lol dont you have enough to be getting on with for now

anima corrective (nakhchivan), Wednesday, 4 February 2015 02:24 (nine years ago) link

if only he had just put up 400 tracks all at once without soundcloud's horrible UI

brimstead, Wednesday, 4 February 2015 02:28 (nine years ago) link

this is all so generous that he probably feels the need to introduce a little bit of inconvenience

anima corrective (nakhchivan), Wednesday, 4 February 2015 02:31 (nine years ago) link

*cough* firefox plugin

― brimstead, Tuesday, February 3, 2015 6:23 PM (5 minutes ago)

yeah, but i'm greedy/compulsive, want 320s

Considering his numerous statements involving the word "hundreds", I won't be surprised in the least if it continues on for a few more weeks. Stoked!

octobeard, Wednesday, 4 February 2015 03:11 (nine years ago) link

looking at his comments it feels a bit haphazard/unplanned? only adds to the joy imo

140 on Soundcloud now. All downloadable apart from most the recent two (14 Floating∞ and hilo) which I assume he'll enable at some point.

groovypanda, Wednesday, 4 February 2015 08:39 (nine years ago) link

Actually hilo has d/l link. It's the latest three that don't have

groovypanda, Wednesday, 4 February 2015 08:41 (nine years ago) link

He's also had a track blocked by the notorious Soundcloud police:

Our automatic content protection system has detected that your sound "FmsubBass" may contain the following copyright content: "Absence" by Riva Starr, owned by George V Records. As a result, its publication on your profile has been blocked.

no it doesn't!

groovypanda, Wednesday, 4 February 2015 08:43 (nine years ago) link

the most immediately interesting tracks here are i would assume from 95ish and recall the discussion upthread about the software music explosion and the period immediately prior to it

Where is this in the run? I've listened to the first sixteen or so now (presumably SAW1 and Digeridoo-era) and it's all nice but with one or two glaring exceptions I've not heard much that was screaming to be released.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 4 February 2015 09:47 (nine years ago) link

150

groovypanda, Wednesday, 4 February 2015 13:02 (nine years ago) link

so, the two he took down, what were they? red calx? girl / boy dark?

the original 110 match exactly the 12 tapes in the google document that someone posted. but what are these others?

koogs, Wednesday, 4 February 2015 13:25 (nine years ago) link

this document : http://pastebin.com/5f38ynfm

koogs, Wednesday, 4 February 2015 13:31 (nine years ago) link

do we know where that doc came from? Was it RDJ or just some fan?

Jennifer 8.-( (Stevie D(eux)), Wednesday, 4 February 2015 13:35 (nine years ago) link

by a fan on watmm. not entirely sure how they worked out the tape splits, but it looks like they've decided that whenever RDJ takes a long break between uploading tracks, that's a new tape.

someone upthread said that a friend had actual physical tapes from aphex twin and that the names matched those. so perhaps they exist as physical tapes. (one of the ones i heard this morning sounded like the tape had been mangled somewhere along the way)

koogs, Wednesday, 4 February 2015 14:12 (nine years ago) link

"I'm facebook friends with Manny from Citinite/Optigram and when these soundcloud posts started showing up, he posted some cassette J-cards Richard made for him in 1990 with a lot of the same track names.

with one or two glaring exceptions I've not heard much that was screaming to be released.

At the same time, had any of this been released, I don't think we'd have complained.

Now I know how it must feel to be RDJ, looking at these hours and hours of tracks and thinking, huh, wtf do I do with all of this stuff? I'm not sure I even want to download the new things, having finally organized that last epic burst. I might just wait for the dust to settle first. Assuming it ever does.

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 4 February 2015 14:21 (nine years ago) link

Really nice live version of Heliosphan (with added acid) uploaded this morning.

groovypanda, Wednesday, 4 February 2015 14:23 (nine years ago) link

interesting tidbit i found when looking at some of the files, many of them are encoded by "SoundJam v2.5.3" which is the iTunes precursor from 2001

diamonddave85 (diamonddave85), Wednesday, 4 February 2015 16:27 (nine years ago) link

The only thing better than uploading all these would be if someone organized and annotated all of them, I have no idea where to start.

ed.b, Wednesday, 4 February 2015 16:41 (nine years ago) link

oh, i'm sure someone will be on it, once (if?) the onslaught ends.

