two months pass...

yesterday's game had one player at about 12k and the other two were both in the negative, so when it came time for final jeopardy, they ushered the negatives off and it was just one person playing. she won of course, but she got the answer wrong and lost a chunk of change.
first time i ever saw that

one month passes...

current guy on Jeopardy is demolishing and also very very poker type
if he doesn't have the game won by final jeopardy he looks SO uncomfortable.

Premise ridiculous. Who have two potato? (forksclovetofu), Sunday, 19 April 2015 21:21 (nine years ago) link

saw his first win and then went on vacation...happened to be in the hotel room when Jeopardy was on on Friday and was happy to see he was still on but also bummed I missed a whole week of him as he's very fun to watch.

cwkiii, Sunday, 19 April 2015 22:20 (nine years ago) link

he hunts for the daily doubles with serious intent and then either bets everything or just 100
it's a risky strategy but he's got fast buzzer skills and he seems to pull the most absurd answers out of his ass
some of his tics are hysterical: he clearly didn't bring enough shirts and ended up in the second and third game with what looked like fresh out of the package dress shirts that didn't fit him well and were clearly itching him

matt 'the robot' jackson is a beast

karl...arlk...rlka...lkar..., Thursday, 1 October 2015 21:34 (eight years ago) link

I love his efficiency. Notice how he's always racing to get on to the next clue? I hate when Alex (or the contestants, but almost always Alex) manage to dawdle too much with pointless asides and whatnot, often leaving the board uncleared at the end of the round.

The New Gay Sadness (cryptosicko), Thursday, 1 October 2015 21:40 (eight years ago) link

he's certainly not afraid to cut alex off

matt was a near-legendary quiz bowl player in high school and college - more than one friend of mine told me to specifically watch out for him when he started his run last friday

he could get tripped up on a trash-heavy board, but his academics are just ridiculously strong. it's a pleasure to watch him, i hope he goes a long way (not that $166k or whatever is anything to sneeze at)

As observed by Mike Cheyne and others in 2014, the rivalry between Matt Jackson and Matt Bollinger was perhaps the greatest ongoing high-level quizbowl rivalry of all time, the "Magic/Bird, Stone Cold/Rock" pairing of quizbowl.

Stone Cold/Rock lol. One of the greatest "fake" sports rivalries of all time.

One bad call from barely losing to (Alex in SF), Saturday, 3 October 2015 22:40 (eight years ago) link

My friend was on a J! episode that aired last week, she was super impressed (and a little frustrated) with Matt.

Michael F Gill, Tuesday, 6 October 2015 01:41 (eight years ago) link

he is something else alright.
he's been putting away games before the first commercial break.
i'm not sure i've seen anybody play with such swagger, dominance and pure black hat aggressive attitude.

a literal scarecrow on a quaint porch (forksclovetofu), Tuesday, 6 October 2015 02:31 (eight years ago) link

he has, as far as i see, two weaknesses: he's counting on controlling the daily doubles and max prizes by rocketing through categories and, thus far, excellent luck so if he ever misses all of the daily doubles, he might be vulnerable
also his pop culture knowledge is weak and there are these strange gaps... the "shirley temple" guess was particularly wtf. but his knowledge on literature, geography and science are whip sharp and he just gets on these runs where he locks down the lead and you barely even notice how he did it.
on one of the close games, where he had a lead / a competitor nearly at half his total / not much time left, i was surprised that he tactically and clearly intentionally slowed down the game by carefully saying the entire category and dollar figure. that's some advanced, patriots-level winning poor gamesmanship

a literal scarecrow on a quaint porch (forksclovetofu), Tuesday, 6 October 2015 02:36 (eight years ago) link

btw if he wins 11 games, he is holding up both hands and sticking out his tongue gene simmons style
god help us if he wins 12 because his cock is coming out for sure

i want our own multiple jeopardy winning Dr. Casino to weigh in here

i really doubt he knows who gene simmons is

usic ally (k3vin k.), Tuesday, 6 October 2015 02:45 (eight years ago) link

he might not! I still think he'll stick his tongue out.

a literal scarecrow on a quaint porch (forksclovetofu), Tuesday, 6 October 2015 02:49 (eight years ago) link

i only won one episode! and, this is the sad thing, i've barely watched the show since. we don't have TV so my watching has always been a bit infrequent but there was a period after the taping where even thinking about it made me kind of anxious! i think it's fading gradually but it's still there, a bit.

three weeks pass...

i feel like the window to discuss this closed but Matt Jackson's run was one of the more amazing things I've seen on teevee this year.
Such a great player and so wonkily uncharismatic. I really miss watching him, wish he had been on for months.

a llove spat over a llama-keeper (forksclovetofu), Thursday, 29 October 2015 16:48 (eight years ago) link

i found him wonkily charismatic! the way he'd just talk right-the-fuck over Alex was hilarious and ballsy I thought. and his serial killer grin which I like to think he was fully aware of.

fetty wap, kombucha, where is max read (rip van wanko), Thursday, 29 October 2015 16:52 (eight years ago) link

He kind of weirded me out at first but I warmed up to him after the first couple of days when his demeanor became sort of endearing. He was much better than the polo shirt wearing grad student / stand up comedian guy who won a couple of days a few shows after Matt left, I wanted to punch that guy all the time.

