Unlike other English speaking countries, the U.S. doesn't throw around the word "toilet" as much as the other ones do.
Never really noticed it until I saw a sign in the Sydney airport that said TOILET with a big arrow. My delicate sensitivities would've preferred "rest room".

If you ask for the bathroom in Germany you get shown the room with the bath in it. You have to specifically ask for the toilet (presumably with more detail the better)

I assume the German word for what I'd call a "rest room" translates loosely to roomofhousewithtoiletnonotthebathroomdoyouwashinthetoiletcaniwatch.
