the style is ok if and only if they zoom in so far that part of the face must be excluded from the frame. ideally a maximum of 1.5 eyeballs will fit within the frame.

a maxim of beginner's photography, iirc: get so close to the subject that you hit them with the lens, then back off an inch

I know nothing about photography, but it was explained to me that this effect is produced by "lightboxes" which you can in turn see reflected in their eyes, and which in turn produce a kind of cats eye effect that makes everyone look a little bit exotic
