He has won the England Player of the Year award four times, in 2008, 2009, 2014 and 2015. With 51 goals in 109 international caps, Rooney is England's all-time record goalscorer and fourth most-capped player.

Ppl who treat this as the defence as opposed to admitting it as the problem are imbeciles

i met a friend of a friend a few months back and had a brief discussion with him about football, and i made this point, fairly calmly, not in the way i'd make it here, and the guy, a liverpool fan but seemingly a big fan of rooney, tried to fight me outside the pub as a result.

it was extremely strange, no amount of means to an end politeness would calm him either. drink i suppose.

Rooney's statement settles his short-term future but does nothing to address long-term issues over his future.

long-term? he's more likely to die than he is to play more than 30 more premier league games.

Bein' Sean Bean (LocalGarda), Thursday, 23 February 2017 22:33 (seven years ago) link

Former Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp says Rooney would be an "ideal" signing for United's Premier League rivals Arsenal.

"Arsenal lack somebody like Rooney - a winner, a leader," he told BBC Radio 5 live.

"He could easily go into somewhere like Arsenal and get a few of their players by the scruff of the neck on the pitch and improve their performances."

Bein' Sean Bean (LocalGarda), Thursday, 23 February 2017 22:43 (seven years ago) link

Old 'arry just now saying on tv what a great signing he'd be for arsenal, oh sweet babby jeeznuts

has there ever been a player with more bullshit behind him? i know gerrard, lampard, other english players, but the idea that rooney is some sort of leader who could shake up arsenal is beyond belief.

Bein' Sean Bean (LocalGarda), Thursday, 23 February 2017 22:50 (seven years ago) link

He's a million miles away from Lampard, Gerrard, Ferdinand or any of those in terms of myth vs reality vs salary vs harnessing an entire footballing infrastructure around.

A million miles. Each of the above was a player that significantly improved the teams they played for consistently throughout their long careers. Everything United or England have done since Rooney became their completely white hope has been despite the heaving infection.

I love the fact that he's totally irrelevant to this Utd team now

Still though, at the press conference before the St. Etienne game 90% of the hacks' questions were about Rooney. They just can't quit him

Number None, Thursday, 23 February 2017 23:15 (seven years ago) link

I've a pet theory that Moyes and Rooney were a poisonous goodbye from fergie but twas Moyes signed him to that contract, if Moyes had anything to do with it, or if Moyes was in a position to do anything but at the time. There's a theory in there somewhere tho def

any idea that he has taken up the xavi role or something and that explains why there is a such a huge drop-off after 2013/2014 is bullshit obv. he just is a player whose primary attribute was consistent attacking output which he no longer provides.

Everton have been given royal treatment since they arrived in the East African state.

The wild chants for Rooney, along with stomping performances by Maasai cultural dancers, created a spectacle to behold.

'A little reducer'

Liverpool 0-0 Everton

Martin Keown

Former Arsenal defender on BBC One

I think Wayne Rooney is saying (to the referee) 'I got there as quick as I could', but it was very late and it is a painful one for Joe Gomez. A little reducer from Rooney early on. I hope he doesn't regret that.

No lie there.

He's ready

Wayne Rooney and D.C. United have agreed on terms to become the club's newest manager, sources confirmed to @MLSist.

The Manchester United and England great arrived in DC to meet with club officials on Sunday. https://t.co/rtUAUgW0Tz

I'm not a football fan, but when I think of Wayne Rooney I always remember the plan to make a five-volume autobiography of Wayne Rooney, because ghostwritten football autobiographies were so hot back in 2006:
https://www.theguardian.com/uk/2006/mar/10/books.bookscomment

"Everyone knows Wayne Rooney has a way with words. Usually very short ones, consisting mainly of asterisks, like this recent verbal sally aimed at a Premiership referee and faithfully recorded by the tabloids: "You f***ing t*** ... you're a f***ing disgrace."

Computer screens were really narrow in 2006. Rooney was apparently given a £5m advance. This was back when the biggest-selling author in the UK was Katie Price. The joke at the time was that he was only 20, but that didn't seem particularly bad, and I imagine that nowadays there's easily enough material for half a million words about Wayne Rooney. His story is the story of Britain in the early twenty-first century, and also the 1960s, because I always felt there was something 1960s about him ("local boy done good", that kind of thing).

"Rooney's deal comes a day after Alan Greenspan, former chairman of the US Federal Reserve, signed a $9m (£5.2m) deal with Penguin for his memoirs. That deal eclipsed Pope John Paul II's $8.5m for Crossing the Threshold of Hope in 1994, but remained behind the $12m Bill Clinton is rumoured to have received for his memoirs."

I don't know if the moderators can see it, but notice how I put the italic tags inside the quote marks. Because the quote marks aren't part of the quote, they define the quote. The words are italic, not the quote marks. I may not have progressed to CSS and Javascript etc but I do know how to write clean HTML. If anybody needs someone who can add italic tags to blocks of text, email me and we can come to a deal.

It seems that one volume came out later the same year, My Story So Far, but four years on the whole thing was scrapped because England did poorly in a bunch of international tournaments. It was ghostwritten by Hunter Davies OBE, who also went on to ghostwrite John Prescott's autobiography, Prezza, My Story: Pulling no Punches. "And then I hit him" probably features in both books.

he did ok at Derby, maybe he's only any good at crisis clubs who aren't paying player wages and teetering on the edge of bankruptcy etc. His record has been just as bad as Darren Moore's and he wont get sacked. Then again we weren't in a playoff place when the useless fucker got the job.

Cook said: “Wayne’s role here is to be a leader, to drive a successful, ambitious and winning mentality.” This is another milestone for Birmingham City. With it comes great expectation.”

looking into his time at Derby, a lot of their fans consider that Rosenior was the brains behind the operation and the way their respective careers are going bears this out, well the latter is doing ok at Hull while Wazza likely won't get another job at this level.
