Why is casual racism/sexism more accepted in video games than other forms of media (these days)?

the singer from disturbed is throwing his considerable authority behind gamergate:

.I SUPPORT #GamerGate. PEOPLE/THE MEDIA, ARE TOO DAMN POLITICALLY CORRECT FOR THEIR OWN GOOD. DONT LIKE WHATS IN THE GAME? DONT BUY/PLAY IT

"Please do not contact us again, ever." can this apply to all gamergate-related activity from now on please?

"that you may be unaware of" is cracking me up.

to be fair, the disturbed dude has good reason to think the "don't like it, don't buy it" strategy works. at least when it comes to albums.

inspiring stuff!

have we mentioned itt how the colours on the gg mascot's shirt (and in their logo) are apparently a reference to a 4chan rape joke?

bizarro gazzara, Tuesday, 9 December 2014 16:13 (nine years ago) link

yes

bizarro gazzara, Tuesday, 9 December 2014 16:14 (nine years ago) link

people calling it "a 4chan rape joke" is kinda misleading tbh

what to watch for this afternoon: nick denton has created a board to run gawker rather than doing it solo; gamergaters to take credit.

Interesting. Looks like this was precipitated at least in part by perceived poor performance by editorial director Joel Johnson. I'm not familiar with Mr. Johnson, does anyone know more about him or his work in that position?

[–]HandofBane [score hidden] 6 minutes ago
I think Johnson was the one who wrote that completely off-the-rails article in response to Biddle and Read getting called out about the bullying comments, where the infamous "we have lost thousands of dollars with potential for millions" line came from.

[–]Rocket_McGrain [score hidden] 3 minutes ago
Ah this makes sense as to why he sold him out with personal language.

He's angry at him for admitting defeat, if this is true that is.

If it is, it's great news.

They are firing anyone who speaks the truth.

goole, Wednesday, 10 December 2014 19:28 (nine years ago) link

so bizarre that gg still thinks gawker gives a fuck about anything they do or say. the solipsism is next level

(HOT CHICK FROM BAR 2008) (Will M.), Wednesday, 10 December 2014 19:57 (nine years ago) link

well there's a little something to it. from the memo:

http://www.capitalnewyork.com/article/media/2014/12/8558256/nick-denton-steps-down-gawker-president-names-seven-person-managing-bo

Executive Editor: Tommy Craggs

Tommy inadvertently sparked this whole reshuffle, but not out of any personal ambition. If anything, I feared he wouldn't take a position that a friend had so recently occupied. It’s only because of his sense of obligation to colleagues that he’s accepting the appointment.

What Tommy did was simply to set me thinking, through something he said during a conversation just as Gamergate was subsiding. “I just want to break a fucking story.” Or maybe it was “I just want to fucking break a story.” One of the two.

Anyway, it got me thinking. Yes, that’s exactly it. That editorial freedom we’re so proud of: just do something with it. Something meaningful, more meaningful than a toxic flame war that showed only the internet’s capacity to divide, and none of its capacity to reconcile.

Then I went off the rails, as I do, and asked myself: damn, is Gamergate really our story of the year? You are only as good as your last story, that’s what they would say on Fleet Street. Yes, we do need to break a fucking story, or fucking break a story, whichever it was. And we need to grab hold of our own company narrative, change the conversation in the only way we know how, through sensational scoops and unfettered opinion.

linda cardellini (zachlyon), Thursday, 11 December 2014 14:57 (nine years ago) link

kind of feel like it's a slippery slope between "gamergaters are scum" and "gamers are funny"

which they kind of are, but I know a few people who definitely fit that gamer aesthetic but are really great people? I don't know, it's definitely not my thing

valleys of your mind (mh), Thursday, 11 December 2014 14:58 (nine years ago) link

the line between "I am doing this for fun" and "I literally have no idea how I appear to others" is crossed by these dudes way too much, though

"boys treat me well online" i thought you weren't into white knighting or w/e
"because i'm a girl people won't think i'm a loser shut-in" also probably not true

goole, Friday, 12 December 2014 16:18 (nine years ago) link

for the girls in that video, actually #gg is about taking aim at who they think were the popular kids, or at least more popular than them. the resentment is palpable, as is an absolute absence of empathy for anyone but themselves.

Have seen a couple of Total Biscuit's videos, he comes across as one of those people who has un/consciously developed a Jeremy Clarkson-esque conversational spiel/patter that suggests banter of some kind is occuring, but in fact cloaks only dull commentary on games of Starcraft 2, and sounds like the sort of person you would least want to be cornered into conversation with at the office christmas party.
