i was in the mood to listen to New Order this Thanksgiving Eve, so instead of playing one of their CD's i'm going to play ILM's Top list.

I played Republic last night. Really want to know what happened to Peter Hook on that album. There are a few tracks where his bass shows up but it's definitely missing in action. Incidentally, I really like Republic so I'm not too bothered by Hooky not appearing on the next album.
― brotherlovesdub, Friday, 29 May 2015 18:09 (eight years ago) link
The tracks on which you can hear Hook: Regret, Spooky, Everyone Everywhere, Young Offender.
― The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 29 May 2015 18:59 (eight years ago) link
Republic is the only album of theirs not to appear on Spotify.
― brotherlovesdub, Friday, 29 May 2015 19:54 (eight years ago) link
Here it's those expanded reissues and Substance that are now missing from Spotify. So no "Cries and Whispers" or "Lonesome Tonight" etc, but Republic's here. Surely a cue to check whether the deep cuts can finally make more of an impression...
― Maximum big surprise! (Nag! Nag! Nag!), Friday, 29 May 2015 22:21 (eight years ago) link
Hook is more evident than I recalled in the very "deeps cuts" I had in mind. "Chemical", "Special", etc. Rarely at the front of the mix though, of course.
― Maximum big surprise! (Nag! Nag! Nag!), Friday, 29 May 2015 22:54 (eight years ago) link
"Special," yes, can't believe I missed it -- he's all over the intro. I just remembered a solo in "Times Change" too.
― The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Saturday, 30 May 2015 00:34 (eight years ago) link
think it was just down to tensions between Hook and Sumner being at their worst - I think I read an interview where Hook said Sumner had decided to use his bass line's melody for the lead vocal melody on World and they fought over that which eventually lead to the bass track being removed or something
― ufo, Saturday, 30 May 2015 01:09 (eight years ago) link
would love to read that interview.
― The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Saturday, 30 May 2015 01:10 (eight years ago) link
I haven't managed to dig up the one I'm thinking of but he talks about how fractured the recording process for Republic was here.
― ufo, Saturday, 30 May 2015 02:11 (eight years ago) link
His word against everyone else's, I guess:
RCM: Was Gillian [Gilbert, New Order keyboardist] involved at that point?
PH: No, I’m afraid to say that Gillian doesn’t have a lot to do with the music. Gillian used to help, but she was never a huge part of the writing. The writing was always done by the 3 of us. Bernard did most of the keyboards.- See more at: http://www.rockcellarmagazine.com/2013/03/04/peter-hook-interview-joy-division-new-order/#sthash.6w0Wqoc8.dpuf

I don't buy his comments about collaborating on Sumner with lyrics, especially remembering how his words for that Electronic album are very much of a piece w/what he was writing for NO.

when i said i was a virgin that meant that this was the first poll that i ran. the other thing was gone a long time ago, just to be clear.

lol, can i erase that last post please. got high tonight...

Noticed last night that Times Change sounds like a follow up to Get The Message w/ the opening talk/rap section.
― brotherlovesdub, Saturday, 30 May 2015 14:36 (eight years ago) link
and the "Some Distant Memory" oboe!
― The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Saturday, 30 May 2015 15:01 (eight years ago) link
Yeah, I was thinking last night about how good it would be to resurrect that one for their live shows but use the melodica to play the oboe part.
― brotherlovesdub, Saturday, 30 May 2015 15:51 (eight years ago) link
Think i started a thread on a Time Change somewhere. Always loved that dusky vibe. That one and Some Distant Memory really take me back to my senior year in high school.
― licorice oratorio (baaderonixx), Saturday, 30 May 2015 17:43 (eight years ago) link
A friend of mine took a synth programming course in college, and fwiw, he told me that apparently the oboe is one of the easiest sounds to come up with.
― Josh in Chicago, Saturday, 30 May 2015 19:00 (eight years ago) link
It's a live oboe, according to the credits.

i was a poll virgin when i ran this poll. yes, this was my very first poll i did for ILM. this was also the first ILM artist collaborated poll where i asked for help with the images. i still think Millsner, who i don't even think post here anymore, did one of the best job on any ILM poll. cannot ever thank him enough for helping.

anyways the reason for this bump. we never made a Spotify playlist so here it is for the first time:
ILM New Order

missing from Spotify because they don't have CD2 from the collector edition are:
Lonesome TonightHurtIn A Lonely PlaceCries and WhispersMesh
so it is actually a Top 45 instead of 50.
― Bee OK, Thursday, 17 August 2017 01:22 (six years ago) link
I still check in almost every day! Thanks for the bump and the playlist.
The poll was a joy from start to finish, and I felt privileged to help out. It's obvious that New Order are a special band for many ILXors, so I hope that our love for these songs, the legacy of the group, and their constellation of collaborators still shows through.

nice to see you are still around Millsner!
had a blast listening to this playlist today.

One of these playlists has the stupid pump panel mix of Confusion on there which renders a 'best of new order' playlist completely useless. I added both but don't know which one I shuffled this morning, but it was foul. I can deal with the Perfecto mix of World and the Hardfloor mix of Blue Monday, but the Confusion remix was a step too far. Surely nobody voted for that.
― brotherlovesdub, Friday, 18 August 2017 16:23 (six years ago) link
Well what do you know. I didn't have Spotify back in the day and when I scanned this thread I didn't see it.

are people familiar with the Pump Panel Reconstruction Mix used in the first club scene in "Blade"? because that owns(also for whatever reason the "Confusion" 12 " mix on Spotify won't play for me)― they are either militarists (ugh) or kangaroos (?) The worst New Order single.
― morning wood truancy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 5 January 2018 02:17 (six years ago) link
Maybe the worst up to that point, as you say, but looking at the 2CD "Singles" comp, I can find at least nine I like less.
― Hans Holbein (Chinchilla Volapük), Friday, 5 January 2018 03:21 (six years ago) link
I'd say Jetstream is quite comfortably their worst single overall.

I believe they wrote State of the Nation in a day (or unusually quick) for Pretty In Pink. I don't mind it, but I couldn't defend it outside of personal preference. It's not better than Shellshock, but I really like the intro until Bernard vomits up that horrible lyric. The backing vocal on the chorus is pointless. Despite all the bad, I still like it. State of the Nation is my least favorite 1986 sleeve. Shellshock is my favorite, then BLT.
― brotherlovesdub, Friday, 5 January 2018 04:54 (six years ago) link
"shellshock" was the pretty in pink track.

Yeah, you're right, I thought I had read something in Substance about State being done around the same time but I just flipped through the mentions in Substance and there's nothing there.

Hooky's bassline in this early live version of State of The Nation from 1985 is pretty good. I think it's one of his weakest basslines, which could be what drags the song down.
The whole Leuven show is enjoyable.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CLZ53BmgD5A&t=1474s

Our soaraway number 2 right here in new unseen footage from Manchester’s Student Union on February 6 1981. Messy but as a comment cheeringly points out 'New Order's sloppy mess sounds better than most bands' A game'.

Not much to disagree with, except with the record-buying public of the UK. How could they not have sent three of the best (in fact, three of my four favourite New Order singles - "Perfect Kiss", "Bizarre Love Triangle" and "Run") into the Top 40?
