i was holding out to level higher first

From what I understand that's the wrong way to do it, you'll end up working to upgrade gear which will then be superseded by expansion-only equipment, which you'll need to upgrade all over again. So if you're going to play the expansion (which I'm not) then I get the impression it's best to jump on it sooner rather than later.

JimD, Tuesday, 3 February 2015 10:26 (nine years ago) link

i think that only applies to exotics which i don't have yet (the dlc resets any exotic upgrades to the new upgrade system(?!?)). from the start you're upgrading things that will soon be garbage anyway. also the expansion can't even be touched until you're 24 or higher. i grabbed it last night as i'm nearing 28 ;]

I didn't get the dlc but did get the new exotics system. I think it was just part of a recent update.

What system are you playing on, amon? I should probably at least take a stab at the vault of glass sometime but I have refused to do any work on finding a guild for some reason.

I used all my old upgraded weapons on my second playthrough :[

polyphonic, Tuesday, 3 February 2015 19:20 (nine years ago) link

ps4. i was going to start another class and keep old stuff to transfer but always ended up discarding everything cuz the inventory gets full quick. i accidentally tried vault of glass w/ a 2 people last night and we got nowhere

i'm not sure if i'll ever play this game but it's one of the best thread titles on ILX

two weeks pass...

Played some of this at my friends' yesterday, and it was really fun! Looked amazing too, it's crazy something looks like this good hardware almost 10 years old.

all of you are probably wondering, how's that awesome new destiny dlc? well it added several new story missions. cool, new stuff to look at, right?!?!... no they take place in the same areas as the other story missions you've run through thousands of times but, this time you run through them backwards! moral: don't buy this shitty game.

😂 (am0n), Wednesday, 27 May 2015 15:32 (eight years ago) link

lol. i am tempted often to get this, as it's been dropping to around $20 for the base game. better off to wait for the inevitable GOTY?

Nhex, Wednesday, 27 May 2015 16:13 (eight years ago) link

the new modes are at least a departure from before and they've removed some of the grindy gear leveling aspects (no more ascendant mats required to get your gear to max) which i think is a step in the right dir. also been having trouble deciding if the game is any fun lately so it's a mixed bag

head clowning instructor (art), Wednesday, 27 May 2015 16:45 (eight years ago) link

new modes also don't do matchmaking afaik so the game kinda requires you to have 2+ friends who also play / rely on the lfg websites

head clowning instructor (art), Wednesday, 27 May 2015 16:46 (eight years ago) link

also first dlc seems now to have been a waste of $20 once the second one was released, not sure you need it for any endgame purpose

head clowning instructor (art), Wednesday, 27 May 2015 16:50 (eight years ago) link

the base level team of 3 vs hordes mode has matchmaking and was kinda fun but a random "teammate" (read: massive prick) rushed in at the end to get the loot which started a timer making me miss out. bungie giveth, bungie puncheth ur balls

😂 (am0n), Wednesday, 27 May 2015 19:44 (eight years ago) link

ugh. maybe i'll stick to single player Borderlands

Nhex, Wednesday, 27 May 2015 19:46 (eight years ago) link

But also you can't play four-player co-op in this game except for raids, and raids are six player. So you have to have three players or six players. It's sort of maddening.

so the big big update is out in a month - just in time for me to have bought a PS4 and to buy this as a package containing the game and all the expansions for £40. thanks for beta testing this everyone xxxx

anyone getting into the taken king? the 2.0 update made some very solid changes (weapon rebalancing, expanded bounty slots and the ability to turn in bounties anywhere, consolidation of upgrade materials, etc.) and the new content in dlc 3 sounds pretty solid from what i've read so far today.

i'm still pretty much hopelessly stuck on this game, but still can't be certain i'd recommend it to a stranger (i've pushed it on friends but that's mostly so i have others to run content with). raids are still tons of fun (imo) and 2.0 revitalized pvp to an extent but until i get a chance to delve deeper i can't say for sure it's worth the scratch.

all my friends are vampires (art), Tuesday, 15 September 2015 19:07 (eight years ago) link

I kind of loved the demo and do plan to pick this up when I've set aside enough $ for a PS4 (it's finally hit the point where it's worth it for me), but that's going to be December at the absolute earliest. I do kind of worry about community for this kind of multiplayer-based game- didn't it have a really perceptible dropoff in player base for a while?

