Haha that's cute, what game is it from?

fields of salmon, Wednesday, 4 February 2015 00:48 (nine years ago) link

I bought a used DSI XL offa Craigslist just to play DS games, and I'm glad I did. I didn't have a handheld after selling my DS lite in mid-07 during unemployment, so I've missed out on a lot of games. The shitty pixel magnification factor on the 3ds blurred everything out and made look horrible.

Now I just need to find a way to play fan-translated roms on there and run Fire Emblem 12.

Say, whatever happened to G-kit? He post here anymore?

Delbert Gravy (kingfish), Wednesday, 4 February 2015 22:37 (nine years ago) link

fwiw the pixel magnification can be turned off by holding select or something during startup

for fan translated roms etc you'll need a flashkart, i used a cyclods back in the day on my ds-lite and currently use a dstwo on my 3ds and would recommend them both

diamonddave85 (diamonddave85), Wednesday, 4 February 2015 23:14 (nine years ago) link

Oh I know, but the dot pitch is so tight that the image is too small to really enjoy. The dsi xl works out better.

I think the DStwo is sold out everywhere, possibly due to a new version about to arrive.

Delbert Gravy (kingfish), Wednesday, 4 February 2015 23:56 (nine years ago) link

Feels like Nintendo is angling to keep the DStwo out along with the New 3DS XL, since there's no "medium" size version of the New 3DS in the States

Nhex, Thursday, 5 February 2015 04:11 (nine years ago) link

The regular n3ds will come to the US when they've shipped off their existing models.

The monster design in MH4 is out of this world. I fought an acrobatic monkey-like creature swinging on vines and a creepy crawly web slinging spider clad in the remains of another monster, the Gypceros, which I'd also fought earlier. The fights are wildly unpredictable now, all sorts of verticality going on.

abcfsk, Sunday, 15 February 2015 12:34 (nine years ago) link

Yeh a few hours in to MH4, excellent stuff so far and improves on nearly every aspect of MH3. Initially wasn't sure about that new nub thing but now grudgingly appreciating it as a camera controller - can't see it being much use for anything that requires more accuracy tho.

( X '____' )/ (zappi), Sunday, 15 February 2015 21:02 (nine years ago) link

Yeah, the new hardware is pretty much just for one game, isn't it

Delbert Gravy (kingfish), Sunday, 15 February 2015 22:59 (nine years ago) link

still waiting for my MH4 in the mail! =|

Nhex, Sunday, 15 February 2015 23:00 (nine years ago) link

Damn you snow storms!

Nhex, Wednesday, 18 February 2015 05:44 (nine years ago) link

using nub thing feels seamless now, funny how quick you can adapt to things. had an amazing fight against the 4 star spider monster, the verticality of the stages & mounting adds so much to the fights. totally hooked again dammit!

( X '____' )/ (zappi), Wednesday, 18 February 2015 15:25 (nine years ago) link

has anyone else felt that the nub doesn't work too well with the downward motion when their uh hands are a bit sweaty?

diamonddave85 (diamonddave85), Wednesday, 18 February 2015 15:28 (nine years ago) link

The spider is a really great monster. The big snake makes up somewhat for the lack of my favorite 3rd genner Lagiacrus. Going high rank in village now, the heaven's mount village and surrounding area really speaks to me.

Is Kid Icarus 3DS worth playing at all?

Delbert Gravy (kingfish), Tuesday, 3 March 2015 19:37 (nine years ago) link

Anyone pick up Majora's Mask 3D? I'm enjoying it a lot. The save-point system is a really good improvement. I didn't like having to do dungeons in one sitting on the N64 version. Graphics are nice too.

jmm, Tuesday, 3 March 2015 19:41 (nine years ago) link

Nope, I have a dreamgear grip, tho, which may help.

Delbert Gravy (kingfish), Tuesday, 3 March 2015 19:43 (nine years ago) link

xp New save point system? That sounds great. Last time I tried to do MM on the GameCube version, the long stretches were annoying me too, until the game kept fatally crashing on the same temple and I gave up altogether. Waiting for a sale.
I should really crack open Monster Hunter anyway....

Nhex, Tuesday, 3 March 2015 19:44 (nine years ago) link

"crack" being the operative word, I just looked at my play clock and it says I've played more than 50 hours of MH4 in the last couple of weeks 0_o

( X '____' )/ (zappi), Tuesday, 3 March 2015 19:49 (nine years ago) link

xp Yeah, you can do a hard save at the owl statue warp points now, as well as at a bunch of new non-warp save points. It makes the game a bit less tense, maybe, but if you ask me it's the tension of having to complete a goal within the 72-hour period that makes the game fun, not the frustration of having to do it in one go.

