wait, reversed course from what to what? seems like NK has been the consensus culprit all along

goole, Thursday, 18 December 2014 19:59 (nine years ago) link

idk from what i could tell there was a growing consensus of "it was probably not north korea" with the wired article being the crest of that wave

...the hack against Sony Pictures was carried out by a "sophisticated actor"...

...a hacker who identified as "lena"...

and we know the hacker's are in contact with entertainment news websites...

is there no end to her crimes

i support sony's decision to cancel the movie. didn't it already almost fuck up some diplomatic negotiation with japan involving the return of political prisoners?

Treeship, Thursday, 18 December 2014 21:10 (nine years ago) link

Hackers connected to the Sony break in released a new statement on Thursday morning: ITS ABOUT ETHICS IN GAMES JOURNALISM

cryptic..

When they came for Seth Rogen, I said nothing for I'm not Seth Rogen. When they came for Larry The Cable Guy, I said "He lives over there."

from the guys that brought you the link between iraq and al qaeda comes the link between north korea and hackers who give channing tatum's e-mails to mashable

da croupier, Friday, 19 December 2014 19:11 (nine years ago) link

FBI did not link iraq to al qaeda but thx for playing

Obama slams Sony for "making a mistake"

a pleasant little psychedelic detour in the elevator (Amory Blaine), Friday, 19 December 2014 19:15 (nine years ago) link

obv i have no more of a clue than anybody but if this is the biggest smoking gun

the FBI discovered that computer Internet addresses known to be operated by North Korea were communicating directly with other computers used to deploy and control the hacking tools and collect the stolen Sony files.

there's still a lot of grey area

da croupier, Friday, 19 December 2014 19:15 (nine years ago) link

the smoking gun is the american govt being like "believe us this is what happened" which.... do you, i guess, if you wanna believe it

J0rdan S., Friday, 19 December 2014 19:24 (nine years ago) link

which isn't to say it's not what happened but, you know

J0rdan S., Friday, 19 December 2014 19:24 (nine years ago) link

unlike all the Iraq bullshit, I'm not really sure what ulterior motive the Obama administration would have for blaming NK for this

Οὖτις, Friday, 19 December 2014 19:31 (nine years ago) link

I wish I had not started this discussion in the Franco LIPS thread but i did not foresee presidential press conferences

things lose meaning over time (Dr Morbius), Friday, 19 December 2014 19:35 (nine years ago) link

the government is saying there is a "link" to nk. that they are responsible for the malware. if you want to extrapolate from that that kim jong-il was so mad about The Interview that he ordered a brazen cyberattack where they took terabytes of a multinational company's most precious information and used it to LET BLOGS KNOW THAT SCOTT RUDIN IS A DICK, fine. A wacky Pearl Harbor from the wackiest despot.

da croupier, Friday, 19 December 2014 19:37 (nine years ago) link

this is actually a sequel to 1941

things lose meaning over time (Dr Morbius), Friday, 19 December 2014 19:38 (nine years ago) link

I doubt this hack becomes a serious issue if sony didnt have comically shitty security

panettone for the painfully alone (mayor jingleberries), Friday, 19 December 2014 19:40 (nine years ago) link

comically shitty security that was already attacked by the kind of goofy ass hackers that would e-mail buzzfeed and write crazy shit in faux-broken english in the past. but now the idea is that north korea's plan was to steal all the best shit, embarrass some celebrities, threaten domestic terrorism if the movie isn't pulled, and then say "thank you, watch yourself" when it is. ok.

da croupier, Friday, 19 December 2014 19:49 (nine years ago) link

as for why the government would prefer to put the attention on a sanctioned foreign state (who may well have paid for the hackers pizzas), history and hollywood itself have provided plenty of examples of it

da croupier, Friday, 19 December 2014 19:54 (nine years ago) link

and while i'm being all wag the dog, let's just note that before peace with cuba and a stand-off with north korea the hot topic was massive public protests of domestic policy

Where's that "phrases you hate" thread?

"IT'S OFFICIAL". Ugh.