You guys are caterpillar (Telephone thing), Wednesday, 16 September 2015 00:40 (eight years ago) link

not to mention... there are going to be more expansion packs, aren't there? hence the lack of "complete edition" moniker on the new SKU.

Nhex, Wednesday, 16 September 2015 14:16 (eight years ago) link

I just got this for PS4. Anyone starting recently that want to co-op?

Mordy, Wednesday, 16 September 2015 14:21 (eight years ago) link

same actually! might want to once i get to those big raids... if you're UK based my username is jamiesummerz

Yeah I bought TTK in the end, it's very generous in its "Go new places! Do new things! Have this cool stuff for free!" first hour or two, though the instant obsolescence of ALL year one stuff (including exotics, which are now outclassed by second tier year 2 equipment) definitely stings. I hadn't even finished levelling my gjallerhorn.

I'm up for raiding in theory, feel free to add me (jimodo).

JimD, Wednesday, 16 September 2015 15:33 (eight years ago) link

its pretty good so far. i think old outclassed stuff can be infused for higher stats but i don't totally understand how it works

a couple hrs into TTK now, and i haven't yet been able to bring myself to destroy all my year one legendaries yet (hopscotch pilgrim, i barely knew ye) even though i'm currently wearing almost all blue/green drops that significantly outclass the old stuff.

i'm enjoying the new story, and am psyched to try out heroic strikes, nightfall, and the new raid *hopefully* within the next week or so.

for new folks - i recommend against d3st1nylfg unless it's absolutely necessary (i have had several really negative experiences with randoms picked up for groups from there) but strongly suggest you check out the 100. the ability to schedule when you want to run a task is definitely nice for folks with jobs and lives outside of destiny, and i've found the caliber of person who populates this site is GENERALLY higher than the alternatives. multiplayer is really the key to this game, so finding a group to roll with is invaluable.

also, feel free to add me should you so desire. i'm at psn: vrilr0. i am primarily concerned w/ getting into the new endgame content but i love the old raids and PoE etc. as well

all my friends are vampires (art), Wednesday, 16 September 2015 17:40 (eight years ago) link

feel like I'm probably too low to help you (27? 28? i think?) but I am curious about the new content. I've still never done a raid.

polyphonic, Wednesday, 16 September 2015 18:41 (eight years ago) link

never seen that the100 thing b4, interesting

am0n, Wednesday, 16 September 2015 19:28 (eight years ago) link

never done vog and when i did scrota's end i pretty much took a backseat as the others cheesed thru it for their 200th time. that was "fun"

am0n, Wednesday, 16 September 2015 19:31 (eight years ago) link

only done crota once (need to do it a few more times on HM to upgrade my husk of the pit) but vog is my jam. i suck at it but the mechanics for the final boss are really cool and anxiety inducing.

bungie hid a few dead ghosts in crota's end so it seems like that raid might have a place in y2 but i'm not sure about vog and this makes me sad since i think it's the best thing they've done in this game so far

i think the target is roughly 240 light to hit at least start hitting the endgame targets (possibly more for some things) but i am guessing some of the older stuff, like poe and y1 raids, might have lower threshholds.

in the earlier days, people started hitting vog at 27 or 28, i wonder what, if anything, they've done to normalize the new system with that old expectation.

all my friends are vampires (art), Wednesday, 16 September 2015 19:44 (eight years ago) link

so any idea why i can't pick up any more vanguard bounties even though i'm only holding 5?