Another nice change is that the bank is now right next the warp point in Clock Town. And they modified the boss fights in some interesting ways. Not many big changes, but it all feels a little more streamlined.

jmm, Tuesday, 3 March 2015 20:23 (nine years ago) link

I'm sort of interested in MH4, but not 100% sure I'd like it. I love RPGs and I like the idea of a big, patient investment in gameplay but, depending on the game, I don't always like boss fights. And this game is just boss fight after boss fight. I lack dexterity and reflexes so some boss fights where you have to dodge, arcade-style, whatever the special attack is... Will I like this game?

fields of salmon, Wednesday, 4 March 2015 02:46 (nine years ago) link

try playing the demo and if you're still not sure maybe you can grab MH3 on the cheap to try it out

diamonddave85 (diamonddave85), Wednesday, 4 March 2015 02:52 (nine years ago) link

Playing thru DQ9 lets me now see how Level-5 transitioned between the huge PS2 Dragons Quest game and something like Fantasy Life for the 3DS. Only the bones of the latter are built from MMOs, and not the standard DQ-type jrpg.

I had forgotten how much the DQ series had punny portmanteau, Pokemon-like monster names, or how much I really don't like Toriyama's single-note character design style

Delbert Gravy (kingfish), Thursday, 5 March 2015 13:16 (nine years ago) link

I don't care for the character design either, at least as far as people go (the monsters are great). But I forgive that because of the excellent puns and quality script localisation. I really liked DQ9.

"The NX" is the work-in-progress name for the next console, which is a pretty good working title.

two weeks pass...

been traveling a bunch lately so I've been getting a lot more 3DS time in.

- Shovel Knight: very good although I still feel like I'm absolutely shit at it. I love everything I see in it and badly want to see more but some parts are just such bullshit and the only way through them is to accept it
- Streetpass games: between Find Mii II, the puzzle piece exchange, Mii Force, the rock-paper-scissors one, and the haunted house one, I can count on these to take up at least 30 minutes of my time in a chunk (and more if I have a bunch of visitors). that's like Tetris levels of handheld game domination. my respect for these games continues to grow.
- Kirby Triple Deluxe: of course it's easy as shit, but the 3D is integrated really well and there's tons of stuff to do. I'm enjoying it more than any Kirby game released since Canvas Curse.
- Steel Empire: 3D port of a Genesis shmup which is just fun as balls. I am objectively terrible at these games but this one's quite approachable.
- Smash 3DS: this is still a quality game but if you have access to a WiiU get that version instead unless you absolutely demand the ability to play Smash whilst shitting.
- Theaterhythm: the best rhythm game I've played since EBA (or Ouendan 2, take your pick); I can't wait to beat it so that I can move on to the sequel, which I hear is even better.

also I got a New 3DS and while overall I love it to death, (1) I wish I could have gotten the SNES buttons and (2) I keep hitting the power button with my little finger while playing Shovel Knight.

No but I got my Etrian Mystery Dungeon preorder today.

Anyone here try Code Name: STEAM? Intrigued as its an original IP by Intelligent, but the reviews have been very mixed, on top of an early patch to supposedly fix the major design flaw with enemy turns. Sounds like the game might still be too broken, though...

Nhex, Tuesday, 14 April 2015 16:27 (nine years ago) link

There's a very lengthy demo which I thought was ok, some of the mechanics are interesting but I'm not a fan of the art style & writing.
Boxboy is cute but maybe a bit too simple/ minimalistic.

( X '____' )/ (zappi), Tuesday, 14 April 2015 16:40 (nine years ago) link

Code Name Steam is infuriating, I wish I hadn't bought it

grinding like a jolly elf (jamescobo), Thursday, 16 April 2015 23:40 (nine years ago) link

I dug the aesthetic but trying the demo makes me want to play Valkyria Chronicles more, which I already own, so no full-price 3DS purchase on that one.

