Loved their EPs in 2009-10 - think "All Around And Away We Go" was my favourite track by anyone that year - then found their first LP in 2011 to be a huge let-down, just a few highlights and "Saturday Sunday" was just terrible. Will try to check out their new stuff with an open mind.

So good. One of my late discoveries (Thanks to Johnny Fever for having it in his albums of the year list) but already very high on my own list.
― Kitchen Person, Tuesday, 2 December 2014 01:49 (nine years ago) link
first four tracks completely devastate me at this point
― emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Tuesday, 2 December 2014 01:54 (nine years ago) link
Yeah the first half is just gorgeous. The second half seems so unexpected after those songs but it somehow it really works as a whole album.
― Kitchen Person, Tuesday, 2 December 2014 01:58 (nine years ago) link
i like everything on it

This LP is now my favourite this year, not a weak spot on it, glad they've stopped trying to be an indie band and embraced this strung-out 5am post-disco thing, her voice deserves it.
― Camaraderie at Arms Length, Tuesday, 2 December 2014 03:23 (nine years ago) link
i found this album very pleasant to listen to and every time it has gone straight in one ear and out the other
― lex pretend, Tuesday, 2 December 2014 09:29 (nine years ago) link
easy glistening album of the year
― Tim F, Tuesday, 2 December 2014 11:36 (nine years ago) link
I think that's the reason for the change but i still don't like it, it feels like they had a messy car crash with Mr Mr.

Tim do you mean the K-pop band MR.MR???
― 龜, Tuesday, 2 December 2014 11:41 (nine years ago) link
Sadly I meant Mr Mister of "Broken Wings".

Pretty sure I overlooked this on the basis of the terrible name too.
― The Reverend, Thursday, 29 January 2015 23:02 (nine years ago) link
nearly overlooked it on the basis of 1) their name 2) the previous associations i had re: their sound 3) who was writing about them

― emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Thursday, 29 January 2015 23:13 (nine years ago) link
it has this really wonderful dual quality of being smoky and precise, dreamy and present

yeah it's one of the best things to happen ever. still remember the feeling hearing 'in the house of yes' for the first time, when the disco strings came in.

not too in to the silent-shout-style tracks on the back half of this record, but overall its def my favorite discovery from the EOY top 77 polls.
max already invoked bjork, which is what i hear the most-- specifically the lush floral stuff from "Post"

"Color Your Life" from the Twin Sister days is one of my favorite pieces of music this decade. I guess they're not giving it away free anymore but it's very much worth whatever price they're asking.

SO good.
Not the most active band though, eh? What do they do in their non-MTS time that keeps them from releasing more fantastic music anyway?

IIRC, Andrea announced a multiple sclerosis diagnosis prior to the album release in 2014.

wish I had known, I'd have bought you a pint! I spent 9/10ths of the set unable to see anything, the choice to have a "stage" that's barely an inch higher than the crowd space means a 5ft5 wisp like me either needs to be down the front or resign themselves to the view of the back of somebody's head.
― boxedjoy, Friday, 19 November 2021 21:29 (two years ago) link
even the tracks i wasn't as enthusiastic about pre-release sound so much better in the context of the full album

Friday May 12, 2023 at 8pmMr Twin Sister at The David Rubenstein Atrium at Lincoln Center, NYCFree to enter until at capacity, Arrive at least 1/2 hour early for your best chance to get in!Seating and entry are first-come, first-served; the line will form at the Atrium’s entrance on Broadway, between 62nd and 63rd Street. Brooklyn-based indie pop band Mr Twin Sister have headlined sets at Elsewhere, Warsaw, and Bowery Ballroom. The group's Lincoln Center debut reimagines the space as an exclusive rock club, minus the cover. Mr Twin Sister's early EPs announced the band's signature brand of musically omnivorous dreamy disco, but they first gained international recognition when Kendrick Lamar sampled their single "Meet the Frownies" for his breakout hit "The Recipe." Four albums later, the quartet has established themselves as among the scene's most respected and influential institutions. Pitchfork said Mr Twin Sister's latest release, 2022's Upright and Even, "exists to be danced to... each song is self aware, mature and sexy." Bring a partner or find one at the Atrium for a night of ecstasy.
