Something in the Air
Hot Fun in the Summertime

Two of my favorite songs of all time...Sly gets the vote because Hot Fun is the one that I always think "oh if only this was 10 minutes long instead of 2:38..."

Hard to argue against "I Want You Back," might be the greatest vocal I've ever heard and he was fucking 10 years old.

impossible to choose one

The totally honest vote would probably be "I Want You Back" or "Gimme Shelter" or "Pale Blue Eyes" but I voted "The Boxer" cuz that's what I was feelin'.

to say nothing of the background vocals and that cool little vocal break in the middle

Anyway, shortlisting Thunderclap Newman, Gainsbourg & Birkin, Fairport Convention (Sandy Denny's voice makes my hair stand on end), and CS&N. I love the Nick Drake track here, but that feels like a random track that needs the rest of the album to put it in context.

Who Knows Where The Time Goes, easy. I'd have a tougher time if "Time is Tight" were here.

Vic Perry, Friday, 30 January 2015 18:56 (nine years ago) link

lots of excellence here of course, two of the best Neil Youngs, two of the best Rolling Stones.

Surprised "Pale Blue Eyes" is here if "What Goes On" isn't.

Vic Perry, Friday, 30 January 2015 18:58 (nine years ago) link

I love many from that list.

Jackson 5 - I Want You Back
Led Zeppelin - Whole Lotta Love
Creedence Clearwater Revival - Fortunate Son
Sly and the Family Stone - Thank You (Falettinme Be Mice Elf Agin)
Creedence Clearwater Revival - Bad Moon Rising
Crosby, Stills & Nash - Suite: Judy Blue Eyes
Sly and the Family Stone - Hot Fun in the Summertime
Fairport Convention - Who Knows Where the Time Goes
Neil Young - Cinnamon Girl
Neil Young with Crazy Horse - Down by the River

(And a few more I like just a little less.)

"Cinnamon Girl" and "Hot Fun in the Summertime" tied for #1.

Ha, I voted for this.

I'm going to vote Pinball Wizard cause nobody else will. And it's a super duper classic.

I've looked at the list twice and nothing has stood out as so much better than the other impeccable choices.

I've looked at the list twice

I wish Joni Mitchell's original-after-the-cover "Both Sides Now" were on there.

Ground Control to Major Tom
Ground Control to Major Tom
Take your protein pills
and put your helmet on

Ground Control to Major Tom
Commencing countdown,
engines on
Check ignition
and may God's love be with you

Ten, Nine, Eight, Seven, Six, Five, Four, Three, Two, One, Liftoff

This is Ground Control
to Major Tom
You've really made the grade
And the papers want to know whose shirts you wear
Now it's time to leave the capsule
if you dare

This is Major Tom to Ground Control
I'm stepping through the door
And I'm floating
in a most peculiar way
And the stars look very different today

For here
Am I sitting in a tin can
Far above the world
Planet Earth is blue
And there's nothing I can do

Though I'm past
one hundred thousand miles
I'm feeling very still
And I think my spaceship knows which way to go
Tell my wife I love her very much
she knows

Ground Control to Major Tom
Your circuit's dead,
there's something wrong
Can you hear me, Major Tom?
Can you hear me, Major Tom?
Can you hear me, Major Tom?
Can you....

Here am I floating
round my tin can
Far above the Moon
Planet Earth is blue
And there's nothing I can do.

song has been going round and round in my head, must be the picture.

The full version of "Oh Happy Day" is great, moves more than the (admittedly) pretty awesome stuff here. Hypnotic...

CCR Fortunate Son should place high

actually going for "Something."

found this on Wiki:

"Something" was Lennon's favourite song on the album, and McCartney considered it the best song Harrison had written. Frank Sinatra once commented that it was his favourite Lennon–McCartney composition (though the song was actually Harrison's) and "the greatest love song ever written". Lennon contributed piano to the recording and while most of the part was removed, traces of it remain in the final cut, notably on the middle eight, prior to Harrison's guitar solo.

Frank's version is ace (even with the "Jack!" thrown in):

1) no James Brown = WTF
2) Sly "Thank You" is the only acceptable answer

I knew Suite: Judy Blue Eyes would be shut out. That might be the most hated song I really, really love.
