Why is casual racism/sexism more accepted in video games than other forms of media (these days)?

@Sargon_of_Akkad Don't forget they would also see this as sexism. "You can't buy a womans love"-type of shit. You can't win.

otm

Flipped through my roommate's GameInformer and found a pleasant, to-the-point Sarkeesian interview. Wonder if this is raising hackles or if the GG types have already long since checked out on GameInformer.

one of the really interesting things to me about #gamergate as a sociological phenomenon is how persistent and totemic certain phrases become - like obv its not a new debate tactic to dismiss opposing viewpoints as incorrect but things are always 'fallacies' or not 'critical thinking'. i mean i think the idea that these horrible trashslobs are the only people who see things as they really are is an entrenched part of the trunet mindset (lol normalshits) is p fascinating but not unique but the codified way they have expressing things is super interesting

ive been p fascinated with trunet communities since before #gamergate and i keep seeing glimpses of that mindset in #gamergate like there was a tweet by the one fedora dude that makes tentacle rape games about 'lames on the internet' but there are a lot (well not that many) dudes out there that truly believe that the dod developed arpanet as a safeplace for them to trade nudes of the girl in a cowboy hat from digimon. and people talking about facebook.com being 'cultural appropriation' - that having ceded 'rl' to the normals they 'deserve' the internet to themselves. and that even more than ethics in game journalism or having sjw values forced on them the very existence of 'candy crush saga' is an existential threat

this is kind of stupid but i remember being a kid and reading tad williams 'otherland' and thinking man the internet is going to be so cool in 20 years and instead of being totally l33t its just a place for white guys named noah to play fantasy football and pix of cats. so i can understand people who conceive of their world as being this diminishing, threatened place. i mean every darkweb chan ive ever been on is just people asking for advice on how to kill themselves, the core of #gamergate just makes me think of these dudes who are so sad and lonely and toxic and just severed from rl, from the norms and frames of reference that make sense to the people who live there. idk this stuff makes me so sad

Yeah, a lot of this stuff is straight ressentiment on the level of NRO-zealotry. I can't remember if Frank Schaeffer or whoever coined the term but we're looking at another case of people being "victimized by modernity." Shit has changed and they're just beginning to twig that everything ain't what it was.

Michel Houellebecq wrote that HP Lovecraft had to "fail at life" before he could start churning out weird horror of a cosmic scope, but these guys don't exhibit jackshit for creative ability to filter or sublimate all that internal discontent into anything other than increasingly graphic threats. I don't necessarily think that in 20 years they'll all be those militia types who move to N.Idaho and broadcast on shortwave radio, but I'm damnsure plenty will have shared ideological & narrative aspects.

There is also a fair amount of "No, obviously things should change, but organically, as the market demands, not with these SJW's coming in with their jackboots and dfgdkdmlkmnlgdfgds"

Was thinking yestreday how similar to 'gaming' these targeted email and harassment campaigns are

Like w/r/t the advertisers, taking a form letter and spamming it to dozens of advertisers and being good at finding email contacts / copying and pasting and changing names efficiently

The positive feedback loop that happens when Intel bows out of Gamasutra or when Gawker's advertisers get shook and #gamergaters think yes, I helped make that happen

Not too different than doing a raid in WoW maybe and teaming up on a boss

ahh these editors notes are very classic

What Male Game Developers Think of #GamerGate
THE ESCAPIST STAFF | 10 OCTOBER 2014 12:30 PM

Editor's Note: We have deleted the timeline originally presented in this article to avoid editorial opinion as much as possible. The goal of this introduction was to present some context behind these interviews, not to comment on the issues presented. We have also updated the title (the art is being updated at the moment) to "What Male Game Developers Think of #Gamergate" and encourage you to read the companion piece "Female Game Developers Make Statements on GamerGate, which was presented separately and anonymously at the request of those developers. (Exception: Crowned Daemon Studios includes both genders but is grouped with this list.) The goal was to offer game developers of all kinds a chance to have their voices be heard. If you're interested in the official stance of The Escapist, you may read these editorials.

Editor's Note #2: We have removed the testimony of Slade Villena, known as RogueStar, after we've received evidence that he has harassed some contributors to The Escapist. Due to our strong policy against all harassment and abuse, Villena's opinions will no longer be presented alongside those of his colleagues.

Editor's Note #3: We have removed the testimony of James Desborough, after we've received evidence that he has harassed some contributors to The Escapist. Due to our strong policy against all harassment and abuse, Desborough's opinions will no longer be presented alongside those of his colleagues.

Editor's Note #4: The Escapist removed the interviews of Slade Villena and James Desborough due to complaints (accompanied by what appears to be actual evidence) that Messrs. Villena and Desborough have harassed members of the online community, including certain of our contributors. While we cannot speak to the legitimacy of such of complaints, due to our strong policy prohibiting harassment and abuse we thought it best to simply remove the interviews.
