Why didn't she record an album of Mansun covers?

Dingbod Kesterson, Thursday, 27 March 2008 16:37 (sixteen years ago) link

It looks like one of those cuet young classical virtuoso albums.

Hurting 2, Thursday, 27 March 2008 16:38 (sixteen years ago) link

Somebody else listen to this and tell me how awful it is. I kinda like Scar-Jo but seriously Tom Waits' songs? You fucking bitch.

nickalicious, Thursday, 27 March 2008 16:40 (sixteen years ago) link

Imagine if she did a Fishbone covers set...

C. Grisso/McCain, Thursday, 27 March 2008 16:43 (sixteen years ago) link

she should do "babyhead"

chaki, Thursday, 27 March 2008 16:44 (sixteen years ago) link

I was hoping she'd do a Tim Dog covers album.

Dom Passantino, Thursday, 27 March 2008 16:44 (sixteen years ago) link

hahah. mansun covers.

Charlie Howard, Thursday, 27 March 2008 17:25 (sixteen years ago) link

Okay, I might be down with a Scar-Jo "Warmth of Your Breath".

nickalicious, Thursday, 27 March 2008 17:28 (sixteen years ago) link

I actually kind of like the song that was posted from pitchfork. Does that make me a bad person? Its really dreamy and she can't sing but it almost doesn't matter.

I can't help but compare her to Chloë Sevigny, who has real taste.

Ohhh nooo I thought this was a joke.

i have not heard this, but it really must be terrible

John Justen, Tuesday, 22 April 2008 07:43 (sixteen years ago) link

I kind of like some of what I've heard so far. I'm actually looking forward to hearing the whole album.

"i have not heard this, but it really must be terrible"

ILM in a nutshell.

you sound like the kind of guy who drinks spoiled milk after smelling it, just to make sure.

I listened to youtube clips of her songs. Her voice is great. But you'd rather just assume it's awful, ignore the easy links to the music, and post snarky comments.

ILM in a nutshell.

Just got offered a promo of this. Not sure what I think of the project, but I'm definitely willing to give it a shot for free.

Telephone thing, Tuesday, 22 April 2008 22:35 (sixteen years ago) link

could be good

omar little, Tuesday, 22 April 2008 22:36 (sixteen years ago) link

what?

RabiesAngentleman, Wednesday, 23 April 2008 07:26 (sixteen years ago) link

"anywhere i lay me head" (the track) is quite ok.
she is not the best singer in the world,so it's good sitek buried her voice in the mix, but it has nice melancholic atmosphere with the production.
not that im going to listen to it again, but u might say sitek saved her here.

Zeno, Wednesday, 23 April 2008 08:46 (sixteen years ago) link

two months pass...

sorry to be bumping this but I just heard her cover of Boys Don't Cry and its possibly the worst thing I've ever heard

sonderangerbot, Sunday, 20 July 2008 02:00 (fifteen years ago) link

I'm really into this album, but maybe because I quite dislike Tom Waits and I like JAMC.

I know, right?, Sunday, 20 July 2008 19:05 (fifteen years ago) link

I dunno, it's produced well enough but her vocal performances are pretty lackluster

Hurting 2, Sunday, 20 July 2008 19:25 (fifteen years ago) link

Guys I have to admit, this is pretty fucking good for a covers album.

stephen, Saturday, 9 August 2008 06:16 (fifteen years ago) link

The liner notes with Sitek comparing the atmosphere to an old 4AD record are, surprisingly, spot on.

stephen, Saturday, 9 August 2008 06:20 (fifteen years ago) link

Dare I say...

This album > Return to Cookie Mountain

stephen, Saturday, 9 August 2008 06:24 (fifteen years ago) link

you could add a few more of these:>>>>>>>>>>>

Seriously this album is good good good. I think the arrangements are muggier and more natural than 4AD. Which I like.

I know, right?, Sunday, 17 August 2008 13:45 (fifteen years ago) link

Like, it's not as ethereal as the Cocteau Twins, it's not as wispy and echoey.

I know, right?, Sunday, 17 August 2008 13:46 (fifteen years ago) link

I like how plainsung it is too, title song is kind of beautiful and the relationship between her voice and that snare/handclap, the way her vocals are just limp enough to drape over the occasional jolt in the arrangement.

I know, right?, Sunday, 17 August 2008 13:47 (fifteen years ago) link

I concur, this is much better than I expected. Sitek did it up right.

And no, you may not dare

Cookie Mountain>>>this record.

This album is so addictive.

Whiney G. Weingarten, Wednesday, 19 November 2008 16:41 (fifteen years ago) link

I love the hivemind mentality that dead, tuneless singing is totes awes when it's on an Italians Do It Better 12" by Farah, but an affront to music when it's from OMG FAMOUS ACTRESS

Whiney G. Weingarten, Wednesday, 19 November 2008 16:42 (fifteen years ago) link

right.

anyway it didn't sound dead and tuneless to me, more alive and purposeful.

i need to hear this in full though.

I've encountered Whiney on numerous message boards and he is one of the absolute worst cases of "I listen to mainstream horseshit in a thinly-veiled attempt to separate myself from you Pitchfork-listeners" there is. I encountered a bunch of these dudes back when Britney Spears' "Toxic" came out.

Reatards Unite, Wednesday, 19 November 2008 21:47 (fifteen years ago) link

hey i'll take that over "i listen to (mainstream) Pitchfork indieshit in a thinly-veiled attempt to separate myself from you Brit-bots"

any day.

Surmounter, Wednesday, 19 November 2008 21:50 (fifteen years ago) link

does this count as mainstream horseshit though? horseshit surely (IMHO!!!) but I didn't know it was that successful otherwise

Pitchfork-endorsed albums that came out this year that I'll totally rep for: Gang Gang Dance, Jay Reatard, Marnie Stern, TV On The Radio, Fuck Buttons, Lindstrom, Harvey Milk, Vivian Girls.

Cute try, though.
