Northtown EP is so good

boxedjoy, Wednesday, 29 October 2014 09:47 (nine years ago) link

new song is good & v welcome bc I've caned his stuff & evangelized. I find his unslick twitter endearing

ogmor, Wednesday, 29 October 2014 13:44 (nine years ago) link

I feel like his stuff has The Reverend written all over it. I've tried to get him into Shamir a few times but idk if it's clicked yet.

Belami Young (Stevie D(eux)), Wednesday, 29 October 2014 14:46 (nine years ago) link

i love this kid & everything i've heard from him.

festival culture (Jordan), Wednesday, 29 October 2014 15:01 (nine years ago) link

low key, i was lucky enough to find his soundcloud awhile back and asked him to sing on something of mine, and he actually did. not sure what's going to happen with that exactly but he's just so genuine & generous with his talent.

festival culture (Jordan), Wednesday, 29 October 2014 15:09 (nine years ago) link

i like this song but it's a bit suffocating tune-yards cutesy

i think the bridge is the best part, he really just goes for it

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 29 October 2014 16:13 (nine years ago) link

he is nothing if not endearing, I mean ffs

Belami Young (Stevie D(eux)), Wednesday, 29 October 2014 16:25 (nine years ago) link

is it faux naif though

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 29 October 2014 16:29 (nine years ago) link

i'm being a bit harsh, i recognize -- he's obv very very talented

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 29 October 2014 16:29 (nine years ago) link

i don't think it's faux anything.

festival culture (Jordan), Wednesday, 29 October 2014 16:43 (nine years ago) link

also, gotta give it up, nick sylvester's production sounds really good.

festival culture (Jordan), Wednesday, 29 October 2014 16:45 (nine years ago) link

yeah I really do not think it is faux naif

Belami Young (Stevie D(eux)), Wednesday, 29 October 2014 17:06 (nine years ago) link

God, any time I hear NS I think shitty journalistic ethics but also that astoundingly awful review he wrote for "Piracy Funds Terrorism" on p4k that starts out with:

Santa Claus, the Virgin Mary, and Terrence "Turkeytime" Terrence just got the shaft this holiday season. Why bother with presents? 2005's Tickle Me Elmo was supposed to be a chicken-legged Sri Lankan with so much sex in her self-spun neons you might as well get wasted off penicillin with Willie Nelson at a secret Rex the Dog show.

Belami Young (Stevie D(eux)), Wednesday, 29 October 2014 17:08 (nine years ago) link

idek if that's irony or post-irony or satire or post-satire or trying too hard or anything but no matter what that is just bad bad baaaad

Belami Young (Stevie D(eux)), Wednesday, 29 October 2014 17:09 (nine years ago) link

does he play on this song

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 29 October 2014 17:13 (nine years ago) link

pretty sure he produced it i.e. made the instrumental...he did the EP for sure, and this sounds the same to me.

so he is saying 'had an Epiphone, Tonka, Fisher-Price' in 'On the Regular', right? he is saying that because (as he says in the line before) he's loved and played music since he was very young, so there was a guitar in the mix with these other toys. feel like most people posting the video are misinterpreting this line and saying shit 'lol he's talking about toys. so random. fisher-price phone? what?'

The new album is mostly quite fun.

Tay-Tay Brooklynpants (Murgatroid), Friday, 8 May 2015 06:08 (eight years ago) link

good news. what are the parts like that aren't fun?

the late great, Friday, 8 May 2015 06:31 (eight years ago) link

So, the album is... just fine, imo :-/

WE WANT FET WAP (Stevie D(eux)), Friday, 15 May 2015 18:10 (eight years ago) link

way, way too many recycled sounds and structures and motifs; so many parts of songs sounds almost exactly like parts of other songs

sounds really 2005 to me

soyrev, Wednesday, 20 May 2015 08:47 (eight years ago) link

went to see him last night with relatively low expectations but he put on a good show, surprisingly rousing material, full backing band & he came into the audience at the end to hug ppl. he's a charmer

ogmor, Wednesday, 20 May 2015 09:04 (eight years ago) link

i know what you're talking about stevie, but i guess it doesn't bother me. there are maybe three tracks i skip but the rest are jams.

the album is growing on me, surprising there aren't more mentions of it on ILM tbh.

lil urbane (Jordan), Friday, 12 June 2015 13:45 (eight years ago) link

It's just OK. The beats are weak imo.

