The first ep of Invisibilia didn't bug me too much but I totally get why it would be grating. I hate that call & response kind of editing they did sometimes, e.g., when talking about intrusive thoughts, one subject said "murder" then they cut to another saying "murder" then "arson," "arson" or what have you.

Truly irrational, but I hate it when I see patrons using the new drive-thru at Sonic.

At the grocery store yesterday there I was 2nd in line at the self check-out, even though there was an open counter available. I pointed it out to the person in front of me and they said "That's ok, these other people are almost done, I'm just waiting to use theirs." mjsbfsjkfb

I hate this too, but I have also been a checkout chick and I remember how at first I felt too bad closing up on a line of people, and I'd always just keep serving people until the line was gone...and then I would only have like 5 minutes of my break left. After a while it was like grab that 'closed' sign and *BOOM* FUCK YOU ALL I AM ON LUUUUUUUUNCH. I would try not to be oblivious though. Oblivious was reserved for the million customers who tried to ask me for help on my WAY to the break room. I learned head down/eyes averted/completely deaf very quickly.

Also trolley rage is not irrational, VG. It is the only sane response to regular people being total assholes.

This does not happen in the USA. At least not in my USA.

It happens about once in every four occasions in London. Yes, there are lunch schedules and breaks people have to factor in, but this is not the rational, reasonable thread, is it?

i also hate cashiers/servers/baristas carrying on conversations with each other while customers are being served, even if they are ringing you up while doing it.

I worked at a very crappy, small supermarket with no 'this checkout is open' lights. We had the signs you put up and that was it.

VG, what about cashiers in small stores talking ON THE PHONE while they ring you up? Like, personal conversations. Encountered this everywhere in England, my IA was out of control.

i worked for a union place where working through meals or breaks was not an option, and the company wouldn't have let me stay clocked in for any more time than they had agreed to pay me for. i was often told "go clock out and take lunch right now" by a shift lead even though there was a line full of people. so try not to blame cashiers when this happens; most of the time they're not doing it to be dicks.

this is a management-level problem and probably a corporate-culture problem. and the unions, as imperfect as they are, are only protecting the employees by being so inflexible about things like breaks. those breaks matter.

good cashiers in places with the light-up indicators turn them off reasonably early and then usher a quick last cart through if there's time before a break.

In my America they also block the lane with a chain, a sign on a post, or at least a shopping cart.

yep, rally parking is when you back the car in so the nose points out. it's just so smug

I park this way whenever I load groceries. It excites me to think there are people becoming angry at the sight of it.

paramedics & firefighters i know tend to habitually do this in case of quick getaway which is fine

but sitting in a parking lot waiting for some bozo to reverse his boat-sized pickup into a spot is enraging

90% of ppl that i encounter doing this are terrible drivers who suck at reversing & shd be murdered

I saw I Australia angled parking spaces at the curb facing away from oncoming traffic to encourage this "rally" parking.

Also everyone had their rear view mirrors pulled toward them at a 45° angle which I couldn't understand either.

Never heard the phrase "rally parking" before this thread but when I visited a friend in Singapore he pointed out that 99% of the cars there are parked this way - something to do with orderliness or planning for the future or some other supposed shared cultural norm.

This friend had also lived in Thailand (where we were also going to visit) and told me to compare the parking there. When I got out of the Phuket airport and looked for a cab everything was just parked in a giant swarm with empty cars left in neutral so people could push them out of the way as needed. Our cabbie had to move a couple to get his car out.

my (corporate) workplace has an online driving class as part of our yearly junk, required if you drive for work at all. it strongly encourages backing in to parking spaces as backing out of parking is responsible for something like 90% of parking lot accidents

having been hit in a parking lot, seems to make sense to me
