Darragh complains so much about the Spurs defense that I must just have started tuning it out somehow, how else to explain that I was genuinely surprised to see that only 5 teams in the league have conceded more goals than Tottenham this season!(The bottom 4 teams + Newcastle) Conceded exactly twice as many as Southampton. Considering some of the hammerings they took last season I can't believe they've let it more this season. Just incompetent personnel, more expansive game under Poch or what?
― pandemic, Tuesday, 17 March 2015 14:21 (nine years ago) link
Also Utd haven't conceded more than one goal to any of the 'top' teams this season which can't be entirely down to de gea surely, well it could be I guess small sample size etc

apologies for utd talk on spurs thread
― pandemic, Tuesday, 17 March 2015 14:24 (nine years ago) link
well its more expansive than avb but certainly less so than Sherwood. its a high line a lot of the time, but really it is down to the fullbacks actually honest to god just not defending any of the time.
allied to really weak centre half play in the air and tackle (see Rooney goal) and sprinkle appalling positional sense across the back four and thats a serious formula for problems.
bear in mind lloris is brilliant.
bentaleb is ok but not consistent. mason closes down high up the pitch but is very poor tracking back. no winger does nothing.
defence is not, let's say, a priority.
its why I think fazio in the centre is a huge improvement on dier. a firefighter is much to be preferred in the circumstances, given that systemic problems make breaches absolutely inevitable.
vertonghen is a gifted wanker. he'd be a standout player in a disciplined back four. he's only good as a left back for us, imo, given his lack of interest and the fact that Danny rose is the incumbent.
― post you had fecund thoughts about (darraghmac), Tuesday, 17 March 2015 16:00 (nine years ago) link
Serious question, how do you think that transplanting, say, the entire Stoke back four wholesale would affect us? What would we gain and lose from doing this?
With the exception of Chelsea, most high-level teams (and aspirational high-level teams) play a high pressing game nowadays, it's either tactical fashion or just a lack of classic commanding centre backs pretty much everywhere. Teams that don't tend to be bottom-half sides playing several men behind the ball at all times and no one really wants us to play like Hull.
Think it's still a problem with individuals rather than the system, some of these errors should really have been trained out of them by now and I suspect Dier will get there, but Rose and to an extent Walker lack the basic footballing intelligence required. Vertonghen is great but needs a different kind of CB alongside him, it did seem to be working but Fazio is prone to terrible fuckups and is slow as hell.
Can people who watch a lot of Bundesliga shed any light on Kevin Wimmer? Seems to all but lined up according to reports.

ha I thought a view on systemic issues would garner me less approbrium than an outright "they're all shit and should be moved on asap" post

Tottenham wanted to get rid of England new boy Harry Kane in January 2014, only for Tim Sherwood to step in and keep him at White Hart Lane - reckons the ex-Spurs boss.
surely they just wanted to loan him out, not sell him?

So what can Tottenham fans expect of their effectively new centre back? Wimmer is calm, intelligent in build-up play, pretty tall but is still raw and has some errors in his game. According to his coach, he isn't one of those naturally gifted players, but is making up for it with a sublime work ethic. Wimmer doesn't shine or standout with special abilities but is without significant weaknesses too. Some in Cologne say the transfer is happening too early – but if someone is capable to prove a point, it's arguably Kevin Wimmer.
fee supposedly agreed. Kevin Wimmer, second most expensive Austrian footballer of all time.

I know Adebayor is a cock and a hugely inconsistent one at that but freezing him out entirely with only one proper CF on the book strikes me as asking for trouble. Can Njie play there if required?
― Matt DC, Thursday, 3 September 2015 15:24 (eight years ago) link
Son or maybe even Chadli probably better suited than Njie. Before last season, most things I read about Kane said that he was most suited to playing behind a #9.Son just scored a hat trick against Laos, so there's obviously nothing to worry about.
― mizzell, Thursday, 3 September 2015 15:48 (eight years ago) link
Njie "was named in the squad for the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations,[14] and played in one group stage match, coming on as a 67th minute substitute in a 1–0 loss to Ivory Coast.[15] Following the 2015 Cup of Nations, he continued his lethal form for Cameroon by scoring once against Thailand in March 2015,[16] and bagging a brace against Burkina Faso in June 2015.[17]"
― Matt DC, Thursday, 3 September 2015 15:52 (eight years ago) link
I don't think Berahino is really good enough to inspire such a long and obviously distracting transfer saga either. Excited for the new guys though.

Alli-Dier double pivot definitely, they controlled the midfield against the best team in the league and our general defensive solidity this season has been in no small part down to them. There might be times where a bit more worldliness is called upon but I can't see Bentaleb or Mason exactly providing that either.
Eriksen in front of them, obviously.
Lamela has been looking better and better this season and I think dropping him now would be disastrous for that momentum, so him on the RW with Son on the left, or swapping over.
Kane upfront durr.
N'jie as pacey impact sub, Chadli/Dembele as cover, Bentaleb if you need three in central midfield, Townsend at Sunderland.
