Untrue's definitely quite flabby - I've made a seven track edit of it which works much better IMHO.

The first album is too, frankly, just the highs aren't quite as high for me as the seconds.

I could hear an argument that Boroughs was the best thing he did, just cuz it's the only thing that's not chock with filler. "Nite Train" is really quite nice too.

i can understand burial being a gateway for people into dubstep but i do hope a lot of the converts make the effort to step through that gateway...

i'm still not fully indoctrinated into dubstep, just a little bit of flirting now and again. would like to know more, but admittedly burial is the main flex and archangel seems to be the "obvious" choice. need to get down to stink like sock in cambridge and experience it really loud. i saw some warm up act who came on before public enemy at primavera last year - don't remember their names but chuck d was going mental about them. sounded quite different from any uk dubstep i'd heard. is there even a scene in the US?

Hey Lex (or indeed anyone), can you recommend any albums in the genre beyond Skream/Burial/Benga/Vex'd? I've got a few comps and shit as well.

this was actually The Bomb Squad DJs

and they were playing all UK dubstep. it was surprising.

Hank Shocklee was going on about DMZ and shit in some interview last year and played a night with them in New York iirc.

Thanks, I'll check those out. I think it has the potential to be more of an album genre than, say, DnB.

I've been torrenting a few random dubstep packages, and they tend to be full of cheesy wobwobwob stuff.

2562's Aerial is quite good, and the upcoming album by Martyn (Great Lengths) sounds like it'll be pretty good.

dont bother with the albums. just go to getdarker or google a bit for old rinse fm sets. those are best.

also, bomb squad are vietnamese.

the mixes on their myspace are kinda cool tho its a bit warmer than uk dubstep and has more of a 90s vibe in places.

i relistened to the first ep this morning (thru pc speakers admittedly) and am surprised the massive attack-type crowd caught on so slowly.

How long did it actually take? The first album was pretty big new IIRC.

Both Round Black Ghosts comps are pretty good too, chap (second I guess got a bit of a bad name for including a slew of older tracks, but that won't matter to you.) Kode9's album/Dubstep All Stars 4 might be also be your cup of tea if you can tolerate Spaceape.

True. 'Kindred' (the track) is also excellent, as is 'Street Halo'. I think that EP definitively put to rest this notion that he only had one trick up his sleeve (which was never really true to begin with). Also, I don't understand how some people think 'Archangel' is his only good track. Nonsense.

Prior to its release I was fairly sad about the state of texturally focused and experimental electronic music. Much of what I loved from the ambient and IDM scenes in the 90's and early 00's dissolved either into smug glitch heavy esoteric masturbation, or cross genre experiments into indie/folk/world music/hip hop. Much of the electronic music that I was enjoying at the time was from the electro revival and a lot of nu disco.

Then the first two Burial albums dropped, within about a year at that (!!), and it felt like finally texture, atmosphere and lush melancholy was back and being painted with entirely new brushes. I'll never forget how this record inspired me to explore and discover a whole new wave of psychedelic beats and led me to many great discoveries and creative results.

Crazy it's been ten years already.

'Ghost Hardware' got robbed.

Burial has released some great music but none of it since the albums, and much as it's not his fault he has legions of imitators, there is a lot of hacky blubstep stuff still being churned out that just leaves me numb now.

Am I alone in thinking the S/T album is both better and "more important" than Untrue? I get that Untrue is Burial in sui generis mode and was an important crossover moment which set the template for so many subsequent producers (not to mention legions of imitators), where the first album is more "Burial does dubstep", but to me the impact of the latter felt so much bigger.

You mean Paradise Circus? I’ve only heard the Gui boratto remix and I love it haven’t heard the burial one.

Young Death is one of my favourite Burials.

Moka, yeah "Paradise Circus". Burial's mix is pretty sublime, like an aural tranquilizer.

His two new tracks are some of my favorite things he's done period.

It's way too much to expect someone to change the face of their genre with every release, just because it happened once (or twice!!) before.

I think my answer to the imaginary new poll in my head would be Come Down to Us. I think it's the most complete expression of one aspect of his aesthetic - the sentimental - and find it painfully affecting at times.

That would be a fun poll; you should do it. I'd probably vote for Come Down to Us too, but Stolen Dog destroys me almost as much.