joygoat, Thursday, 29 October 2015 16:54 (eight years ago) link

i did quiz bowl in high school and i knew the type and did not get along with them.
his level of gamesmanship was SO HIGH; he knew to stall when he was ahead and rush answers when he was looking for the daily doubles so that he could maintain a pace that felt a little too rushed but clearly fell in his comfort zone.
he got visibly shook if anyone was within 50% of his total and wasn't able to relax to pokerface unless he had the game completely won.
but my god, he was just so dependable on such a wide variety of topics. His literature, geography and science knowledge was pretty flawless.

a llove spat over a llama-keeper (forksclovetofu), Thursday, 29 October 2015 16:55 (eight years ago) link

xp there.
though i didn't like the polo shirt guy either.

a llove spat over a llama-keeper (forksclovetofu), Thursday, 29 October 2015 16:55 (eight years ago) link

jackson was fascinating but he's a total weirdo. i'd say he needs to get laid but i think that would raise some serious consent issues

k3vin k., Thursday, 29 October 2015 17:19 (eight years ago) link

I suspect that my husband had developed a crush on Matt Jackson during his Jeopardy run, which says what about me idk.

Fetty Wap Is Strong In Here (cryptosicko), Thursday, 29 October 2015 17:28 (eight years ago) link

i found jackson v creepy for some reason, not fault of his own i am sure, but for him to lose and be replaced by that gurning dickhead was p horrifying

Roberto Spiralli, Thursday, 29 October 2015 17:29 (eight years ago) link

i had a mancrush on him for sure but i felt like he was negging me

a llove spat over a llama-keeper (forksclovetofu), Thursday, 29 October 2015 17:30 (eight years ago) link

not trying to pick a fight but i would like to gently suggest that referring to a twenty-something mixed-race guy with some clear on-the-spectrum social behavior who is now undeniably among the top five all-time jeopardy champions as a "creepy" "weirdo" who "needs to get laid" runs the risk of sounding offensive

i am pleased that he stopped with the hands thing after he hit ten; the grin was ultimately trademark schtick

a llove spat over a llama-keeper (forksclovetofu), Thursday, 29 October 2015 17:41 (eight years ago) link

ftr my (probably offensive) "consent" crack referred to his lack of capacity to consent, wasn't calling him a rapist. but yeah

k3vin k., Thursday, 29 October 2015 17:47 (eight years ago) link

forks taking the easy moral high ground diagnosing a guy he saw on jeopardy with "clear on-the-spectrum social behavior"

Roberto Spiralli, Thursday, 29 October 2015 17:51 (eight years ago) link

and why "twenty-something mixed-race guy"? what is the relevance. what a bizarre post.

Roberto Spiralli, Thursday, 29 October 2015 17:52 (eight years ago) link

he made a lot of $ but 'undeniably top 5'? prob not

johnny crunch, Thursday, 29 October 2015 18:07 (eight years ago) link

1) - a layman could tell you that his behavior was odd in comparison to past and present players; my gf works daily with autistic kids and adults and suggested most of his actions were keyed in on the spectrum
2) - on the internet, Ken Jennings and Julia Collins are considered brilliant, quirky and engaging; Arthur Chu and Matt Jackson are nerdy and weird. there are very few POC multiday winners on Jeopardy; the show's core fanbase is older and conservative, hence laffs for this nonsense:
http://www.breitbart.com/big-hollywood/2015/10/27/watch-jeopardy-contestants-response-goes-viral-for-comparing-liberals-to-pansies/
Matt discussed his multi-racial background in the q+a portion. if you don't think color matters, gtfo.
3) - In the modern era, Matt is #5 in most games won in a row at thirteen, #4 in most money won at 411k. What metric would you like to go by?

a llove spat over a llama-keeper (forksclovetofu), Thursday, 29 October 2015 18:56 (eight years ago) link

I'm also almost certain that among players with a six or more game win streak that he's #1 in average winnings per game at $31,662.

a llove spat over a llama-keeper (forksclovetofu), Thursday, 29 October 2015 19:02 (eight years ago) link

well u said all-time not modern era tbf

johnny crunch, Thursday, 29 October 2015 19:04 (eight years ago) link

i honestly have no idea about pre-trebek winners; in any case, "modern era" covers over 30 years.

i guess you could argue that Matt hasn't proved anything at tournament of champions yet. i am REALLY looking forward to seeing those games.

a llove spat over a llama-keeper (forksclovetofu), Thursday, 29 October 2015 19:06 (eight years ago) link

yea I mean I don't really care, extreme top of my head hes not above brad rader or Jennings or prob Julia Collins or that lumberjack looking dude w the mustache? prob are a handful more. maybe say he's in the top dozen or something

johnny crunch, Thursday, 29 October 2015 19:10 (eight years ago) link

"if you don't think color matters, gtfo." strong play dude

Roberto Spiralli, Thursday, 29 October 2015 19:11 (eight years ago) link

no idea why you think i'm picking a fight with you about a conversation topic that feels utterly self evident and couldn't have been less aggressively phrased but if it makes you happy

a llove spat over a llama-keeper (forksclovetofu), Thursday, 29 October 2015 19:13 (eight years ago) link

jc: what's your standard for placement there if not average per game, number of games won and total cash winnings? Dude had about the highest margin of victory I've ever seen. Are you going by likeability or something?