also just made 40, hit me up PSN name is BLIFIL

adam, Monday, 28 September 2015 16:02 (eight years ago) link

i tried the new raid on saturday. took 2-3 hours to make it to the first boss and ultimately had to abandon the fireteam to rejoin the world. i think the group i was with was maybe under-geared or possibly unfamiliar with raid dynamics because we kept dying during seemingly straightforward procedural steps. (also the platforming stage took at least half an hour to get everybody across.)

i probably won't return to it before i lose my checkpoint tonight at 2am, but am interested to see more of the raid and get some of that more of that sweet sweet gear. i did make it out with a 303 light ghost shell which was awesome, and a full 20 point improvement over the one i went in with.

psn: vrilr0, feel free to add me for whatever

all my friends are vampires (art), Monday, 28 September 2015 16:22 (eight years ago) link

also for the newly 40 folks, make sure you run the dreadnought patrol mission so you can get access to the 36 & heroic strike playlists. these are your bread and butter for raising your light level. after 3-5 1-2 hr sessions you should be at or near 290 which i think is basically the bottom light level at which it's possible to succeed in the raid (and thus it is possible to succeed at any of the other content).

all my friends are vampires (art), Monday, 28 September 2015 16:24 (eight years ago) link

i have 2 chars at 40, but only one has broken 290. i would stick with the vanguard strikes and skip the heroic past the 5 needed unless youre a masochist. rewards are pretty much the same at 36 and the 41 versions can be needlessly punishing. instead do court of oryx, you can get a lot of loot quick there

am0n, Monday, 28 September 2015 22:12 (eight years ago) link

Strikes with randoms are pretty painful at the moment, the number of people out there who don't have a clue what they're doing seems to have boomed, I end up effectively soloing most of them these days.

JimD, Tuesday, 29 September 2015 08:08 (eight years ago) link

mercifully, 36 strikes are manageable even when carrying dead weight in random match made games

all my friends are vampires (art), Thursday, 1 October 2015 00:00 (eight years ago) link

got to around ~250 light gear so far, mostly by doing strikes (finding the 36 strikes - like u said - so easy you can even have one person drop out and still finish no sweat) mixed w some crucible which - despite the fact that i'm not the biggest mp fps gamer by far - i'm finding very satisfying. the strikes are all good... the first time. esp that hive nest one w/ the pitch black final boss encounter is so tedious. hate it.

Mordy, Thursday, 1 October 2015 04:35 (eight years ago) link

The fact they're using legendary marks to strongly encourage people who don't normally play crucible to play it is making crucible a lot more fun for people (like me) who don't normally play it because there's a greatly increased chance you'll be up against other people who don't normally play it and might even manage to get a few kills in. Even came out of a few rift wins as mvp last week.

Think I'm on 286 light now? Got a lucky 300 light machine gun drop which didn't hurt.

JimD, Thursday, 1 October 2015 07:55 (eight years ago) link

re: crucible - i'm looking forward to the return of iron banner and trials of osiris (both pvp modes allow for gear/level advantages instead of re-scaling everything to a common damage/defense level as is done in vanilla crucible) to see how the new expansion affects the mechanics. trials was an exercise in futility for anyone who wasn't 1. a dead-eye sniper and 2. decked out with a specifically curated arsenal of fully ascended legendaries/exotics. the armor from trials was the best aesthetically, in my opinion, in the pre-TTK era so i'm interested to see what the new stuff looks like when it becomes available. (additionally i hope they bring PoE back into the fold with a new loot table / vendor rewards setup, since i actually used to enjoy this game mode.)

iron banner has always been a mix of fun and frustration, and i seriously hope they re-calibrate the rewards (like giving 300 light gear as options for participation for ex) as opposed to pre-TTK when the armor, the weapons were always pretty solid especially when bungie fucked up and gave final round on the spear, required ascension materials to make useful.
