every new year i tell myself that i'm going to put some pounds on this year, and i fail. this year i've just admitted to myself that it's not going to happen. however i'm doing very well with my new pledge to stop biting my nails, so those extra millimeters of nails should add some mass

♪♫_\o/_♫♪ (Karl Malone), Tuesday, 6 January 2015 17:38 (nine years ago) link

i can also use my new nail powers to aluminum cans more efficiently, so that could also lead to some +pounds

they don't call it a healthy appetite for nothin'

karl seriously i recommend something you can get into your body with as little fuss as possible -- smoothies are the best thing for me.
frozen fruit, plain kefir, juice, some spinach -- blend thoroughly and guzzle through a big bubble tea straw. repeat for as long as needed until you feel better.

Sorry LL; I hope your appetite & spirits have a healthy rebound ASAP!

Last year I made the mistake of meeting up with a friend who was in town on a day I was super soul-crushingly depressed and unable to eat anything. My friend decided he wanted to meet up with some of his other friends at a fancy gastropub, where I drank ice water for fifteen minutes before splitting because it was all just so awkward and unpleasant. Blowing a big wad of money on a meal was about the last thing I wanted to do at that point. My gut felt like it was full of rocks. (Maybe it was??)

i've been feeling really bad about how in overdrive my appetite has been the last 3 months, but i try to remind myself of how utterly awful it has been in the past to lose all appetite and physical/mental ability to put anything in my mouth, let alone actually swallow it, when i've been suffering severe anxiety.

i second the rec of smoothies and fat straws - you can add oats and nuts to the blender to make them even more nutritious and meal-like.

liquids are so much easier. i've been drinking a ton of milk.

tonight, late dinner: spoonful of honey. i resent my body's need for food, even sweet stuff is just kind of meh.

sushi is good even when my appetite sucks, though--i should get some soon.

JuliaA, Monday, 17 August 2015 03:00 (eight years ago) link

one of the worst things about losing your appetite is the cumulative effect of not being nourished. the longer it goes on, the worse you feel and the less you want to eat. hope you feel better soon!
i wish i knew why sushi was so magical. i guess it's because it's visually appealing, cool, fresh, and delicious.

yesssss but only the good kind ime. I want sushi now but I can only get not-good sushi around here.

Sigh this morning the combo of hot hot weather plus my sunburn from this weekend were making me feel like I might never eat again. Going heavy on the fruit and nuts today. And Starbursts, which are apparently my favorite food this summer.

often I'll be hungry but unable to muster the desire to eat a specific food, and when I do, it's probably not the healthiest, as my diarrhea diary (speaking of embarrassing) will attest.
I feel like there isn't enough English vocabulary or idioms around appetite and hunger to express what are really very different kinds of discomfort, so they all get lumped in to "i'm hungry/not hungry"
I heard a cool one that translated to "rats running around in my stomach" which is like a specific kind of hunger, right?

Sympathies to you LL.

My own eating habits are admittedly strange but probably not fatal. I almost never eat breakfast. I often skip lunch altogether. At most dinnertimes I'll pick lightly at food in an obligatory way but my heart's usually not in it. Throughout the day, I'll grab a handful of almonds or dried cherries or something and I'm good.

At the same time, every week or so I'll have one rich, dense, sybaritic meal, like a pizza or a bacon cheeseburger the size of my head, and I seem to live on that for a while. That's how some snakes eat, right? Nothing for weeks, but then a whole monkey all at once, which takes weeks to digest?

Left to my own devices, I think I would eat only when I really wanted to. It's complicated somewhat because I am in a family, so we kinda have to keep up a regular rhythm (adults can choose to just graze; kids can't and shouldn't). So I keep up appearances. I pack lunches for the children. Every other night, I prepare and serve a decently balanced dinner, but frequently my heart isn't in it.

here come the warm jorts (Ye Mad Puffin), Wednesday, 29 November 2017 15:37 (six years ago) link

wow seriously, when i was a kid, one of the things i looked forward to most about being a grown up was not being forced to eat when i didn't want to, to be able to graze as i pleased. now that i can, i take full advantage and eat only when and what i want. usually that is a-ok fine, until one of these spells hits.

weird woman in a bar (La Lechera), Wednesday, 29 November 2017 15:41 (six years ago) link

that is not a commentary on parenting -- just a memory, like going over to grandma's and being asked to eat a huge plate of food for thanksgiving that i really didn't want. my mom is a grazer too.
