short version: people acting like mini-Limbaughs, crowing about gamergate and whatever else, are accepting donations via patreon and monetizing their ranting, making others want to do the same.
because it's a crazy small world, one of the founders of Patreon is that dude from ILM favorite, Pomplamoose

in other recent pamplemouse news they grossed over 100k on a month long tour and ended up in the red then documented their expenses on order to educate us or something https://medium.com/@jackconte/pomplamoose-2014-tour-profits-67435851ba37

yeah, the best part of that pomplamoose tour is the part where they complain about their losses and don't mention that touring is not anywhere near how they make money

[–]Tafts_Bathtub [score hidden] 17 hours ago Let me make this clear before I start: I do not condone this person's actions and think it is an extremely irresponsible thing to do.Now, let me say this: we can't stop people from doing this. People will always have the capacity to do terrible things to people who have internet notoriety. For instance Scooby1961. Scooby was well known on 4chan as a nice guy who gave good bodybuilding advice...

worth quoting with edits:
Arthur Chu @arthur_affectMan they are antithetical to the culture of Twitter - the whole "Justify why you said this""Why would you mention your sick dog except as some kind of rhetorical trick"A channer wrote a defense of chan culture saying universal anonhood changes how you thinkWhen you're used to ID-less spaces any ID-building activity seems "narcissistic"A lot of it is intentionally being horrible but they legit don't get normal socialization. He said this as though this were a plus of chan culture rather than a horrifying sicknessI say things on Twitter bc I want ppl to get a sense of who I am & how I think4chan thinks that kind of thing is "attention whoring" & "preening" bc they are brokenBeing likable so you will be liked - they think that's fundamentally dishonestThey ideologically believe in the absence of all accountability you are who you "really" areThis is nonsense. It's the opposite - 4chan ppl become interchangeable id monsters

seems like a not uncommon line of misanthropic teen angst thinking, that behavior in any way motivated by seeking to be liked by others is being fake or a phony

I definitely had a bit of that kind of thinking in school, but I think it might have to do with being in a class where some of the people on top of the social ladder were kinda unlikable bullies. When I started in highschool I met some extremely handsome, smart and popular people, and they were the nicest people I'd ever met. Made me reconsider. And most of those bullies got smarter and nicer later on as well, I should probably say.
― Frederik B, Wednesday, 3 December 2014 01:58 (nine years ago) link
I think it helps to be really white-people normative. Then when you realize you think you're shit and know society still hands you all these privileges, and that some people work hard to get what you've been handed, you want to lash out at them for making you feel bad about wasting your privilege.
― valleys of your mind (mh), Wednesday, 3 December 2014 02:01 (nine years ago) link
Also, a thing with bullying is those kinds of people who would be more than happy to play with the bullied, and would show no sign of disliking them, but then if bullies come around would turn their backs on them. Social pressure and all that. I can see how victims of bullying would be pretty angry at that drive to be liked.