Doktor Van Peebles (kingfish), Saturday, 18 April 2015 04:14 (nine years ago) link

did anyone else get the new Streetpass games (the fishing game and the zombie game)? they are both pretty good! in both cases there's tons of shit to do, fun integration of other people's Miis, and just generally fun to play - I probably like them less than Find Mii and the shooter game, but each one is at least as good as the haunted house one from the last batch of new games.

by comparison, the "Streetpass Plaza Upgrade" pack which is also available now is a stiflingly fetid pile of shit. $5 gets you another new (but really low-impact) game where you check off people's birthdays, a VIP room where you can keep all the best Miis you get (handy but eh), the ability to speed up the process by which people show up at the gate (EH), and some other stuff which is even less interesting. easily the most skippable Streetpass purchase since that stupid-ass flower-growing game.

in other news I got a Mii of Hank Hill which is just spot-on; the greeting is even "BOBBY!"

also a gentle reminder to my fellow Club Nintendo sad persons: the last day to claim your final CN reward (basically your choice of a digital game; I picked Mario Party since it was the biggest one I didn't have yet) is 4/30

i have a ton of unopened 3DS games but.. i'm too lazy to enter in the codes. I picked up Sakura Samurai with the coins I had, thanks for reminding me

I've been looking for a Nintendo equivalent to the Trigger Grip PDP makes for Vita - basically a shell that improves the ergonomics of the system (albeit at the cost of portability). someone on SA pointed out that this dude on eBay is selling a highly-regarded model that's compatible with US New 3DSes (since we only got the LL size) for a pretty decent discount when you add in shipping from Japan. mine showed up earlier this week and I've been loving it; my only gripe with the design is that it doesn't have triggers on the top end so you still have to fiddle with the actual shoulder buttons, but it's comfortable as hell and I haven't accidentally powered off my system once since starting to use it (the location of the power button is my only gripe with the New 3DS). highly recommended if you find yourself playing for long stretches.

I am as restlessly snooty with my video game accessories as you might suspect but unless this thing bursts into flames it goes on the shortlist of my favorite 3DS add-ons, along with the official DSi XL styli (I seriously bought like eight of these things, tried plenty of knockoff pen-sized DS styli and after using this model no substitute will do) and Penguin game cases, the Waterfield Designs system case (if you are genuinely allergic to money), and the charging cradle.

grinding like a jolly elf (jamescobo), Thursday, 2 July 2015 03:25 (eight years ago) link

sorry, the first link in the second paragraph of that post should go to this official page on Nintendo's webstore since I don't know where else you can get these specific styli anymore: https://store.nintendo.com/ng3/us/po/browse/productDetailColorSizePicker.jsp?categoryNav=true&navAction=jump&navCount=0&atg.multisite.remap=false&productId=prod10109&categoryId=cat10120

also I still really enjoy Kirby Triple Deluxe, I pick it up, play for a while, put it down for a few weeks, and can come back to it effortlessly. plus it makes GREAT use of 3D.

I got a digital copy of Mario Kart a while back and since I forgot to transfer my save before selling the cart I've been going back through the single player so that I can re-unlock all the shit. it really calls into high relief how ungodly awesome MK Wii U is because as much as I enjoyed blasting through MK3DS the first time, it feels tiny next to the Wii U version.

I think I like Shovel Knight better on Vita; cross-save is a godsend. if the Nintendo version had cross-save with the Wii U version I would probably love it most though; I found the second screen to be super useful.

grinding like a jolly elf (jamescobo), Thursday, 2 July 2015 03:37 (eight years ago) link

also what is the consensus best 3DS flash cart? I still have my old 3DS even though I only play on my New 3DS, so I was considering never updating it again and getting a flashcart to play DS titles which never made it stateside and have fan translations. I know Soma Bringer is supposed to be awesome and if a fan translation of Rocket Slime 2 ever came out I would play the FUCK out of it - are there other fan-translated candidates worth considering?

diamonddave85 (diamonddave85), Thursday, 2 July 2015 12:48 (eight years ago) link

The only game case I've got is the one they were selling through the stars catalogue a while back (seems to be gone now but they're probably still on ebay), it's just a regular 3ds case but with 9 slots on each side instead of one slot and a ton of wasted space.

Haven't ever considered a grip case or anything like that for the machine itself. Though given that I'm still on an original 3DS and can't play more than 20 mins before it starts to feel painful, I really should do.

JimD, Thursday, 2 July 2015 14:03 (eight years ago) link

three weeks pass...

Streets Of Rage 2 may be my favorite 3D classic released so far, although Gunstar Heroes comes out next month so it probably won't hold on to that title for too long

also my DSTwo showed up and I was pleased to discover that it works on my New 3DS (running on the most recent firmware revision). apparently Nintendo has given up on trying to rein in DS flash carts so that they can focus on 3DS models so all the good flashcarts are getting bought up, so thank u based ilx for helping me pull the trigger when I did. ultra stoked to play Retro Game Challenge 2 at last! and the Ni No Kuni DS game has been successfully translated into Spanish via fans, so there's got to be an English version coming at some point.
