Saw a preview for an older Nic Cage movie the other night (i.e. he has "new wave haircut") - called Birdy, that seemed like he had a retarded friend and they both got sent to Vietnam and end up traumatized. Anybody seen it?

xp: Shakey - I think the preview showed a scene w/Nic Cage with a bandaged head. Why do bandaged heads make me laugh?

^^ I am laughing at this. I would laugh more if it was animated and did a stupid dance.

I love the remake because it took all of the subtle commentary on religious fanatacism and the paradox between Christian faith and Pagan heritage from the original film and replaced it with bees. And I like how, instead of in the original where he sings hymns and prays for his soul while he's burning (which drove hom the movie's two central themes), he just screams unintelligebly.

seriously, knowing might be funnier than wickerman -- wickerman's last half hour is really, really top notch "holy crap did i just watch that?" insanity, but the lolz are spread out more evenly in knowing. "THIS. IS. NOT. A. CRANK. PHONE. CALL!! JUST TELL THE FBI!"

Actually saw this one in the theater:

I tried & failed to find YT clips to post of my two favorite Nic Cage moments: (1) The scene toward the end of Vampire's Kiss when he's stumbling down Wall St. in broad daylight trying to convince various pedestrians to drive a wooden stake through his heart; & (2) in Wild at Heart when he & L. Dern are at the speed-metal concert & they throw the mike out to him & break into that Elvis song & all the teenage girls start screaming.

I've really gotta see The Wicker Man in its entirety.

Saw the last part of this the other night too. More shots of multiple Nicolas Cages walking around together than there were in Adaptation.

It wasn't until yesterday that I realized the new Nicolas Cage movie is about him busting out of Hell to save a baby. They really need to advertise these things better.

it's solid. i'd say it's pretty much exactly what you'd expect from the ads, but at the same time doesn't deliver on the premise to the extent that it could've. Cage is pretty subdued in it, but Heard is surprisingly credible in a tricky role. the main heavy sucks, but Fichtner owns. david morse cameo. needs to be seen in 3d.

yeah, that had classic written all over it. after 'gone in 60 seconds' we were all looking forward to a dominic sena-nic cage reteam.

well, i was. gone in 60 seconds is rad

hey, the premise had a lot of potential, it just couldn't deliver. drive angry otoh is exactly what the trailer promises.

I can discuss drams all day

genuinely curious if this movie is any good or not because it looks really interesting and most of his "normal guy" roles wind up getting really weird at some point

frogbs, Monday, 4 December 2023 16:09 (four months ago) link

I enjoyed it. He's still being "weird Cage" but it's a different take on it, and the story's fun while being a well-nuanced take on the phenomenon of memes/unwitting celebrity/"cancel culture" etc

...eh you get the gist of it (dog latin), Monday, 4 December 2023 17:39 (four months ago) link

The other day I put Renfield on in the background and sorta half-watched it, and that was pretty enjoyable -- like if the Deadpool movies made peace with the fact that some part of the audience is gonna think "This is so stupid" and didn't try to convince them that actually I am a very intelligent movie tyvm

Not sure how essential Nic Cage's presence was, but he did get me to watch a movie I otherwise would have ignored.

The king of the demo (bernard snowy), Wednesday, 6 December 2023 15:40 (four months ago) link

Renfield felt like it was trying to split the difference between being an action-comedy, a horror-comedy, and an action-horror, and had to sacrifice 30% of the power of each to get there. Didn't go hard enough for me, I guess. I do agree that it was good that they didn't try to make it "intelligent". Both Nicolas Cage and Nicholas Hoult were solid. A few decent laughs. I don't regret watching it, but I don't think I will again.
