Bands responsible according to the internet: WASP, In Flames, Pantera, Twisted Sister, Megadeth, Testament, "all the support bands" (on 2/9/2007 at Scotiabank Place in Ottawa, ON, Canada that seems to be Unearth and Thine Eyes Bleed), Mastodon, Machine Head, Primus, Lamb Of God, Wehrmacht, Manowar and Bring Me The Horizon, several of them mentioned more than once.

Though to be fair, in their Behind the Music the members of Def Leppard talked about getting blowjobs offstage during the drum solo, so it might be referring to that.

I could definitely see this. Fucking Tiny Tim could have blown Zeppelin off the stage at the concert where they filmed Song Remains the Same. Plus Grand Funk were pretty spectacular live.

The Van Halen tour is legendary for breaking up the Ozzy era band. The only people that say Bang blew Sabbath off the stage are the guys in Bang. BOC vs. Sabbath would have been a sight to see.

Gentle Giant apparently performed the amazing feat of blowing Crimson off the stage before Fripp and co. came on:

Next up was the surprise of the night. Gentle Giant came out and played the most complex, pristine music I had ever heard or seen performed live. They played about 32 different instruments between the five of them. The roadies stood at the sides of the stage and just threw them instruments constantly. They weren't just blowing "parts", but actually played each of these sometimes "unrelated" instruments on a virtuoso level. All of them played on the drum set at the same time and were completely coordinated musically. The recorder fugues they played, as well as their totally original vocal arrangements were jaw dropping. They performed with incredible showmanship and excitment and whipped the crowd into heights unknown. They totally blew King Crimson off the stage.

By the time King Crimson came out, the audience was completely drained. Robert Fripp the leader/guitar player sat on a high stool the entire night, John Wetton played bass and sang lead vocals, David Cross played the Mellotron and violin and Bill Bruford was terrific on his drumset. Their songs were long and drawn out. They just didn't connect with the audience. When someone hollered out for Robert Fripp to introduce the band, he dismissed the request by saying, "That is not important, however what is important is the name of our next song"

responses very much in characteer

Sayeth Ginger Baker:

Okay…um…some people say…How much of Fela’s sound, do you think, came from James Brown, and how much of it was his own thing?

100% of it was his own thing. Completely his own thing. Absolutely nothing to do with James Brown.

Really?

Fela blew James Brown off the stage when he came to Nigeria.

Squeezing through the crowds in front of The National Gallery I finally saw Dave Cousins (and acoustic) at the foot of the Column giving all he had in the way only he can. He only performed two or three songs, but blew Joan Baez off the stage and made my day. I also met my future wife for the first time that night, and I can still remember what Dave was wearing.

And now a word about Rockpile, one of the best bands there ever was.

Starting around 1977, for a bit more than 10 years there, I saw just about every rock n roll band worth seeing if they played NYC. There are few shows I missed in venues huge or tiny.

I can tell you with confidence that one of the best ever was: Nick Lowe and Dave Edmunds' Rockpile.

A precursor version of Rockpile on the Stiffs Live tour doing Heart Of the City

Doing my favorite version of Promised Land which is one of my favorite rock n roll tunes ever.

Doing the great Elvis Costello composition Girls Talk

Doing a great mid-tempo Marty Robins cover Singin THe Blues

Heart of the City was one of the highlights of their show but there's no real great version on the Youtubes

They were never not "on" and when they were "on" they were as good as it got. It was sad for any band they opened for. I saw them blow Van Morrison right off the stage. They blew Blondie off the stage and into the next county. Keif Richards got on stage with them and was pretty superfluous. Nick Lowe, Dave Edmunds, Billy Bremner and Terry Williams. What a combination of rock and pop.

More clips: I knew the Bride I Knew The Bride Crawling From the Wreckage Queen of Hearts

Lowe & Edmunds were the stars, but watching these reminds me how Terry Williams was one of the all time best rock solid drummers there ever was to anchor a rock n roll band.

one last thing: if you can find it, get the Stiff Live Stiffs record. It has the precursor Rockpile doing "I Knew The Bride" and a great great little tune called Let's Eat

Yeah OK, that's all the Rolling Stone rock acts done.

This particular type of one-upmanship bullshit may have flourished with Guitar Men Making Great Art. Dunno if people used the phrase in music before the '60s. (It seems to be used less in jazz, maybe because it's a more collaborative thing.) There's a fake example in a recent novel set in WW2, someone saying that a trumpeter "could blow Beethoven off the stage" in occupied Paris, which would've been truly impressive in the circumstances.

Or is there any claim that's more batshit than this one? (from MayTheRockBeWithYou.com)

(Papa Roach) ... They’ve toured with pretty much every band in the world and in most cases blown them off the stage.
