my idea is sorta that minus the wall street journal.

his homemade videos are really endearing.

Liked the vid, didn't like the song...I just didn't want to hear the same thing over and over after a minute or so.

Well, tonight's the night: At the stroke of midnight, Neil Young will premiere his new album, Fork in the Road, on MySpace. Fans of Young's guitar salvos can stream the entire album for free before it goes on shelves April 7.

guitars sound great .. so far, better than Living With War -- I was basically expecting this to part 2 of that album.

tylerw, Friday, 3 April 2009 22:32 (fifteen years ago) link

did you like Living With War? I thought it was great...

'fork in the road'
'off the road'
'hit the road'

surely this is on purpose, right?

iatee, Saturday, 4 April 2009 01:41 (fifteen years ago) link

'middle of the road'

CaptainLorax, Sunday, 5 April 2009 05:47 (fifteen years ago) link

haven't bought this yet ... but probably will ... Neil's setlists look intense on his current tour. pretty heavy tonight's the night stuff! Speakin' Out / Tonight's The Night / World On A String / Albuquerque ... urgh i may have to shell out the $100 for the Denver show.

tylerw, Saturday, 11 April 2009 03:35 (fifteen years ago) link

nine months pass...

so i went and made an 80-minute Neil Young in the 00s mix, and honestly, after listening to all these records again, it seems like kind of a weak decade. Not terrible, but just not a lot of classic tunes ... Silver & Gold is really the only album I really enjoyed hearing all the way through. But it's not a bad 80 minutes -- send me a webmail if you want to hear it ...

tylerw, Tuesday, 12 January 2010 16:51 (fourteen years ago) link

Can you just post the track listing?

Euler, Tuesday, 12 January 2010 17:05 (fourteen years ago) link

sure, i'll do it when i get home from work ...

tylerw, Tuesday, 12 January 2010 17:14 (fourteen years ago) link

anyone else heard the recent Dreamin' Man live '92 set? listening now for the first time and think it's a real improvement on Harvest Moon

pobrecito (outdoor_miner), Wednesday, 13 January 2010 03:05 (fourteen years ago) link

I like it-- wouldn't call it an improvement but I like Harvest Moon a lot.

Mark, Wednesday, 13 January 2010 03:23 (fourteen years ago) link

Here's my best of the 00s tracklisting ...

Good To See You
Goin' Home
Differently
After the Garden
Falling From Above
Silver & Gold
Falling Off The Face Of The Earth
Spirit Road
It's A Dream
Light A Candle
No Hidden Path
Razor Love
A Day In The Life

tylerw, Wednesday, 13 January 2010 04:27 (fourteen years ago) link

Is there any other artist who's been making music for pretty much five full decades who we actually might expect would be putting out in his 6th? Like "the 00s were a little weak, but there might be some right nuggets in the 10s."

Did you say you were going to mangle the light? (staggerlee), Friday, 15 January 2010 03:53 (fourteen years ago) link

dylan's 00s were pretty tight and his 10s could be even better

kamerad, Friday, 15 January 2010 05:50 (fourteen years ago) link

really like dreamin' man too. just disappointed there will only be 9 more live archive
albums recorded between the 1970-1992 period

Jamie_ATP, Friday, 15 January 2010 09:28 (fourteen years ago) link

is that official? i remember there being a list of possible releases, but I think it turned out that was just conjecture on the part of a fan ...

tylerw, Friday, 15 January 2010 16:02 (fourteen years ago) link

(still need to get Dreamin' Man)

tylerw, Friday, 15 January 2010 16:02 (fourteen years ago) link

There's no official list, but Dreamin' Man is labelled 'Archives Performance Series No. 12', so you can probably make a decent stab at what 4-11 will be.

Joe Tackleberry (Some guy from Goole), Friday, 15 January 2010 16:05 (fourteen years ago) link

yeah, i mean Dreamin' Man might not be the last one ... There's gotta be an uhhh Mirror Ball tour CD, right? Right?

tylerw, Friday, 15 January 2010 16:08 (fourteen years ago) link

yeah...but i was thinking this was gonna be a really long term archive project so a bit disappointing at the small amount of shows

Jamie_ATP, Friday, 15 January 2010 16:16 (fourteen years ago) link

* for that period

Jamie_ATP, Friday, 15 January 2010 16:16 (fourteen years ago) link

I've heard Dreamin' Man and it's pretty nice but nothing more. But maybe it will reveal more secrets next listening.

Euler, Friday, 15 January 2010 16:20 (fourteen years ago) link

Maybe discs 13-25 will just cover '93-'97 (inc. complete Old Princeton Landings recordings, obv), who knows? But yeah, considering how everyone talks about that European tour with Pearl Jam in Shakey I'd be amazed if there's nothing released from it.

xxxpost

Joe Tackleberry (Some guy from Goole), Friday, 15 January 2010 16:21 (fourteen years ago) link

yeah, totally ... i mean, there are a ton of under-represented (and great) live bands/tours in Neil's career, esp. post 70s. Int'l Harvesters, Young & Restless, Mirror Ball Band .. . Trans Band, Shocking Pinks!

tylerw, Friday, 15 January 2010 16:24 (fourteen years ago) link

here's that list of possible performance series thangs -- again, no idea if this is official or just someone filling in the blanks
0 Canterbury 1968
1 Riverboat 1969
2 Fillmore 1970
3 Massey Hall 1971
4 Time Fades Away II 1973
5 Rainbow 1973

7 Hammersmith/Budokan 1976
8 Boarding House 1978
9 Trans Tour 1982

11 Bluenotes 1988
12 Dreamin Man 1992

tylerw, Friday, 15 January 2010 16:28 (fourteen years ago) link

tyler, you might know: are there any performances of "Cortez" from 1976 that are long, say 20+ minutes? I have two 1976 shows, one from March in Paris and one from November in Chicago. He only plays "Cortez" at the first and it's an 8 minute version, in the same spirit as the album version. But did he ever really cut loose on "Cortez" in 1976?

Euler, Friday, 15 January 2010 16:32 (fourteen years ago) link

i don't think so! All the ones I've heard don't stretch past 10 minutes. even the 1976 version of Cowgirl in the Sand is on the shorter side. but that is definitely one of my fave periods for Neil's guitar playing all the same. not a single note wasted, perfect Zuma tone.

tylerw, Friday, 15 January 2010 16:34 (fourteen years ago) link

closest comparison to neil's guitar in 1976 would have to be tom verlaine, actually!

tylerw, Friday, 15 January 2010 16:34 (fourteen years ago) link

huh, I need to listen to those shows more closely then. There's a ten+ minute "Down By The River" on the Paris show, and a 12 minute "Like A Hurricane" on the Chicago show. But o/w the songs don't reach epic liftoff.

Euler, Friday, 15 January 2010 16:38 (fourteen years ago) link

Japanese shows are probably the best of that year ... I'll get around to posting some of those soon!

tylerw, Friday, 15 January 2010 16:40 (fourteen years ago) link

three months pass...

hmm, neil young + lanois ... ? http://www.rollingstone.com/music/news/;kw=%5B13193,138765%5D

"perfect!"

lol

honestly I'm kinda amazed his voice sounds so unchanged after all these years

Here is a tasty coconut. Sorry for my earlier harshness. (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 19 May 2010 18:57 (thirteen years ago) link

yeah, compared to a lot of singers from his generation, he sounds pretty great. maybe neil was never a heavy smoker? of tobacco, that is?
