oops sorry it does sound like a reminiscence.

fond reminiscences delivered drunkenly I'm afraid, hence possibly the confusion. gratified at the response tho. feel there must be something minor coming up I can make a meal of to get books and well wishes and will post here with full details when that happens.

ooh, you bunch of arseoles, I'm sitting here drinking a glass of filthy wine laughing at ilx. I'm fine apart from the usual sketchiness.

and to get it back on track and cap it off I seem to have got mixed up with a v unannoying co-worker who also happens to be technically married.

as my brother said last week - bit of a backward step isn't it? getting pissed then drunk texting a married woman then sitting round all day eating cereal and watching cricket? I said not.

I once, as an experiment you understand, decided to a decent-sized glass of whisky - macallans ten almost certainly possibly highland park - when I got up. "what's it like I wonder" I said to myself.

after having it I was filled with an enormous creative and social energy. I got ready and went out filled with a thousand plans. when I got to central London I suddenly felt more tired than I had done in my life ever before. and quickly returned home. where I laid on the bed listening in a totally unengaged way to a South Africa - england test.

my new boss is a dick.

last fall was leading project where my direct report missed all of her deadlines but one, to the point where other people (including me had to finish her work). then she went on leave (for valid reasons) on the day training was supposed to start, which left me to fill in at the last minute (FOR AN ENTIRE MONTH).

finally gave up...said I can't do this anymore to the department lead, and went back to my old position. would rather do work than delegating it.

Hammer Smashed Bagels, Friday, 20 February 2015 02:29 (nine years ago) link

yeah, I've been managing a bunch of fairly junior employees this year and have spent an increasing amount of time holding hands and cleaning up messes. It is wearing very thin at this point. I've had similar thoughts of moving away from management and going in a more technical direction.

Free Me's Electric Trumpet (Moodles), Friday, 20 February 2015 02:47 (nine years ago) link

holding hands and cleaning up messes sums it up exactly. I have mucho respect for anybody who can do it and stay sane - some people are built for it, but not me. I was conned by the unusually smooth first year and a half in the position.

hopefully if you make that decision there's something better on the technical side waiting for you!

Hammer Smashed Bagels, Friday, 20 February 2015 02:54 (nine years ago) link

I often overhear the lass nearby me who is managing our recent move to an offshore call centre. Customers hate these things: they get staff with accents who are going off scripts and have minimal clue. And boy oh boy do these staff seem useless. Theyre Fijian, and despite many months of training and admonishment they still seem to be just as useless as when they started - tickets are barely readable english, customers complain about useless troubleshooting, poor english and rude tone on calls. I'd hate to be that manager - she's tried everything. Not a lot one can do remotely tho I guess.

(without meaning to stereotype, there's also a cultural problem because islander folk just dont take shit very seriously, life is pretty laid back - and that comes over very strongly in the lack of GAF of their work ethic)

Oh good, a poster I spent ages working on and that just needed one much-delayed name dropped in to a space I'd carefully left marked in order to be made complete was then mucked around with and "redesigned" by my boss when she was putting that name in on my day off. And now she's eating a big plate of peanut-buttered toast at her desk a metre away which is making my feeble anaphylactic throat and heart hurt.

people only bring crying babies to my office :(

bizarro gazzara, Wednesday, 25 February 2015 14:39 (nine years ago) link

We get both.

One manager brought her dog to her open office. Went to an afternoon meeting. Mutt whimpered for two hours straight.

pplains, Wednesday, 25 February 2015 14:44 (nine years ago) link

I love office dogs and office babies/kids, but totally totally understand why people wouldn't.

Not cool to have to put up with peanut butter in your area when you're allergic, though.

Ha.

On the allergy tip once my office decided to have the stupidest theme day ever: "wear tons of perfume/cologne", with prizes for guessing the smells, most obnoxious scent etc. I am not even joking. I think I privately emailed my boss and said "are you kidding? I'll end up with a migraine, i am kind of allergic to strong perfumes" and they called it off and kind of made it clear I was the spoilsport which was embarrassing :(

I checked Snoops , and it is for real (Trayce), Wednesday, 25 February 2015 23:25 (nine years ago) link

that sounds like my worst nightmare jfc what a horrible idea

difficult-difficult lemon-difficult (VegemiteGrrl), Wednesday, 25 February 2015 23:35 (nine years ago) link

That's insane. My former workplace office (current employer but I work from home bitchez) had signs up asking everyone not to wear strong perfume.

On the 'stupid, annoying coworkers' tip, I can't believe I have never mentioned this guy here, but I once had a 'manager' who was the sales-iest, cheesiest doofus ever whose 'thing' was guessing women's perfumes to impress them. I remember on his first day he did it to one of the cool office ladies who had a lot of political power in that company, and he kind of did it subtly in conversation and she thought it was cool, and it came off okay. Then he tried to do it with every single other woman he met in the office. It was such an obvious, lame 'trick' and I hated him instantly.

We have a suggestion box on our company intranet where we are given the option to submit comments signed, or anonymously. This is the fun that you get to have when you attempt to submit anonymously.

I love loaded choices - 'we let you keep the freedom of anonymity but here's why it's horrible and nobody should do it'

Hammer Smashed Bagels, Monday, 2 March 2015 18:41 (nine years ago) link

my company briefly had an employee's corner board that served a similar purpose but we weren't given the option of anonymity. So of course when we posted we had to use restraint (and no doubt many didn't because of the non-anonymity factor), and a few times I got a 'talking to' because of something innocuous I posted as I 'didn't go through proper channels'.

the other thing that pissed me off recently is the company survey. for years, I had responded positively in the survey, as my dept is one of the few that is still run well, so I've been pretty chipper for 4 years. This last year was not so rosy (for outside reasons), so I responded honestly about why I wasn't enjoying my job lately . At the end, they gave us follow-up questions based on our responses and the first thing was about my lack of engagement and they asked 'are you aware of how your lack of engagement is affecting other employees'.

Basically wrote a long screed (as it was thankfully anonymous) saying how lame it is to suggest we're to blame for our own misery, as if it is outside of the realm of possibility that the company could be contributing to it.

Hammer Smashed Bagels, Monday, 2 March 2015 18:45 (nine years ago) link

That series of suggestion box responses is just freaking bizarre.

from batman to balloon dog (carl agatha), Monday, 2 March 2015 18:58 (nine years ago) link

surprised there wasn't another box that said "we respect your request to remain anonymous. In this instance, we have respectfully declined and have traced your machine via IP. We will take your suggestion under consideration, and will schedule a follow-up meeting to determine why you didn't want to share your name."

Hammer Smashed Bagels, Monday, 2 March 2015 18:59 (nine years ago) link

last box is just "Sorry, ___name___, but we have to let you go."
