Well I'm wrapping up a listen to an advance of the new one, Sauna, right now, and my attitude is: it just became my favorite release of the year so far. I have always irregularly enjoyed Phil Elverum's work as I've heard it but I would never pretend to be an in-depth fan, so how much this draws on or perhaps only reworks more recent times I can't say. But heard it in its own right, this second, Sauna's hitting a ridiculously good sweet spot touching on understated indie rock rumination, huge drone washes and flow, moments of sudden beauty where you can hear both the performance and the production intersect in striking ways and much more. It feels like a culmination of an approach that I almost thought didn't exist much any more, and it may be comparable in its small c-catholicism and embracing feeling only to Liz Harris in terms of emotional resonance. Nothing about it per se is 'new' but everything about it connects and reaches to a higher level. A striking, wonderful listen tonight that I might have needed more than I realized.

OK I'm much more interested in hearing this now than I already was, and I loved both Clear Moon and Ocean Roar (latter was a bit overlooked). Thanks for this.

three years pass...
A bird crapped on my left shoulder on the way to work this morning and it occurred to me that a better and more relatable title for Elverum's album would have been A Crow Pooped On Me
