Shine is the only song on there that doesn't sound like it belongs on a Quik album.

"Life Jacket" is the only track that's stuck in my head

I like this more than Book of David too, such a fun album front to back.
― Tim F, Wednesday, 3 December 2014 20:48 (nine years ago) link
That's crazy talk imo...
What's the (replayed) sample on "Pet Semetary"? It seems super obvious and on the tip of my tongue, I feel like Just Blaze(?) used the actual sample before

Yeah it's loads better than the Book of David which was totally on it when it hit but had a few mediocre beats and this kind of sourness to some of the tracks. This one is just terrific throughout.
― Matt DC, Friday, 12 December 2014 11:25 (nine years ago) link
oh, even more obvious than I was thinking.
half the fun of Book of David was how it determinedly bounced back and forth from goodtimes party jams (which were WAY WAY BETTER than the ones on this album) to Quik at his most prissy and peevish. The new album is some halfassed autopilot shit.

The new album is some halfassed autopilot shit
Even if that were true, Quik on autopilot is still better than many artists' A-game.
― Matt DC, Saturday, 13 December 2014 10:53 (nine years ago) link
agree with rev, only trax that really stick off this are "life jacket" and "that getter" - none of it's bad as such but it's when you go back to the book of david that you really realise the gulf in quality
― lex pretend, Saturday, 13 December 2014 13:23 (nine years ago) link
man i couldn't agree any less with that assessment -- all the best stuff on the album is the autopilot stuff! when it gets bad is when he tries to do stuff that isn't in wheelhouse and/or lets his son rap

cool to hear him talk a bit about production, Rosecrantz EP sounds great, and come to think of it the sound quality is probably part of what drew me to Quik

is there perhaps some history of quik not getting proper acknowledgement of contributions? his phrasing re "In Da Club" percussion kinda seems like it:
Right. They don't even know why they like that song "In Da Club" by 50 Cent. They just know that they've heard it more than any other song, and it never gets old somehow. Well, it's because I helped Dr. Dre with the drums. I gave him those claps, and that kick. He acknowledges that now. I used to say for years, "You guys don't understand! I gave Dr. Dre those drum sounds!" "Yeah, yeah, okay David." And now when I go into the studio with Dre, he'll tell his people. And I'm like, Dre, that right there is worth more than any advance you could have ever paid me, any royalty or publishing. Acknowledgment like that from you? I'm good.
