cosign on Lamprecht.

I think Syberberg does almost require you to be steeped in Germanic culture. If I watched this film five years ago I wouldn't have got much out of it...whereas Fassbinder works at any level.

I never thought Heimat was all that..(?)

see link in the ILX thread (h-j syberberg's 'hitler: a film from germany' -- c/d) has a free copy

It's not quite free! You're meant to make a €1 donation to the restoration of Nossendorf church spire in order to watch it.

It's messed up in most browsers I've tried, but it is downloadable. There's a taiwanese website that has the links, but it's own URL is slightly malicious-looking, so I've dropped the text into pastebin:

I voted for the Fassbinder, even though I've only seen the first two parts of Hitler, because Berlin Alexanderplatz is the best thing ever, and Syberberg would have to perform miracles in those last three hours to change my mind.

Just the 'epilogue' to go now.

I think something broke in me on EP 11 when I saw Sukowa's battered face, forgiving Franz and pleading her love to him in the park over ice cream.

Love to return to Doblin's novel - read it ten years ago, didn't get much out of it but it wasn't the right time to pick that up.