♪♫_\o/_♫♪ (Karl Malone), Wednesday, 4 February 2015 16:51 (nine years ago) link

yes someone please c&p that every day here, it's not like he doesn't have a million ardent internet fans who are waiting to do that

anima corrective (nakhchivan), Wednesday, 4 February 2015 16:55 (nine years ago) link

yeah I'm gonna stop being that guy, I'm sure someone will do something more or less definitive, hopefully broken up into album-sized chunks - this is just way too much to hear at once

Abstinence Hawk (frogbs), Wednesday, 4 February 2015 17:04 (nine years ago) link

by the way I'd lose my mind if Underworld did something like this. their archives have got to be huge!

Abstinence Hawk (frogbs), Wednesday, 4 February 2015 17:11 (nine years ago) link

i've added tags to sort them into the 12 original tapes and will add tracks numbers within those tapes (and probably rename them to match). but don't know what to do with the 40 new tracks. that said, i can't be bothered updating them all to the 320k versions.

nobody answered my question about the two taken down tracks 8(

koogs, Wednesday, 4 February 2015 17:25 (nine years ago) link

red calx and girl/boy (dark) were taken down, also one called "fmsubbass" got caught in soundcloud's content filter yesterday

diamonddave85 (diamonddave85), Wednesday, 4 February 2015 17:27 (nine years ago) link

thanks

seems to me, starting around the 50s (in terms of upload order), tempos slow down and drums start to get that crunchy ICBYD sound. first batch of 112 sounds pretty chronological, but the stuff he uploaded yesterday sounds mostly like more 85-92 stuff, so idk.

brimstead, Wednesday, 4 February 2015 22:58 (nine years ago) link

yeah this is just randomly playing soundcloud tracks so i can't remember which ones but there's a few tracks like that, i have only played a fraction of this and i will wait until it's all uploaded and sorted

i haven't heard any tracks that sound like hangable auto bulb onwards in that hyperactive breaky style

there's a couple of track titles referring to clissold eg Last Clissold Maybe that sound a bit like icbyd era and in the noyzelab interview he refers to

rich: particular period around 94, made in 36 clissold crescent north london, dont think you ever lived there? im sure u went there though?
a lot of mates/mates of mates lived there
memory is a bit hazy/smodged of that decade !-)
I made ICBYD, RDJ, half of SAW2 etc etc there, amazing good times.

anima corrective (nakhchivan), Thursday, 5 February 2015 01:04 (nine years ago) link

Finally listening to that somadril account's tracks for the hell of it -- roffling that the second oldest song is a cover of the Smashing Pumpkins' "Quiet," all electrofunked up.

He's progressing down his catalog pretty nicely. Today's and yesterday's stuff sounds like it could have been written close to even Druckqs.

potential HAB b-side:

potential RDJ b-side:
https://soundcloud.com/user48736353001/28-organ
https://soundcloud.com/user48736353001/26-5a/

some appear to be Come to Daddy b-sides and possibly later. Vast majority of what's up is still pre-93 though.

octobeard, Thursday, 5 February 2015 07:49 (nine years ago) link

I've not been paying attention enough/lost track of this... Where can I get an up-to-date list of tracks to download? Is it possible to do it in one go rather than individually?

rem remrum (dog latin), Thursday, 5 February 2015 10:01 (nine years ago) link

hehe, reading upthread it looks like that's a very naive question... i'll wait a while.

rem remrum (dog latin), Thursday, 5 February 2015 10:03 (nine years ago) link

there is an ALL set that he created which has the mass of the tracks (the first 110) if that helps

Wow, I had no idea all of this happened. Assumed there was talk about the new EP, but not this huge hard drive dump. Really want to dig in once the deluge has slowed.

It hasn't. He put up four more a couple of hours earlier:

I think if the Frank Zappa who spent the last few years of his life fucking around with a Synclavier (and not getting much traction on the learning curve, imo) had lived long enough to hear what RDJ was going to start putting down, he would have made a pilgrimage to England and said "teach me, maestro." Mainly in terms of timbral possibilities, not as a composer.
