Is E&D better than the karate movie? Cuz that was okay, but nothing special. Really wished they kept the original ending where he killed his wife at the end.

guys you should all see this film, the writer/director is this dude i worked with three years ago on a show, i was there when he got the news from sundance about foot fist way and he is a real good dude, i am happy to see him doing so well. and the yuan bros, who play the yuen bros in the film, are buddies of mine.

i saw this last night. it was awesome. not nearly as fucked up as I was hoping but it was really violent which was good. Jody Hill always puts the BEST music in his stuff, the opening credits have a classic song that was so good to hear and there were tons of other great tunes at very good moments. Danny McBride makes a cameo. Faris was good, Rogen was really fat. All in all a good time at the movies.

crab ringgoon (surfboard dudes get wiped out, totally), Friday, 10 April 2009 18:45 (fifteen years ago) link

oh yeah, there's also the obligatory drug binge montage which was also really fucking awesome (this time it was mixed in with gratuitous ass kicking instead of Kenny Powers' stumbling and mubmling). I think I had my expectation set a little high because this movie was great thinking back on it but I was a tiny bit disappointed

Simon H., Saturday, 11 April 2009 03:10 (fifteen years ago) link

Is the rape scene handled as distastefully as I've read it was? I get that he's supposed to be troubled, and that he preys on Faris in an almost blacked out state, but WTF is up with her wanting it by the time it's over?

Johnny Fever, Saturday, 11 April 2009 03:20 (fifteen years ago) link

SPOILER I GUESS

it was weird... it's barely even a scene - it's about 10 seconds maybe max and he's on top of her thrusting and she's on her back with a little vomit visible on the pillow and he realizes that she's not moving so he stops and she slurs "don't stop, motherfucker" - not sure what i thought of it, i think mostly it tried to further the idea that rogen's character is really fucked up and a huge asshole when he's off his meds - and in general that he's not good w/ girls which is why he fucks a girl who just threw up in front of him and is clearly drugged up - and that farris' character is a huge s lut

J0rdan S., Saturday, 11 April 2009 03:24 (fifteen years ago) link

there were more disturbing parts, i thought

J0rdan S., Saturday, 11 April 2009 03:25 (fifteen years ago) link

Yeah, my main concern was whether or not it plays to her character's behavior pattern or if it was just some sort of thoughtless "all girls really want it" idea Jody Hill was trying to get at (and I'd fully expect a studio to let that kind of thing slide).

Johnny Fever, Saturday, 11 April 2009 03:31 (fifteen years ago) link

yeah i think it was just to set up farris as a huge slut, like even tho she drank a bunch and chewed a bunch of pills and threw up and is not even attracted to rogen's character she just wants to have sex with anything

J0rdan S., Saturday, 11 April 2009 03:35 (fifteen years ago) link

this metacritic blurb otm

Observe and Report is the rare "action-comedy" (almost always a muddled hybrid) that earns its cathartic climax. The blood is real because the psychosis is real. But somehow--the magic of comedy--it's also uproarious.

^^it did not owne hard at all

in fact it is a movie that is gay as FUKK

the whole thing is just an endless string of musical montages, basically it is just the shitbird director forcing u to listen to his ipod while jerkin off in ure eyes

seriously just CUT IT OUT WITH ALL THE FUCKIN SONGS HOW ABOUT A PUNCHLINE U FUCKEN CUMBEARD

the violence was actually well staged and presented tho, it was pretty exhilarating when he savagely beat a bunch of children for instance

btw after this and watchmen (not sure if i should count know1ng since i was expecting a giant shitwich there) i am basically only ever pirating movies from now on

J0rdan S., Sunday, 12 April 2009 05:46 (fifteen years ago) link

I liked it a lot.

have no idea what the story was supposed to be... a lot of comedy dressing but barely any laughs

I imagine the thing that's dividing people is that this is a movie about a deeply fucked-up, unlikeable character first and a comedy way, way second (who the fuck cares about how it was marketed.)

