Over 3 years later and nobody's answered the man's question. I don't think "DJ STILL N" cares about your favorite roots tracks.

how did this turn into a "my winamp playlist of random napster reggae is better'n urs!" thread?

Culture--Two Sevens Clash

one year passes...

The Various Artists Mojo Magazine compilation that came with the issue with Bob Marley on the cover is really freaking spectacular. I started to think I'd been listening to the wrong reggae artists all along. Then I went to a UB40 gig Fri. night and low and behold they played this whole Mojo comp over the P.A. before any bands came on. It was fantastic.

Now my friend told me the Culture album is not to be missed. I haven't heard the whole album.

Yeah I told my friend that I'd heard the title track, right, cause they said Peel liked that one a lot, and he said "oh that's not the best track on the album" so I am going to try the album.

But christ, this Mojo reggae sampler is dreamy. Horace Andy = "Steal away girl" right isn't it him or someone else singing? Oh my god! That shit is the DEAL!

Bimble, Sunday, 12 August 2007 21:41 (sixteen years ago) link

Hell, it's not Horace Andy at all is it? Sorry.

Bimble, Sunday, 12 August 2007 21:42 (sixteen years ago) link

You want proto-Specials, baby we got it all on this comp.!

Burning Spear "Marcus Garvey" without which the Specials could not have been.

Speaking of Horace Andy, what about Spying Glass? It rocks.

I listen mainly to reggae and rocksteady from the late 60s to the early 80s, when the songs really mattered.

Probably in one of those lists up there already but if not how about The Best Dressed Chicken in Town by Dr. Alimantado or News Flash by a relatively down to earth, though still excellent, Lee Scratch Perry. Or the wonderfully weird, lo-Fi meisterpiece Free Up The Prisoners also by the genius Scratch Perry. Anyway, of course this is all scratching (no pun intended)the surface. There's literally a million candidates. Enjoy!
