much as i have been known to enjoy a spoon song in my time, their appearance here is not livelying-up what is turning out to be a slightly dull countdown thus far.

ok ill listen to this spoon thing first been then im going back to square one

53 SPOON - "Inside Out" [272 points, 9 votes, 1 first place vote]

this sounds like what would happen if you nabbed julian lennon out of the late 80s and locked him in a room with that owl city song playing over and over again until he lost his mind and then forced him to only use drum loops from the first version of GarageBand and recorded it on a tascam four track with the bass shelved out. 5/10

77 NICKI MINAJ "Lookin Ass"

wow she really really likes that word a lot. is the vocal sample her recordings of kanye locked in a well in her basement? this is super fucking stupid. there are moments where you get glimpses of her skill still but fuck off man dumb cartoon bullshit echhh. glad its short at least. 3/10

76 OWEN PALLETT "Song for Five & Six”

ignoring for a second local man wins prize and my general deep respect for what he does and trying to listen to this with unencumbered ears - dig the music, wish the vocals felt more a part of the song in some way, they're living in some alternate room of reverb or something and that always weirds me out. its a tricky song to listen to in a good way, ill be suprised if anything else in the countdown hits my rhythm complexity buttons quite so hard but something just doesnt quite click for me? 7/10

feel free to pop up and tell me why im a goddamn dolt and wrong as fuck at any point i dont want this thread to be the jjjusten polemic show plus then i wont feel so bad about unleashing the real hate inside when a few things show up

a strawman stuffed with their collection of 12 cds (jjjusten), Tuesday, 20 January 2015 17:02 (nine years ago) link

i know ur doing some pouting in the corner routine but these would all be welcome contributions to the actual thread, why don't you just post them there?

flopson, Tuesday, 20 January 2015 17:27 (nine years ago) link

I'm glad he's doing his own thing because the thread is a cesspool of suck.

EZ Snappin, Tuesday, 20 January 2015 17:34 (nine years ago) link

Oh when I pout in the corner you'll fuckin know it.

I put this here every year because I hate shitting up roll outs with my dumb thoughts because who cares? Like yeah, I hate that minaj song, that matters to me, and anybody who wants to meander in here in case I say something funny.

75 TUNE-YARDS "Water Fountain"

FULL DISCLOSURE I VOTED FOR THIS although almost as a placeholder for thinking theres something going on with her that is still kind of revealing itself. its unapologetic and weird and difficult in a way that i didnt hear a lot of this year, the song just keeps breaking apart the longer you listen and then somehow reassembles itself in the last minute. im down.

74 NINOS DU BRASIL "Sombra da Lua"

going into this completely blind and straight out of the gate i am dragged in deep, this is how i want you to drum at me, aggressive (not quiiite sure about the bass wub choice but whatever) nicely stacked and bashing and unrelenting and yeaaaaah this is how you fucking do it man welcome back late 80s industrial influence i missed you boo. would have voted for this in a high position if it had been on my radar. 9/10

Skinny Puppy a good call. Especially the blow out at the end.

Far too generous. A good sad wank song is a glorious thing.

emil.y, Thursday, 22 January 2015 13:15 (nine years ago) link

Perversely, my favourite discovery of the rollout so far has been the Katy Perry song with 782 million YouTube views which i seem to have managed to miss all year.

Yesterday was a good run.

haha i don't know what this means -- or even if it's a diss? -- but i kind of like it.

Tove Lo Tove You Baby (jaymc), Thursday, 22 January 2015 19:41 (nine years ago) link

basically the same as the "mid-tier fashion store music" diss of Rather Be, no?

rob, Thursday, 22 January 2015 19:42 (nine years ago) link

Tbh, I don't take either of those descriptions as disses, even though they may have been intended as such.

Tove Lo Tove You Baby (jaymc), Thursday, 22 January 2015 19:46 (nine years ago) link

that's true and I don't think whoever posted that even meant it as a diss, replace with "comment on"

rob, Thursday, 22 January 2015 19:47 (nine years ago) link

I've had day-long meetings for the past three days and I'm realizing now that missing the vast majority of the tracks rollout didn't bother me at all, particularly since "Two Weeks" looks to be either #1 or #2. Kind of bummed no one went for Alcest, though.

Let me help you out Charlie XCX fan (DJP), Thursday, 22 January 2015 20:44 (nine years ago) link

I'm bummed so many people think the Ear Murderers are good.

EZ Snappin, Thursday, 22 January 2015 20:46 (nine years ago) link

apparently in 2015 we have gotten to the point where a guy who would have been ok in an opening slot for dizzee is top 15 material

my sole contribution here is that i think three uk rap songs made it into the top 77 and i could not tell you what is remotely interesting about any of them

call all destroyer, Thursday, 21 January 2016 21:16 (eight years ago) link

5 Carly Rae Jepsen - Run Away With Me

maybe i should just stop doing the top ten and realize between this and a bunch of other stuff im totally out of step abt whatever people are hearing in this that is notable. 5/10

there's a lot of stuff in this list that's perfectly nice and inoffensive. kind of wish there were more tracks that blew my hair back.

Check Yr Scrobbles (Moodles), Thursday, 21 January 2016 21:40 (eight years ago) link

51 Eric Prydz - "Opus (Four Tet Remix)"

i think i would like to hear this? i'm always vaguely disappointed with four tet remixes but remixing Eric Prydz sounds like a nutso "tex wasabi's"-esque flavor explosion.

4 Miguel - Coffee

It's a pretty gorgeous song and does the backwards looking synthpop better than 90% of the other stuff ive heard from the list so far. great singer obv. i can get behind it. 8/10

4 UK rap songs made it - you presumably forgot J Hus

sounding like a silly Iain Banks on a truck (imago), Thursday, 21 January 2016 21:50 (eight years ago) link

3 Kendrick Lamar - King Kunta

i voted for this because it's great. might be the only track i had place so obv 10/10

a strawman stuffed with their collection of 12 cds (jjjusten), Thursday, 21 January 2016 21:55 (eight years ago) link

If I was going to redo my ballot, I would put more Kendrick on it, because I honestly got more enjoyment out of songs on that album as songs than I did any other album I listened to this year except for Marriages.
