what did the owners look like

One was the Bangladeshi wide-boy who lives across the road from me, one was a blonde in her twenties wearing earmuffs.

they do seem to have a more heterogeneous ownership cohort that staffies

I love pit bulls but people have to be careful when adopting and raising them. Some are dog-aggressive and some are not. It's important to raise them from puppyhood or be very careful & spend time with the dog before adopting an older pit.

"camo pants" look like leopardskin jeggings there.
my sweetheart pit spent a few days with me and I took her to cancer treatment. She was very well mannered and is in remission which is a blessing.

I have become addicted to "Pit Bulls and Parolees" on Animal Planet. I cry when the pups get their "forever home". Now I am convinced that my next dog will be a pit bull rescue.

Freeland Avenue (I M Losted), Saturday, 28 March 2015 22:21 (nine years ago) link

If you go to a shelter, you'll just get sad that something like 50-60% of all the available dogs there are pibbles and you can't adopt all of them. (That percentage is way higher in some cities, as I noticed here in Atlanta where it was probably closer to about 80%.)

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 29 March 2015 00:46 (nine years ago) link

jersey and new york have pit exclusive rescue shelters; assholes just throw them out like gum wrappers

i've always owned golden retrievers and have never really known a pit bull until my roommate adopted one this year, a really muscular dude named "buckshot" who came from a shelter in georgia.

have to say, while i still miss my retriever (who lives with my parents now) buckshot is a very cool dude. one thing that's interesting is that he behaves completely differently from the golden retrievers i have had. while they have all been lightly mischievous, stealing things all the time and running around the house, jumping on people, etc., buck never does that stuff. he is extremely serious. right now he is standing at attention in the doorway to my room, looking at me and waiting for marching orders. whenever he is given an instruction, like "get off the couch" he just automatically does it. goldens pretend they don't hear you half the time ime.

another thing, while my golden retrievers have always liked strangers equally as much as me and my other family members -- jumping around in excitement whenever someone comes to the door -- buckshot is not like that at all. it took a while for all the roommates to earn his trust and now he really likes all of us. but he is somewhat skeptical of strangers still and doesn't like other dogs. when there are people outside in the hallway of our building -- which happens 100 times a day because this is an apartment building -- he barks like a madman and seems to believe we are under siege.

i don't know how much of these behavior differences are due to breed differences rather than individual quirks. buck flips out and growls when you take a toy away from him -- usually because he wrecked it and it seems like a choking hazard -- which i think is a breed thing. georgie (my golden retriever) is so blase about that stuff.

the anti-pit bull bias on this thread is obscene though. i mean, i have never seen him be aggressive in a way that is problematic. he has an intense, serious personality, which is sort of funny bc he lives in an apartment full of mild mannered creative types, but i am pretty sure he would never hurt anyone unless he thoguht one of us was threatened. (he does seem to think it's his job to protect us.) he is a noble animal for sure.

think your guy is your guy tbh. I've known plenty of pits who were goofballs, acrobats and/or snuggle bandits

My boss brings her pitbull to work and she's a really affectionate clown. My co-worker also has a pit. That one is a little more laid-back, but still a goofball.

a couple years ago a gigantic pitbull named Razor sprinted toward me and sent me to the hospital with modest chunks of my lower leg missing.

despite that, i love pitbulls. they have a bad reputation but they are so fucking sweet it's unbelievable. they love to cuddle on the couch and get the deep rubs. <3

I look forward to hearing from you shortly, (Karl Malone), Monday, 23 May 2016 21:11 (seven years ago) link

The dog liked to jump at tree branches, which my boss' pit does too. xp

there is an old bloke around the corner from me who has two sibling pitbulls called Buddy and Holly. They are both absolutely adorable, despite the threatening sign he has put on his gate - they are harmless and lovely.

Just round the next bend on the estate there is this fucker with a horrible teeth on legs thing that almost ripped my Labrador's ear off. I got so mad that I had a few drinks later and put a few inch and half 8" screws into the cunt's tyres - just for thinking it was amusing rather than a seriously dangerous incident.

he probably hears something. dogs sometimes play at imaginary threats but cats, if they get restless, are worse. all that random yowling at nothing.

sorry to share this as its distressing but I always feel like, yes they are kind of cute at times but since all breed of dog is just a genetic variant why not stop this particular variant since we cannot trust people in general to keep them locked up

Dean of the University (Latham Green), Thursday, 22 June 2017 17:54 (six years ago) link

every breed of dog that has strong enough jaws to bite a person in a way which causes damage is potentially dangerous

as ever it's always the owner's fault. anyone who has a dog that mauls someone should be jailed and banned from owning animals imo

-_- (jim in vancouver), Thursday, 22 June 2017 18:01 (six years ago) link

you should at least need some kind of license to own certain breeds - and some kind of inspection of your property /set up

agreed its not the dogs fault - its the government's fault for not regulating stupid humans

Dean of the University (Latham Green), Thursday, 22 June 2017 18:02 (six years ago) link

it definitely is the dog's fault. pitbulls are genetically predisposed to attack. the breed should be banned.

heaven parker (anagram), Thursday, 22 June 2017 18:04 (six years ago) link

imo they're not any more aggressive or prone to flip out than most other breeds, but they're very high energy and are insanely strong
