Can't wait to replay in first person on PC in Jan. I guess this means I'll be paying full retail again those bastards

calstars, Tuesday, 4 November 2014 20:00 (nine years ago) link

idk 1st person gta reflexively sounds awful. just me?

Roberto Spiralli, Tuesday, 4 November 2014 20:09 (nine years ago) link

Absolutely. But I think 3rd person GTA is borderline awful, so take it with a grain of salt.

I wouldn't want to spend the majority of the game in first person (obviously, since so much of the pleasure in the game is in observing your character in the environment), I can see where it'd come in real handy here and there. I always find the shooting isn't quite precise enough when you're driving, for example (to shoot drivers, shoot out tires, hit just the right spot with the sticky bomb so you can detonate it next to the guy pursuing you).

antexit, Tuesday, 4 November 2014 20:23 (nine years ago) link

I think it would be great driving, as I believe gta always needed a proper dashboard camera. Considering it's basis lies in being a driving game, it's pretty criminal it doesn't have one already. I guess with all the different vehicles it's perhaps a lot to ask on smaller systems.

first person view on foot, could be useful in combat situations I guess.

It's just not gta though is it. Slowly this game is gradually becoming all other modern games. bah.

if this works with oculus rift it could be really cool

not that i have a pc capable of playing it

or an oculus rift

but y'know it's the principle of the thing

bizarro gazzara, Wednesday, 5 November 2014 10:47 (nine years ago) link

i often use 'first person' when driving, have always preferred that.

Next Gen GTA 5 out tomorrow. I already have it on PS3 and wasn't going to bother, but apparently Target stores in the US (with a mobile department) are offering a $30 off coupon towards a Xbone/PS4 copy of GTA 5 if you trade in your 360/PS3 copy. Think the deal runs for a week.

...made GTA V the best game in the series to date

Drop soap, not bombs (Ste), Monday, 17 November 2014 22:40 (nine years ago) link

Kotaku was raving about it too:

Basically, everything smutty and shocking and moral-panic-inducing about GTA is significantly intensified in first-person. The harrowing gunfights are more harrowing, the wild car chases are wilder, the shocking massacres are more shocking, and the tasteless sex exploitation is even tasteless-er. But then, the beautiful sunsets are even more beautiful, and the thrilling stunts and extreme-sports activities are even more thrilling and extreme. The game contains multitudes, as always, and now those multitudes have been multiplied.

I just want a Hi Def remake of San Andreas. No changes to story, characters, vehicles, etc. Is that too much to ask?

Oh and no Zero missions.

otm. San Andreas is still the king of GTA imo. Granted I've only played 5 for a few hours...

damn, no pc version til next year. can imagine this being great using keyboard + mouse. ended up hating gta5.0 because of shitty writing and sluggish movements of main character. this should sort the latter anyroad

Watched Drive the other day, and that introduction heist driving sequence really made me remember how I wanted the GTA series to develop. More intelligence in how you avoid police etc, instead of just more on foot running shooting blah blah.

Drop soap, not bombs (Ste), Tuesday, 18 November 2014 12:42 (nine years ago) link

there were some drive-inspired driving features in watch dogs - you could give police the slip by turning down alleyways and turning off your engine.

bizarro gazzara, Tuesday, 18 November 2014 12:46 (nine years ago) link

I eluded the cops plenty of times by driving into a garage.

I mean, ok, it was the fourth dimension wall glitch of a garage that violated the rules of time and space, but hey, they could never figure out where I was.

pplains, Tuesday, 18 November 2014 14:31 (nine years ago) link

make sure you set your power save settings to more than one hour before installing this file

polyphonic, Wednesday, 19 November 2014 04:57 (nine years ago) link

The first-person mode is a cool bauble but not a realistic way to play the game.

There are a few things here and there that seem different but otherwise it's the same game so far. I'm not noticing any big improvements in the graphics. Maybe the ocean looks a bit better. Obviously it's very stable and plays well compared to the 360.

The biggest change so far has been the online player creator, which is a little more refined, and the character models look better.

If you get a phone call, the sound (e.g. the phone ring, Lamar's voice), will come through your controller instead of the tv. I turned that shit off real fast. If you're being chased by the cops your controller will flash blue and red. It's cool in theory but gets old super fast.

It took me like three hours to install the file fwiw

polyphonic, Wednesday, 19 November 2014 19:28 (nine years ago) link

3 hours???

calstars, Wednesday, 19 November 2014 19:52 (nine years ago) link

4 if you include the first attempt that failed when my system powered down

Took me like 30 minutes max to install the game (on PS4). What could the difference possibly be between PS4 and Xbone to cause such a disparity? Does PS4 need fewer assets to be loaded on? Is the drive faster? Weird.

I think FP mode is pretty rad. I don't know if I'll play the whole campaign with it turned on but it really, really changes the feel to me. The little details really come out (punching a guy and seeing his glasses fly off, for example, made me lol). Seeing the city from this new perspective makes it totally unfamiliar and makes me want to replay the whole game fresh. You notice a ton of detail in a way that seems very new. (Were there always food trucks in this game? Were the newspapers you see blowing around always printed with headlines pertinent to where you are in the narrative?)

And, I noticed right away, killing non-aggressive NPCs feels VERY VERY WRONG AND HORRIBLE. It makes that "murder simulator" epithet politicians have been using about GTA for 10+ years actually seem appropriate.

On the downside, when you're used to how detailed character models are in FPSes these days, seeing GTAV from that perspective makes it kind of look like ass. Which sort of defeats the purpose of getting it for on next-gen.

I haven't tried online yet but BIG BIG OTHER BONUS which is practically worth what it costs to trade up the disc in my book is the hundreds of new songs on the radio. The funk station is much better, there are a bunch of awesome new songs on West Coast Classics (I heard "Afro Puffs," "I Got 5 on It," and a Spice-1 track last night), and the adult-contemporary station is now more like a 70s and 80s oldies station but has a ton of great new songs (am I crazy or was "Danger Zone" not on the soundtrack until now?). I would easily have spent $20 or so just to get a radio re-up like this as DLC on the last-gen version. Country station still sucks and continues to sound like it's programmed by someone plugging the phrase "outlaw country" into the allmusic search engine.

i dunno but as a ps4 owner who recently got an xbone as well i've been dismayed by how long games take to install on it. it took literally all night to install forza horizon 2 from disc.

bizarro gazzara, Thursday, 20 November 2014 14:12 (nine years ago) link

I'm PS4. No idea why it took me so much longer.

polyphonic, Thursday, 20 November 2014 16:31 (nine years ago) link

Maybe because I did digital download?

polyphonic, Thursday, 20 November 2014 19:25 (nine years ago) link

Download plus install would explain it

calstars, Thursday, 20 November 2014 20:36 (nine years ago) link

I completely downloaded it before I started the install though.

polyphonic, Thursday, 20 November 2014 20:39 (nine years ago) link

So I double dipped on this and don't regret it. Shit is SLICK on PS4. 1st person isn't as easy to play in, you really need the extra peripheral vision, but it's still well implemented. I use it mostly to just wonder around and look at stuff. The amount of detail in this game is super impressive.

kind of a casualty of forza honestly, which got me addicted pretty badly, then i hit a wall and kind of hated gaming in general and got rid of everything

I'm playing through the story again. A lot of the stuff they added to the 360 version was added (e.g., flight school) after I completed the story, so it's neat to see it folded into the game this time around. The early flight challenges are really tough.

how lame would it be to re-play IV at this point?

Not lame, been thinking of doing that myself. Also want to replay San Andreas but that's a mighty ask.
