One of the apartments they showed us required walking on an outdoor balcony to get to - it was the weirdest shit, never seen anything like it.

I've been in a Mitchell-Lama building in Manhattan like this. The elevators to each floor are in a heated interior space but then you go through a door onto an exterior balcony! Seemed un-Northeastern but interesting.

A year and a half ago we lived in a 1BR that was almost 1000 square feet, renovated kitchen, terrace, nice hardwood floors etc and we paid $1850/month -- and we later found out that the building was a little on the expensive side bc it was one of the only ones allowing dogs. Right across the street from Parker Towers.

if you search for parker towers on google maps it comes up labeled as new york apartments constantly breaking.

I mean it's like a universally reviled building, the NYTimes RE section is such a joke.

But it's the only rental in the neighborhood I know of with its own fancy leasing office. It's kind of hilarious, the leasing office is like WAY nicer than the buildings/apartments themselves.

I read that article. Actually my mother sent it to me. Along with an article from a year ago about Woodside that I'd already read. Me an anyone I know who might be looking for housing is not the demographic for that article. People for whom 2600 for a 1 bedroom is a steal compared to Manhattan or Brooklyn do not get my sympathy or deserve my clicks and eyeballs. There's some relatively affordable housing in parts of Queens (emphasis on relatively) but also parts of Brooklyn and Manhattan but it's only a trend piece if the building has a new treadmill in it or something.

Maybe. Assuming you need decent subway access to Manhattan, I'd try Rego Park, Sunnyside, Flushing, Elmhurst, maybe Maspeth/Middle Village, Kew Gardens. I think Corona is a really interesting neighborhood too although you'd be like the only person who's not either hispanic or old italian holdout, afaict. But great food, access to Flushing Meadows/Corona Park -- you're a mets fan too arent you? The Queens Museum is a neat little contemporary art museum too. And probably reasonable rentwise.

You might find that in Forest Hills though. Especially if you can find a rent-stabilized building.

For some reason the craigslist listings are cheaper than the trulia listings -- don't know if that means they're fake or it's just a different market. But I did always assume Trulia is aimed at yuppies and students and may not capture the whole market.

If I manage to retain my job, my office will be in the Battery soon. Flushing <----> southern tip of Manhattan twice daily is NAGL.

You pretty much need an E or 7 express stop (to the 456) to make that a bearable commute I think.

Morbs, my bf lives in Ridgewood/Glenndale, off the Fresh Pond Road M stop. It's not a great train on the weekends but you can get it to downtown by a quick xfer to the J for your commute, and his giant 1-BR is only like $1300. I think he moved in about 2 yrs ago? Think there are still p good deals (thought he did use a broker).

There's plenty of food and stores and stuff, it's pretty nice actually.

and if you live in Ridgewood you can pretend like you're still in Brooklyn.

I take the M to work every day...it's mostly empty, almost never crowded. It's totally weird commuting home from flatiron to queens at 6:30 and getting on an almost empty train.

The M is a great place to curl up with a book. I take it some days even though it's a slightly longer ride.

Which article/place? I know there's 1 or 2 tibetan places in Sunnyside but generally they haven't been as well regarded as the many in Woodside and Jackson Heights.
