they always did other things than that, though.

Matos-Webster Dictionary (M Matos), Wednesday, 24 August 2005 00:38 (eighteen years ago) link

yeah, i know that.

vahid (vahid), Wednesday, 24 August 2005 00:38 (eighteen years ago) link

is the fact that dfa release dance-punk why some people don't like them? dance-punk reads like pastiche to me and while i can see why that accusation may be leveled at them, i think there is more to it than that. (proven in the execution, usually, but if it's not your cup of tea then fair enough - i mean i really like the juan maclean album and that's a different sort of execution altogether, not some studio-muso thing)

tricky (disco stu), Wednesday, 24 August 2005 00:49 (eighteen years ago) link

duh. of course you do. sorry. (xpost)

no, i doubt it. if anything, prob the opposite (it's why some people DO like them) ... but i think at this point they've sort of been (unfairly) tagged as "the dance punk label" and it's very cool to see that they're not letting themselves fall into a cul-de-sac with that.

vahid (vahid), Wednesday, 24 August 2005 00:56 (eighteen years ago) link

they talked about that very thing in the Simon Reynolds Voice feature last year--turning down work after the initial burst of attention in '02 so they could do pretty much what they wanted w/o pressure to be one thing.

Matos-Webster Dictionary (M Matos), Wednesday, 24 August 2005 00:59 (eighteen years ago) link

they've certainly been knocking out those remixes lately though.

jed_ (jed), Wednesday, 24 August 2005 01:03 (eighteen years ago) link

delia and gavin's full length sounds exciting. I'm with vahid on DFA. Also, I'm trying to not only see James Murphy as being DFA.

Jacobs (LolVStein), Wednesday, 24 August 2005 01:13 (eighteen years ago) link

they seem to be remixes of artists on the label though i am probably forgetting some.

"dance punk" seems very shallow, but i guess all genre labels are.

anyway, i bet the days of mars is good. i downloaded it, but haven't listened yet. i liked the "el monte" single. initiatic journey through the vibrational system of the planetary mind sums it up pretty well. heh.

tricky (disco stu), Wednesday, 24 August 2005 01:15 (eighteen years ago) link

I really like the second half of "Casual Friday".

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 24 August 2005 01:18 (eighteen years ago) link

they've remixed NiN, Blues Explosion, Chemical bros, Gorrilaz, Soulwax as well as Black Dice fairly recently. I'm not complaining though.

jed_ (jed), Wednesday, 24 August 2005 01:24 (eighteen years ago) link

oh yeah, i saw that limited nine inch nine inch nails single with the dfa remix and almost bought it for sheer novelty. what's the remix like?

FUCK. WRONG THREAD. SORRY.

Matos-Webster Dictionary (M Matos), Wednesday, 24 August 2005 01:36 (eighteen years ago) link

another crazy performance pic I see

jmeister (jmeister), Wednesday, 24 August 2005 01:37 (eighteen years ago) link

Matos called "Casual Friday" the best 15 minute disco tune ever recorded

It's great that this comment often turns up in blurbs/press releases accompanying the 12".

Vahid, you might dig the instrumental version of "Casual Friday" which sounds more like a DFA remix amd focuses on the disco strut guitar line.

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Wednesday, 24 August 2005 02:03 (eighteen years ago) link

I almost fainted when I saw they'd used the quote in the PR

Matos-Webster Dictionary (M Matos), Wednesday, 24 August 2005 02:15 (eighteen years ago) link

This D&G album is fantastic. Feels like I'm in a spaceship on the way to Mars.

glenny g2003 (glenny g2003), Wednesday, 24 August 2005 03:06 (eighteen years ago) link

Matos, what about "I Feel Love (Patrick Cowley megamix)"???!!!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 24 August 2005 03:07 (eighteen years ago) link

Actually, that's 16 minutes.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 24 August 2005 03:11 (eighteen years ago) link

Oh, I'm excited about this too!

Adam In Real Life (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 24 August 2005 03:15 (eighteen years ago) link

I like the original "IFL" better

Matos-Webster Dictionary (M Matos), Wednesday, 24 August 2005 03:32 (eighteen years ago) link

this is a great album now that im through it a couple times. very hypnotic at times and that last track is very tubular bells in its dramatic feel. i feel like i should be running somewhere important in the rain while i listen to it. possibly to cut a wire on a bomb or to catch a plane my soulmate is about to board. its great.

jmeister (jmeister), Wednesday, 24 August 2005 04:06 (eighteen years ago) link

when does this get released, anyway?

listening to the big boys after biscuit's death last week reminded me why so much of the 2000-era "punk funk" stuff is sooooo weak.

hstencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 24 August 2005 04:11 (eighteen years ago) link

Some of it reminds me of Brandi Ifgray's "Stargazer" but more expansive.

