbius), Monday, 16 February 2015 08:24 (nine years ago) link

shoah long, it's been good to know ya

touch of a love-starved cobra (Dr Morbius), Monday, 16 February 2015 08:25 (nine years ago) link

JF (and Morbs' fb commenter) otm.

Bill Murray's re-creation thing was the only one that worked.

Montgomery Burns' Jazz (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Monday, 16 February 2015 14:37 (nine years ago) link

i thought norm was funnier than ever. tbh i lol'd a bunch during this, and sure it was uneven at times but so is every SNL episode ever

Mordy, Monday, 16 February 2015 14:38 (nine years ago) link

Wasn't Eddie Murphy in this?

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 16 February 2015 14:51 (nine years ago) link

yep he just gave a "great to be here, enjoy the show"

rip van wanko, Monday, 16 February 2015 14:53 (nine years ago) link

murphy had what seemed like a ten-minute lead-up from chris rock, then came out for 60 seconds to thank the audience, then had a "live television moment"

i don't think murphy is anywhere near as loathed as chase but i do get the feeling that he's not exactly loved; his appearance had every hallmark of him and his agent stipulating that he had to be on stage effectively solo (save for a few seconds w/ rock), basking in applause and almost nothing else. god forbid they put murphy into a skit like the other peons.

I dunno. (amateurist), Monday, 16 February 2015 15:11 (nine years ago) link

Apparently even he has standards.

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 16 February 2015 15:25 (nine years ago) link

Not saying his appearance was remarkable, but I'm glad he didn't come out in a Gumby suit or Buckwheat wig like the other cast members reprising their greatest hits.

The Jon Lovitz RIP thing was great. It was just as funny when Dave did it though.

pplains, Monday, 16 February 2015 15:50 (nine years ago) link

Jeopardy and weekend update p much the only funny things. Murphy appearance was ridiculous.
