Oh, don't get me wrong! D'Angelo is a very talented musician. I'd just never heard any key playing that particularly blew me away, not that there was anything wrong with it. But D'Angelo's not, like, some Stevie Wonder virtuoso, regardless. But he's super tasteful, so it's hard to tell. I did always think the "he can play anything!" thing was a little overblown. Most of "Brown Sugar" is pretty simple (to its credit). D'Angelo is not Prince in that regard, and does not need to be.

But yeah, some of the more technical jazzy guitar licks on this album, no, 10 years of adult time will not get you there.

Based on what I've seen, D is probably a better keyboardist than Prince. Remember a lot of the flash wow keyboard moments on Prince's records were Fink.

not that it matters, but on a couple of my Prince bootleg dvds he does a little medley on solo piano, and it is murderous.

RT on some gzeus shit

In Japanese.
Not that I could read alot of it(one character speaks in an insanely thick and formal SAMURAI dialet, the royal family speaks high keigo which I oddly understood... not sure what that means. Alot of Kanji, too), what I did read is alot funnier, and I wouldn't have to read it anyway.
I could play it in russian, swedish, arabic... DOESN'T MATTER. I can play it with my feet without looking directly at the creen. I'VE DONE IT BEFORE.
In fact I set the battle modes to harder ones just for more of a challenge.
THE ATTACK NAMES ARE DIFFERENT AND IT DOESN'T MATTER.
I haven't played it in years and I can just go "Oh, now I need to do that, so I'll press this sequence of buttons and kill"
SPINAL FUNCTION.
If I did a blood transfuction I'm sure the recieving human(in addition to getting high from all the meds) would BE ABLE TO PLAY CHRONO TRIGGER.

That's not very long, either. I used to do 4-5 hour stretches. I don't remember how long it took to beat lavos when I'm SUPPOSED to lose...

I've seen all 11 main endings and variations of most of them.
I used to level up by playing the game through.
Fight the same series of wimps in the forect for an hour or two? I DON'T THINK SO. I think I'll BEAT THE GAME 3 times.
The same way EVERY TIME.
Fastest way to winning.
Then I'd work at accumulating more items and becoming so strong NOTHING could stop me. But only after completing EVERY POSSIBLE SIDE STORY.

This was accomplished in part by a trick my brother (ex-in-law) found.
He spend 6 hours fighting the same battle over and over.
Steal the same item from the same monsters.
I was FLOORED when I heard that.
He had a save on the system with MAXED OUT magic power on EVERY character.
Then I went on to bit by bit max every character as much as possible.

Then I lent it to my then girlfriend, and somehow that save was erased.
it's wuite possible the fact that I had a Game Gear save on it that was so fucked it screwed the system, but she may (VERY DOUBTFUL) have deleted it on purpose, but I think she was ashamed of ACCIDENTALLY deleting it and lied.
But I don't remember if you CAN just delete a save in CT....

This game was my sole entertainment source save random TV things for 2-3 years.
THAT'S INSANE.
I had an old-school Geocities site(long gone, I loved it) dedicated to subtexts and retardo descriptions of characters.
I sprayed my hair the color of my fav character, I bought a replica sword like the one he carried, GREW MY HAIR TO THE SAME LENGTH.
Used his name on EVERY message board, wait, they were all CHAT ROOMS then.
Remember CHAT ROOMS?
There was a CT chatroom I had regular DAILY meetings in.
I SOMEHOW developed a crush on the webmaster until I saw she was really palsied and horse-like.
Still cool. Not attractive.

WOW.
This is the most meaningless crap I've ever written, but it's a bit of an insight onto how far into things I get.

Any CT fans?
Anyone else have a similar past with a different game?

Hey yeah can we go back to talking about how amazing "1000 Deaths" and "The Charade" and "Sugah Daddy" (and the rest of the album) are and stop talking about whether D'Angelo would win an amazing rap battle of history with Mozart or whatever

I know this album isn't really that short -- 56 minutes -- but the sequencing makes it feel like it ends too soon. The back half is so strong and flows so well together that it's a letdown when it ends. Feels like it should keep going and going.

something of an astrological coup (tipsy mothra), Saturday, 20 December 2014 04:59 (nine years ago) link

the songs on this record are among the shortest 5-minute songs i've ever heard... i mean that as a major compliment. they are so engaging and engrossing, and they end and i'm like, "wait, that's it? i could have listened to another 10 minutes of that."

that' what happens when you have real musicians playing real instruments and a vocal genius leading them

One of the reasons I love "Sugah Daddy" is cause it sounds like if the "just because the record's got the groove" part of "Sir Duke" was extrapolated into a full song.

deadmaus's clit is MIDI?

waddy watchel (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Saturday, 20 December 2014 14:03 (nine years ago) link

Ben Kane says it's Mark Hammond (not familiar but he's a jazz dude apparently) on the fancy flamenco guitar on 'Really Love', D on other guitars, and Gadson on drums again (fooled me! the extra snaps and claps make it sound very Quest-ish).

listening back to that bootleg that went around a few years ago and the final version is definitely an improvement.

virtuoso thigh slapper (Jordan), Saturday, 20 December 2014 15:05 (nine years ago) link

As always, I enjoy/appreciate the instrumental detail and feel, regardless of who plays what where, and here the lyrics add something, though also as always, the vocals keep me a little detached, and currently get a little annoying, with that tendency to blur, if not strain---doesn't always happen: I really like "Sugah Daddy" for inst, and ”Till It’s Done (Tutu)” is very fine---but whatever you think of this set, don't sleep the *actual* Sly's 2014 (imperfect but often excellent) anthology, which is also timely, in a startling way, esp. keyboard-wise:

Third Eye Girl might be the worst backing band ever, so gross clubfooted bar band gunk

waddy watchel (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Saturday, 20 December 2014 17:47 (nine years ago) link

made me listen to lots of old 70s and 00 soul i havent touched in a while (as well as prince). find it hard listening to individual tracks - it only really works as an album to me, though i do find certain phrases popping into my head every so often. sometimes think all the labour and attention to detail has maybe come at the expense of immediacy (save for sugah daddy), but then i think thats always been there in dangelos music.

not to return to the virtuoso argument but i think we do often conflate 'multi instrumentalist' with 'virtuoso'.

StillAdvance, Saturday, 20 December 2014 18:11 (nine years ago) link

Didn't realize he was managed by Eric Leeds. Between Leeds, Jesse Johnson and John Blackwell, whole lotta Prince in the D'Angelo family.
