Also their choppers are fucking insane with those moon blades -- I'm amazed fingers don't wind up in the salad with the speed at which they operate.

walid foster dulles (man alive), Wednesday, 11 February 2015 17:16 (nine years ago) link

ok i assumed it was like chipotle for salads or something

adam, Wednesday, 11 February 2015 17:31 (nine years ago) link

ugh chopped up salad is the worst

iatee, Wednesday, 11 February 2015 17:35 (nine years ago) link

It's sort of Chipotle-like -- they have a very large menu of pre-determined salads and a lot of different dressings but you can also make your own or take one of their planned salads and substitute things. Honestly it's good, I just wish it was like 20% cheaper.

walid foster dulles (man alive), Wednesday, 11 February 2015 17:37 (nine years ago) link

Make your own = tell them the ingredients you want, like in a chipotle. Similar assembly line sort of concept.

walid foster dulles (man alive), Wednesday, 11 February 2015 17:38 (nine years ago) link

yeah their salads are fine as long as you stop them from transforming them into a gruel-like consistency

iatee, Wednesday, 11 February 2015 17:41 (nine years ago) link

num pang is also good btw if kinda pricey.

yall almost had me til assembly line gruel salads

adam, Wednesday, 11 February 2015 18:22 (nine years ago) link

Yeah once in a while I go to the Num Pang near Grand Central for lunch.

walid foster dulles (man alive), Wednesday, 11 February 2015 19:21 (nine years ago) link

I do not like potbelly at all.

walid foster dulles (man alive), Wednesday, 11 February 2015 19:22 (nine years ago) link

Rise of Potbelly is weird but if they are keeping out Jimmy John's I will go to a Potbelly's every week

, Wednesday, 11 February 2015 19:56 (nine years ago) link

protip potbellys generally have clean unsecured bathrooms

adam, Wednesday, 11 February 2015 21:11 (nine years ago) link

Potbelly is foul. I wonder why somebody doesn't invent a good-tasting fast casual sub shop? Potbelly, Jimmy John's, Subway, Quizno all roughly equally dispiriting in my experience.

that being said, i would happily trek out to flushing to new restoran malaysia any damn time. a similar enormous menu to skyway, my main point of malaysian reference (ie i am not an expert). a couple different rojaks, a savory fruit salad that is apparently a common street food. we got one with many sour things and a tamarind/shrimp paste sauce. i liked it but i am not self-aware enough to know if it was for orientalist novelty reasons or true gastronomic affection. giant plate of chicken gizzards, livers and hearts with an excellent sweet/hot dipping sauce for $5--maybe one of the most unattractive plates i have ever seen, just a mound of gray offal, the livers were delicious in particular. good roti canai. also, most importantly, maybe the best beef rendang i have ever had. i guess rendang is cross-cultural and primarily associated with indonesian cuisine but this topped renditions from dedicated indonesian places that i've been.

two really amazing meals recently: dinner at carmellini's new nuamerican spot little park, and brunch at estela. recommend both wholeheartedly

max, Sunday, 19 April 2015 13:17 (nine years ago) link

dayo i am glad you liked that place! since i foolishly sold my car my queens eating trips have been curtailed but i am hoping nice weather will inspire me to travel more.

had a bad dinner at briefly hyped tuome. overpriced but decent carolina pulled pork at arrogant swine.

my most enjoyable recent meal was at east village og john's, carafe of cheap wine and a plate of eggplant parm the size of a rugby ball. this was after walking by javelina, the gussied up tex mex place on 18th, and being horrified by the decor (90s santa fe pier one chic) and the crowd (happy hour creatives). maybe the food there is legit but i'm not braving that scene.

adam I'll teach you to take the Chinatown van

, Sunday, 19 April 2015 22:32 (nine years ago) link

yes please.

oh i also went to royal seafood on mott st and had a kinda boring meal. the most interesting thing by far was a dish of lotus root in "tofu sauce." i don't know if this is a common cantonese thing but it was delicious and i would like to find other examples in perhaps better restaurants.

So the Chinese have built a better burger, eh? Americans are likely to be quite skeptical about this Tiananmen takedown of our dietary staple.

good veggie burger is better than all but the tip top best real burgers. a bad veggie burger is no worse than a bad real burger. superiority pictures look good but i have been burned by hot young things in this city too many times, might wait til the lines die down

i wanna try some of the russian restaurants in deep Brooklyn like avenue u Bensonhurst graves end

, Friday, 3 July 2015 13:57 (eight years ago) link

I passed by a sushi restaurant that was 100% kosher and under the strict supervision of a rabbi last time I was there

, Friday, 3 July 2015 13:58 (eight years ago) link

i've been to a (good) georgian restaurant in gravesend but i find it hard to resist l&b spumoni gardens if i am in that neighborhood. the russian joint sietsema wrote about this week sounded great tho.

have you been to the uighur place in brighton beach, cafe kashkar? i've only had takeout from there but it was excellent

adam, Friday, 3 July 2015 14:06 (eight years ago) link

No but I think in orbit has been

need to explore south Brooklyn more

, Friday, 3 July 2015 14:14 (eight years ago) link

i will go anywhere that has pickled oily fish on the menu tbh

, Friday, 3 July 2015 14:16 (eight years ago) link

Everyone and I mean everyone raves about Spumoni Gardens. I'm gonna have to go to see what the fuss is all about even though I can't eat probably anything! Also I biked past a large fresh pasta place on New Utrecht Ave yesterday that looked intrsting.

It was actually chinavision's other half that sent me to Kashkar! Was good, a bit more Central Asian cuisiney than the other place I like on Brighton Beach 2nd with the giant golden bowl on the awning.

Uhhhh Varenichnaya

Orson Wellies (in orbit), Friday, 3 July 2015 14:43 (eight years ago) link

When I had a Russian model roommate for a minute last summer she brought some oily fish home one night and shared it, with tasteless pasty boiled potatoes and some pickles (which admittedly were great). I thought I liked fishy fish but uh no it was awful.

Orson Wellies (in orbit), Friday, 3 July 2015 14:46 (eight years ago) link

Lol

i'd better buy some creamed herring in a jar before i fully commit

, Friday, 3 July 2015 14:49 (eight years ago) link

Kashkar doesn't serve alcohol btw tho they let us BYOB.

Orson Wellies (in orbit), Friday, 3 July 2015 15:05 (eight years ago) link

spumoni gardens is that crazy throwback pre-foodie place that people think of when they say "red sauce" Italian. easy to build up into some kinda elysian fields ideal when it's just good kinda greasy pizza and ices. summer in the city yall. we sat inside the "formal" dining room once on a super-humid day and had pasta - wish i could make sauce like that. after the waiter took our orders and walked away, my son (a native new yorker albeit manhattan) looked at me wide eyed and said quietly "is he faking that accent?" and I laughed and said no! like i said, old-school brooklyn.

M. Wells steakhouse recently for my birthday, actually second trip. I love it overall, but weirdly the steak we got was the least exciting thing - NY Strip, which they char on the outside no matter how you ask for it done and oversalt. Best things were actually the fresh oysters, which had some kind of an apple-chive topping, and the trout, which comes fresh from their tank and is served whole.

Generally really love what they do, both at the Steakhouse and at the little joint at PS1.

article is dumb too, basically sounds like any restaurant that isn't brand new/cutting-edge falls into the author's definition. E.g. in my old neighborhood he includes both a cheap Polish diner and a good but standard-issue French bistro.
