1959 was Oregon's centennial year as a state. The photo was most likely taken on the precise date of the celebration, February 14, 1959.

I wonder if the planners were upset that Alaska and Hawaii had to come along and steal their thunder that year
― breakfast josiah (los blue jeans), Saturday, 3 January 2015 20:30 (nine years ago) link
Outside Oregon, I'm sure no one cared, but in Oregon there was plenty of thunder to go around. Button-bursting state pride was the style at the time.

My mum scanned a whole series of pre-75 scans on slides taken by my grandad. Unfortunately 90% of hem look like they were taken at the heart of the sun but I will pick out some that can be looked at without sunglasses.

Probably could have been been in the "lol college" thread as well but whatever. I believe this is 1994 right after I razor-and-foam shaved my head which had previously been some shade of manic panic red.

Also just remembered that these aren't even cut off pants, but a set of Dickie's coveralls that I cut down into pants and cut holes into which allowed me to thread a shoelace around my waist to serve as a drawstring. Then I cut them down into shorts.

I went to camp 4 summers in a row. It was always horrible and scarring and I, optimistically?, always chose to go back because I didn't want to potentially miss out on anything. Like being tortured.
Middle of 2nd row looks like a mean girl.
― Orson Wellies (in orbit), Friday, 3 April 2015 15:29 (nine years ago) link
otm about that girlmy memory is airtight generally speaking and my complete lack of memories about this experience leads me to conclude that it was exceptionally bad, even worse than what i do remember (complete alienation from everyone around me, etc)

I went to camp once when I was maybe 11? And the day we arrived I got my period, and I cracked my shin so hard on a bunk that I still have a scar from it, and we managed to get a counselor fired for threatening to tie us to chairs in the shower, and the entire week's highlight was going screaming, Beatlemania apeshit about some of the male counselors doing an air guitar performance at the end of the week talent show.
It was gross and I never went back. Down with camp.
LL you don't look happy in that picture. I want to go back in time and take you out of there.

The kids I went to school with treated me like prey, but we'd known each other our whole lives and I was their prey. The kids at camp harbored no such warm, familial feelings. It was a church camp, even.

I always wanted to go to camp so much. Only went once, to space camp, but that was just a week. I wanted a whole summer away from home, because it was so boring.
― Jeff, Friday, 3 April 2015 16:02 (nine years ago) link
i was not happywhat i do remember: my parents were in Japan, I was stuck at a Christian camp where they fostered spiritual unity and inter-cabin competition and I was not a Christian nor was I interested in competing, and everyone actively hated me thanks to the girl I had been sent there with (top row next to sunglasses) because she told them to. i then went back to her house for a few days til my parents came home and all i remember is hiding in the basement. yesterday was her 40th bday. she's a republican!

I went to girl scout camp once, for a week. I was not a horse girl, but I signed up for the horse camp program, thinking I could maybe become a horse girl. It was fun, but a lot of work and fuck abuncha hanging out with horse girls.

Jeff, is that Huntsville Space Camp or Canaveral Space Camp? I grew up in Huntsville and went myself in 1986, so I always get a little geeked when people from far away can say they visited my dumb hometown.

I was supposed to go to sleepaway camp for the summer one year but I got scared and didn't want to go and backed out at the last minute. I'm pretty sure I would have hated it so it's probably for the best.
I went to a day camp on Fire Island every year and then worked there until I went to college. That was pretty amazing. Camp pic:

The kids go to a public school that every year sends the 5th graders to Space Camp in Huntsville.
The district has been in a little flux lately (we currently have no school board, long story), so we've got our fingers crossed that the school can hold it together until 2018.