I guess I'll put on my tin foil hat and sound like a crazed loon.

Of course the US wins in making this a North Korea issue.

----

GOOD MORNING, AMERICA, do you want crazy Asian man stealing from the beautiful, true all-American symbol that is Hollywood? They are now trying to smear the best of the best that this glorious country has to offer: Celebrities and Hollywood; true representations of what makes this blessed country unique!

For the sake of the American people, with safety and security comes a little less freedom. I know whatchoor thinkin. Ex president George Duh-bull-you Bush. But let me assure you we take all threats seriously, because each and every life is invaluable.

----

What people in the West don't realise is that China is talking about the next big war, and it's with Japan. China still allies itself with North Korea. Yes, all of this is conjecturing, but it's still a little scary. And I can picture the Obama administration rubbing their hands together with a sinister grin thinking, "Perfect." Repercussions, yo.

----

tl;dr: There are incentives to falsely placing the blame on North Korea. Gaining public support for their devious acts is what America is now known for. But whatevz

how much did you guys pay for those tinfoil hats?

simplest explanation usually the correct one occam's razor etc

Οὖτις, Friday, 19 December 2014 20:57 (nine years ago) link

idk i feel like this is a good case for exposing the lie of occam's razor as a normalizing force, kind of delillo irl. the simplest explanation is what will have happened, truth is a production when the action is spread across so many players, the driving forces are totally symbolic and a-rational, etc. the fact that franco is involved is either .. interesting or exasperating depending on your pov i guess.

languagelessness (mattresslessness), Friday, 19 December 2014 21:13 (nine years ago) link

i think it's using the word definition of "simple" to accept "kim jong-il, he crazy" as an explanation for everything that happened

da croupier, Friday, 19 December 2014 21:14 (nine years ago) link

woops, meant the wrong definition

da croupier, Friday, 19 December 2014 21:15 (nine years ago) link

I think reconciling the goals of hackers with N Korea is kinda more difficult to accept

Οὖτις, Friday, 19 December 2014 21:16 (nine years ago) link

all i'm saying is that "the us said north korea did it, that's what happened" ignores what exactly the us saying saying north korea did, and what was done. to respond with "yeah, well, occam's razor" isn't exactly a comeback.

da croupier, Friday, 19 December 2014 21:22 (nine years ago) link

I wonder how the world would react if NK stopped with the nukes and sabre rattling and whatnot and simply acted like a huge asshole all the time. The Troll Kingdom.

Kim's dad was big into movies. Maybe this is Jr. making a statement.

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 19 December 2014 21:29 (nine years ago) link

i don't think "hey this isn't the first time hackers have done this" and "hey this isn't the first time our government has been quick to point the finger at a convenient foreign target" are particularly tin-foil obsverations

da croupier, Friday, 19 December 2014 21:29 (nine years ago) link

well it would be the first time that non-NK affiliated hackers goals just happened to coincide with NK's goals

Οὖτις, Friday, 19 December 2014 21:31 (nine years ago) link

If you think I'm arguing that NK is clearly "innocent" or something you're wrong. I just don't buy they master minded this thing and that mashable has been talking to Pyongyang Rose based on the evidence provided

da croupier, Friday, 19 December 2014 21:39 (nine years ago) link

maybe nk made a deal after the hack.

languagelessness (mattresslessness), Friday, 19 December 2014 21:46 (nine years ago) link

the narcissism of everyone involved is surely unprecedented.

languagelessness (mattresslessness), Friday, 19 December 2014 21:48 (nine years ago) link

yeah i've had like day-nightmares thinking of the text convos between franco and rogen the past few days

goole, Friday, 19 December 2014 21:48 (nine years ago) link

fwiw, Occam's razor is not a tool for determining whether or not purported facts are true, but for deciding among multiple explanations of known facts, any one of which fully explain them. Even then, it is a probabilistic argument and therefore fallible.

oh no! must be the season of the rich (Aimless), Friday, 19 December 2014 21:58 (nine years ago) link

i wasn't asking anyone to make those texts up fwiw