I don't see the point in comparing this too much Eastbound & Down or even the Footfist Way. It's a different vibe. The character isn't just an unlikeable deluded dick, he's dangerous. He's not Kenny Powers, he's Travis Bickle. Even the happy ending feels
wrong and quesy, and I'm pretty sure that's intentional.

The one criticism I really agree with is the musical montage-itis. That Wes Anderson bullshit gets pretty old by the end of the movie.

A Very Powerful Whale Runs To Heaven (latebloomer), Sunday, 12 April 2009 22:06 (fifteen years ago) link

I think if you're going to have a main character that unsympathetic he's gotta be compelling and dude was not at all. I know he's supposed to be travis bickle cuz dudes hit us over the head with it about 100000 times.

s1ocki, Sunday, 12 April 2009 22:09 (fifteen years ago) link

I was hoping to love it and only liked it; the "happy" ending (queasy or not) felt forced and the "real" love interest should not have been there. Also, Patton Oswalt is wasted. Still, I admire Hill's chutzpah.

Simon H., Monday, 13 April 2009 03:41 (fifteen years ago) link

Both psyched and bummed that the trailer uses Patto - The Man, because it's a favorite of mine but also sort of a pet "deep cut" I like to play for people, put on mixes to surprise friends, etc.

excuse me, brutality here? (Hurting 2), Monday, 13 April 2009 03:57 (fifteen years ago) link

I loved the Ronnie character. don't really see him as this Bickle-esque tortured monster. he was not unsympathetic at all!

crab ringgoon (surfboard dudes get wiped out, totally), Monday, 13 April 2009 04:00 (fifteen years ago) link

absolutely loved the soundtrack, but there was definitely an over-reliance on hpstr iPod action going on. one song isn't even over and homie is cutting right to the next.

as for the movie, I definitely didn't hate it, but there parts that were surprisingly draggy for a film so gonzo in so many respects. I thought Rogen did an admirable job, even if I thought some of Ronnie's more unsavory characteristics were a bit of a hard sell for him. the careening tone (e.g. the "real" love interest, redemption, etc.) bothered my girlfriend a lot more than me. umm lol bipolar??

some stuff just really fell flat, like anything involving his mother.

+ there are some non-narrative movies i like just fine, eg anchorman, but this film was meant to have an arc one way or another, so having it so thrown-together didn't work.

perhaps it fell between two stools: either do a 'redemption arc' thing or just have loads of random shit like his buddy getting into heroin.

This movie was like Taxi Driver written and directed by a semi-literate Everybody Loves Raymond fan or something. Honestly I have no idea what to make of it. Just a weird and fairly pointless film.

I just saw this and didn't care for it at all. I wanted to laugh harder at the parts that actually were funny, but even the best scenes had annoying elements (usually music-related... god damn was it overbearing) that kind of made my laughter stick in my throat.

It felt to me like Hill couldn't decide if he wanted to make a comedy or a pointless Taxi Driver knock-off. It came out like Punch Drunk Love 2. After this movie, I think I have decided that Hill is a juvenile hack who is really lucky to be surrounded by talented people.

the word "juvenile" came to mind strictly because of how he writes female characters. they are either helpless and innocent with hearts of gold, shallow sluts, or shrews. none of them ever have big parts - they are just there as an end-zone mechanism for the fat anti-hero.

well, i wouldn't recommend this particular movie to anyone... but in general i doubt there would be much for her to enjoy in any of Hill's stuff. possibly Eastbound & Down if she could stick it through to the last few episodes. we have watched and enjoyed some manchild-with-crush-on-one-dimensional-female comedies together in the past, but Hill's stuff is mean enough in other aspects that i doubt she would enjoy.

i chose the word "subject", because she wasn't interested in the first place, so i would have had to talk her into it.

after seeing all of Eastbound and Down, it feels like this part must have been written for Danny McBride, right...? Feel like it would have been an immensely better film with him in the lead.

I think about this movie at least a couple times a year, it's due a proper re-evaluation (even if the infamous sex scene is awful + not funny and it would have been better with McBride in the lead)