I don't dislike it though.

The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 12 June 2015 13:46 (eight years ago) link

yeah i'd be interested in hearing him over production that doesn't sound like 2003 DFA

J0rdan S., Friday, 12 June 2015 14:06 (eight years ago) link

genuinely curious what sort of production you think would be more suitable?

lil urbane (Jordan), Friday, 12 June 2015 14:43 (eight years ago) link

Wouldn't have minded Holy Ghost! backing him.

this is what i thought too, like something dredged up from a forgotten myspace. not in a good way. mostly in an annoying but also uninvolving way.

"Trap Queen" and Drake

I Am Curious (Dolezal) (DJP), Friday, 12 June 2015 17:03 (eight years ago) link

really couldn't believe how ordinary the songs were on this. reminded me of the Aeroplane album. just nothing-y.

Live, he covered Joyce Manor, Christmas Card. Fun stuff.

Van Horn Street, Monday, 15 June 2015 04:06 (eight years ago) link

yeah my first thought when I heard Shamir was will this bad 2007 blog house aesthetic ever go away?

The Reverend, Monday, 15 June 2015 04:14 (eight years ago) link

Seeing him next weekend for free. I enjoyed the one song, but that's all I've heard.

Greer, Monday, 15 June 2015 08:01 (eight years ago) link

"Head In The Clouds" is amazing I don't know why it's tucked away at the end there.

I get if you're cool on the rest of the album but yeah "Head In The Clouds" <3

Yeh the album is mega-disappointing. Shame.

ineloquentwow (Craigo Boingo), Tuesday, 16 June 2015 21:15 (eight years ago) link

Went to their show at the U Street Music Hall tonight. I was meh on most of the songs, but his energy was good and Head in The Clouds is a total stormer.

Shamir doing a Blake Babies cover is not something I ever expected to happen in my lifetime

boxedjoy, Tuesday, 18 April 2017 15:16 (seven years ago) link

I mean it's a pretty rubbish cover but even so

boxedjoy, Tuesday, 18 April 2017 15:18 (seven years ago) link

I got about halfway through this before deciding that I appreciated the sentiment more than I enjoyed listening to it.

Rachel Luther Queen (DJP), Tuesday, 18 April 2017 15:27 (seven years ago) link

Fluffy Saint-Bernard (Stevie D(eux)), Tuesday, 18 April 2017 22:43 (seven years ago) link

they definitely will review it

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 18 April 2017 23:03 (seven years ago) link

And they reviewed the album the other day.

Saw this line in an interview: A lot of the producers I was working with felt stuck to making Ratchet 2 or Ratchet Deluxe, which is not what I wanted.

And having helped out on some demos awhile back, I can say I was definitely feeling that.

change display name (Jordan), Friday, 21 April 2017 16:20 (six years ago) link

the review seems kinda unfair

Shamir is not the first artist to fall prey to the trappings of lo-fi—like all “less-is-more” creative strategies, it's deceptively difficult to perfect

but also

If pop music demands perfection and following a regiment of rules, Hope runs screaming away from all of that

Must you.

Today, Shamir has announced his new album, Revelations, with a video for the song "90's Kids." The video for the millennial anthem fittingly features Shamir recreating iconic memes.

I give him tons of props for rejecting the path that was laid out for him and putting out exactly what he wants, and it's obviously very important to him to go back to DIY in terms of honesty/artifice/presentation.

Is there any precedent for an artist putting out a lo-fi, home-recorded album to follow up a very polished & produced debut?