Adam In Real Life (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 24 August 2005 04:27 (eighteen years ago) link

I dig it, but I seem to be in the minority. It's very...rubbery, if that makes any sense. Lots of bleeps and egg shakers. Trent's vocals are slowed down and shifted off the beat just a tiny bit, which I think works.

Telephonething (Telephonething), Wednesday, 24 August 2005 04:28 (eighteen years ago) link

Who wouldn't love "Casual Friday"????

Oh, vahid, right.

Adam In Real Life (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 24 August 2005 04:30 (eighteen years ago) link

hstencil, A little YSI would be really nice of you.

Jacobs (LolVStein), Wednesday, 24 August 2005 06:16 (eighteen years ago) link

days of mars (and broken ear record) = the first dfa records I'v been really excited about in some time. awesome.

simon 803 (simon 803), Wednesday, 24 August 2005 06:21 (eighteen years ago) link

anyone seen the cover art yet? i havent...

petesmith (plsmith), Wednesday, 24 August 2005 12:46 (eighteen years ago) link

I'm with vahid when it comes to the BLF track.

Andy_K (Andy_K), Wednesday, 24 August 2005 12:53 (eighteen years ago) link

that song is definitely in my top 5 singles of the year (i know DFA2 came out in 04, but the single was 05...).

petesmith (plsmith), Wednesday, 24 August 2005 13:02 (eighteen years ago) link

BLF are fantastic; I had no idea there were some many DFA-hataz.

haha "Rise" is currently reminding me of a dub version of Fischerspooner's Boredoms cover. I need a chance to play this LOUD at a club or something (er, prior/post people-on-the-dancefloor obv).

etc, Thursday, 25 August 2005 03:35 (eighteen years ago) link

I like this, tho definitely in a similar field as Mother Mallard, Mike Oldfield, Tangerine Dream. Actually, this is a bit less "dancey" than I was hoping, but still a good listen.

willem (willem), Thursday, 25 August 2005 17:30 (eighteen years ago) link

I like Casual Friday, but the guy singing is one of the worst singers I've ever heard.

recovering optimist (Royal Bed Bouncer), Thursday, 25 August 2005 17:32 (eighteen years ago) link

so again, i know such a gauche question, but when's the release date again?

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 25 August 2005 17:36 (eighteen years ago) link

the female vocals technically aren't so great either ("you must confessssssssss"), but that only adds to it imo. i like how nervous and shaky they sound when everything else drops out. it adds to the sexual tension in the track.

xpost

petesmith (plsmith), Thursday, 25 August 2005 17:49 (eighteen years ago) link

"Black Spring" is fantastic.

Adam In Real Life (nordicskilla), Thursday, 25 August 2005 17:50 (eighteen years ago) link

thanks, mr. smith.

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 25 August 2005 18:11 (eighteen years ago) link

The totally prejudiced opinion at my house is that it's way better than the new Earth plunk.

Ian Christe (Ian Christe), Thursday, 25 August 2005 18:23 (eighteen years ago) link

saw a hilarious video of them jumping out of a beat-up Thunderbird and dancing to Vangelis's "Come On" on repeat. think "Casual Friday" was made somewhat in its image.

RIYL: The scene in "Risky Business" where Tom Cruise is having subruban night-sex with Rebecca DeMornay and the doors fly open and leaves blow in; or the scene in "Thin Blue Line" where Randall Adams goes over the policeman's murder, post-"Swinging Cheerleaders" screening.

Legroom at the Vista (Bent Over at the Arclight), Thursday, 25 August 2005 20:23 (eighteen years ago) link

Ah, I finally got to listen to this. I love it. "Black Spring" jumps out at me as my favorite track so far.

RIYL: The scene in "Risky Business" where Tom Cruise is having subruban night-sex with Rebecca DeMornay and the doors fly open and leaves blow in;

First of all, what does RIYL stand for? I can usually figure these out, but this one has me stumped.

Also, I'm a big fan of the Tangerine Dream song from Risky Business, "Love on a Real Train", and even a lot of the copy-cat ambient songs. "Black Spring" reminds me of it. The Global Communications song "8:07", and the ambient remix of Chicane's "Offshore", are my two favorite "Love on a Real Train" wannabes. Any of those songs could be substituted in the movie for that scene (maybe not the Chicane one - too upbeat).

i feel like i should be running somewhere important in the rain while i listen to it.

Hahah: nice image.
