Everyone after Dave Brubeck is an opera singer; I think they've all sung at the Met...?

Wes HI DEREson (HI DERE), Tuesday, 17 March 2009 15:06 (fifteen years ago) link

25 or 6 to 4.

Mark G, Tuesday, 17 March 2009 15:08 (fifteen years ago) link

Yeah sur, I've done a lot of professional/professional-level ensemble singing gigs, both concert/oratorio and fully-staged opera.

The last thing I did (outside of pro church choir stuff) was this: http://www.operaboston.org/operas_marksman.php

Gonna troll this thread by voting for Amy Grant and imploring everyone else to do likewise.

wow I suck at namedropping ;_;

Wes HI DEREson (HI DERE), Tuesday, 17 March 2009 17:19 (fifteen years ago) link

One of my former conductors was so infamous for his inveterate namedropping that he became a punchline for us. he would always talk about some fabulous dinner he had with various famous classical/opera people that culminated in a totally banal event; it was like he ended every story with "... and then I asked Flicka to pass me the salt!"

(tehr you are probably going to be the only one who will find that funny)

Wes HI DEREson (HI DERE), Tuesday, 17 March 2009 17:23 (fifteen years ago) link

i find that funny because Flicka is a horse.

I voted Vanessa Williams because I was seriously angry when she was de-throned as Miss America. Apparently I am still not over it.

Sara R-C, Tuesday, 17 March 2009 18:00 (fifteen years ago) link

Feel like I should cast my vote for Roberta Flack, but instead I'm gonna vote for Stephanie Blythe, who I am looking forward to seeing in Il Trittico next year.

Don't know where the nickname came from, but did you guys know that "flicka" means girl in Swedish? Wherefore Abba's Swedish language version of "Honey Honey" has the lyric "honey honey flicka lilla."

a nice voice on that one!

did anyone hear flicka on wait wait, don't tell me? it was kind of awesome.

tehresa, Tuesday, 17 March 2009 20:49 (fifteen years ago) link

I haven't crossed paths with him, no. There's an off chance I will be in an opera with Stephanie Blythe next season but it's kind of up in the air at the moment.

actually Opera Boston is gonna be the shit next season: http://www.operaboston.org/operas_0910season.php

Wes HI DEREson (HI DERE), Tuesday, 17 March 2009 20:51 (fifteen years ago) link

oooh. she was sooo good in orfeo!

tehresa, Tuesday, 17 March 2009 20:52 (fifteen years ago) link

Yeah, she sang "In The Beginning" for us back in... 2002? 2003? Fucking phenomenal.

Wes HI DEREson (HI DERE), Tuesday, 17 March 2009 20:54 (fifteen years ago) link

like she seriously changed 'che faro' for me. i sang it in college and apparently was good at it, but i always thought it was boring. hearing it with more mature musicality and her voice/phrasing completely renewed my <3 for it!

tehresa, Tuesday, 17 March 2009 20:55 (fifteen years ago) link

Probably the one good thing to having done limited, private voice study and having that primarily be in German art songs is that I've had few opportunities to have my ego crushed by hearing someone else blow a song I've performed out of the water in a way I could only dream of doing. On the downside, though, I don't have many examples of what I could do with the few songs I know.

ah well

Lamp, Tuesday, 17 March 2009 21:29 (fifteen years ago) link

aw!

I still can't believe Shawn Colvin had the nerve to roll up on the Boston Pops in an ugly sweater that looked like it was made of hairballs and act all diva-ish. Every time she made a mistake in rehearsal, she would bring everything to a halt and whine at KL to make the orchestra follow her. It was fucking terrible.

Wes HI DEREson (HI DERE), Wednesday, 18 March 2009 17:11 (fifteen years ago) link

this reminds me of when m4ndy p4tinkin showed up 45 min before curtain (preventing us from being able to open the house on time), switched around his stage set-up during his sound check, then had the nerve to talk shit about our venue during the show about how the piano wasn't in the right place and we couldn't accommodate the way he really wanted to interact with his beloved audience.

tehresa, Wednesday, 18 March 2009 17:30 (fifteen years ago) link

not that diva behavior should ever be encouraged/excused, but at least M4ndy P4tinkin is famous

its a sweater!

ice cr?m, Wednesday, 18 March 2009 19:38 (fifteen years ago) link

Yeah, don't wear a sweater when you're performing with the Pops. Rehearsal is one thing, wear whatever you want to that, but spring the $80 for a non-embarrassing concert top, you whiny harpy.
