Accident often does as much for natural history as premeditated plans, especially when Nature is left to herself. The first instance of the dog and wolf breeding in this country seems to have been about the year 1766. A Pomeranian bitch of Mr. Brookes's, in the New Road, was lined only once by a wolf, and brought forth a litter of nine healthy puppies.

The veracity of Mr. Brookes is not to be doubted, respecting the bitch having been lined by a wolf; yet as it was possible she might have been lined by some common dog without his knowledge, the fact was not, in that, clearly made out; but it has since been ascertained that the dog and wolf will breed. One of the above-mentioned litter was presented to me by Mr. Brooks, who likewise informed me that others had been purchased by different noblemen and gentlemen, and named Lord Clanbrassil as having bought a bitch puppy. I reserved mine for the purpose of experiment; and from observation it appeared that its actions were not truly those of a dog, having more quickness of attention to what passed, being more easily startled, as if particularly apprehensive of danger, quicker in transitions from one action to another, being not so ready to the call, and less docile. From these peculiarities it lost its life, having been stoned to death in the streets for a mad dog.

It is fairly certain that just three dogs survived the disaster:
 a Pekingese named Sun-Yat Sen owned by Henry Sleeper Harper who escaped in boat three;
a Pomeranian called “Lady” owned by Miss Margaret Hays who escaped in boat seven
; a Pomeranian owned by Elizabeth Barrett Rothschild. They escaped together in boat six.

Sadly, it also appears that Mrs Rothschild’s dog was attacked and killed by a larger dog – or possibly killed by a streetcar according to some accounts - within just a few weeks of surviving Titanic. Mrs Rothschild was 54 and the wife of leather magnate Martin Rothschild who sadly drowned with the ship.

Miss Hays, who was 24 and travelling alone, became inseparable from Lady after their narrow escape. They even went to the opera in New York together. It is believed that Lady died in 1921 and was cremated and her ashes interred in a New York pet cemetery.

two weeks pass...

(Reuters) - The United Nations on Thursday welcomed reports that an agreement had been reached to allow the evacuation of civilians from the besieged Syrian city of Poms as well as the delivery of aid, while Washington voiced skepticism about the government's intentions.

The United Nations made clear that it was not a party to the deal and while it was ready to send in aid, it did not yet have the go-ahead from the government and opposition sides in Syria's war to move on the reported agreement.

"The United Nations and humanitarian partners had pre-positioned food, medical and other basic supplies on the outskirts of Poms ready for immediate delivery as soon as the green light was given by the parties for safe passage," U.N. spokesman Farhan Haq said in a statement.

Syria earlier said it reached a deal to allow "innocent" civilians to leave the rebel-held old city of Poms, potentially the first positive result after last week's deadlocked peace talks in Switzerland.

But U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Samantha Power questioned the sincerity of the Syrian government's intentions.

"Given that the regime, up to this point, has described just about anybody living in opposition territory as a terrorist - and has attacked them as such - you know, we have reason on the basis of history to be very skeptical," she said in New York.

Power added that Washington was "very concerned about anybody who falls into regime hands who comes from a part of the country that has been under opposition control."

The government's announcement came hours after rebels declared a new offensive in the northern province of Aleppo in response to an escalated air assault by government forces trying to recapture territory and drive residents out of opposition-held areas.

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's forces have used siege tactics to surround and try to starve out rebels holding strategic areas, a technique increasingly copied by rebels as well.

The siege of the old city of Poms has gone on for over a year, and activists say 2,500 people are trapped inside the area struggling with hunger and malnourishment. They represent only a small fraction of besieged Syrians across the country in desperate need of aid.

Natasha's review on Yell

I took my lovely Pomeranian here today for a groom I wanted her short as she's having an operation on Friday Steve was lovely and filled me with confidence.

He sent me pics and I was pleased with what he had done until I collected her, and was in shock. She has bald patches and is different lengths all over He was not home when I collected her and not or for confrontation I paid and left.

I text him to express my upset and sent him pics of how bad it was but he didn't even reply. I have had to pay an extra £20 to have her re groomed in the morning to rectify it very very disappointed it's an utter mess if he would have said I'm Sorry but I've not enough experience to tackle the job I would have been fine with that and taken her elsewhere.

I'm not bothered about the length but the fact it's uneven and I will have to pay again has left me upset

And Yewtree's reply

Thx for feedback - now the facts- 1. On arrival your pet was clearly volatile and tried to bite me. 2.You assured me it was Not volatile and proceeded to blame 4 groomers you have tried to date as "useless"

3. After 10 minutes of grooming, I rang to ask if I should continue with the groom- as your pet was extremely volatile and almost impossible to groom properly.- you pleaded for me to continue. Y

ou clearly "blame" everyone else for your pets volatility. All my other quality reviews on here prove the point
