Yes, it has rapping, often v clever and memorable rapping

ILOVEMASONNA (Whiney G. Weingarten), Tuesday, 14 October 2014 22:21 (nine years ago) link

whiney striving to see rap through the tiniest of reductive pinholes is one of the most depressing developments of 2014

snrub goin up on a tuesday (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 14 October 2014 22:22 (nine years ago) link

i mean, do you want me to come right out and say "I don't get this" because I don't get this

all i know is internet ppl saying shit like I HEAR YOUNG THUG AND THEN IM OFF TO A CLOUD IN THE SKY and then reasonable dudes like Jordan and Drakey saying "no, it's good" and then never explaining whats good about it except that liking it for its weirdness is reductive and there's literally no quotable lines

ILOVEMASONNA (Whiney G. Weingarten), Tuesday, 14 October 2014 22:25 (nine years ago) link

plus i see lots of vines about that part in "lifestyle" that's especially incoherant

ILOVEMASONNA (Whiney G. Weingarten), Tuesday, 14 October 2014 22:27 (nine years ago) link

and i know, like O)H HA GET OFF THE INTERNET but i've heard thugger on the radio too, idk

ILOVEMASONNA (Whiney G. Weingarten), Tuesday, 14 October 2014 22:27 (nine years ago) link

thats how u can tell its good need to use vine metrics

thugger is a genius tho who has pretty much a new style for very day of his life but im not gonna quote lines cause i h8 that

lag∞n, Tuesday, 14 October 2014 22:28 (nine years ago) link

it's not that surprising that it's divisive is it?

i don't think garbly sing-song voices count as "weird" any more but they don't exactly have universal appeal

lex pretend, Tuesday, 14 October 2014 22:41 (nine years ago) link

actually, they do since he's finding both critical and pop success, we are actually outliers

it's very pop-oriented rap but the lyrics are important in an untraditional way (though in a more traditional way than you are implying)

if you want to listen to your old droog go listen to your old droog. there are still lines that pop out here though -- "she say she can do the same thing as five bitches / so i went and fired them five bitches" for instance. just little funny things that stick out. this isn't rock em sock em robot punchline music but... that's not the only way to listen to rap?

but do you not feel what "givenchy" is supposed to evoke even if it doesn't ground itself in Rap?

snrub goin up on a tuesday (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 14 October 2014 22:44 (nine years ago) link

thug turned the weirdness up quite a bit over like wayne or future, the first time i heard him shouting abt how he needed a cup twice (v funny clever line btw) i was like is this a real thing irl perople are into but now it seems pretty normal

lag∞n, Tuesday, 14 October 2014 22:44 (nine years ago) link

even though young thug does rap rap on that song xp

snrub goin up on a tuesday (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 14 October 2014 22:45 (nine years ago) link

thugga has gotten less weird over time, on his earlier mixtapes he was rapping in diff languages

snrub goin up on a tuesday (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 14 October 2014 22:46 (nine years ago) link

but if you can't appreciate the greatness of "lifestyle".... \(o_O)/

snrub goin up on a tuesday (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 14 October 2014 22:47 (nine years ago) link

or the overall very obvious and traditional dopeness of "flava"

I don't wanna fight but, this. I've listened to a number of YT mixtapes on recommendation from people whose taste I trust, but...I'm not feeling it. I want to understand the thrill, really, I do. But the beats sound muddy, the raps seem muddy (with the occasional hot line or chorus breaking through). Not just Thug, a lot of bubbling up new rap seems to fall in this vein and it's just baffling to me what people hear in it, or maybe I'm turning into my dad.

(Side Note: "Picachu" is just alright, odd and whatever but after hearing it twice I shrugged and didn't need to hear it again.)

lag∞n, Tuesday, 14 October 2014 22:51 (nine years ago) link

The "is he or isn't he gay" angle of YT is fascinating, though, regardless of whether he's peeking from the closet or just punking everyone

RAP GAME SHANI DAVIS (Raymond Cummings), Tuesday, 14 October 2014 22:52 (nine years ago) link

"lifestyle" sort of epitomises what i hate, just sonically, about young thug. obviously i don't care about trad rap or proper lyricism or whatever it's like this insistence on a really basic annoying melody by people who don't sound good singing...idgi.

"try me" is probably the first & only young thug verse that's properly blown me away, i feel even whiney would get it

lex pretend, Tuesday, 14 October 2014 22:56 (nine years ago) link

I feel like ppl have implanted false memories in themselves of their experience w 90s NY rap, like I didn't catch most of what ghost or Rae were saying the first hundred times it's just like over years of repetition it becomes a part of your dna and you're reticent to give a new record that kind of time. But the more I listen the more certain lyrics jump out and evoke a feeling or make me laugh

I did think noz's tweet about hearing young thug and the world dissolves (which I assume Whiney is referring to about the cloud in the sky) was a lil ott but it doesn't distract for me because as Jordan said he's actually seemed less weird as he's gotten a handle on his art, as his work has become more musical

deej loaf (D-40), Tuesday, 14 October 2014 23:01 (nine years ago) link

There is def a magic eye effect with his rapping but I feel the same way about keef so ymmv

deej loaf (D-40), Tuesday, 14 October 2014 23:03 (nine years ago) link

maybe noz just dissolves into a cloud super easy, its a spectrum

http://tumblinerb.com/post/74588959446/1017-thug-topped-your-pazz-and-jop-have-you-written

not sure if this accurately describes his role on the rich gang tape in particular. i think that's more a quan and london vehicle to be honest and as mentioned up thread it's also more musical than aggressive but you can still hear that sort of kinetic energy at points like all over "givenchy" on the whole CREW CUT explosion on his "flava" verse.

anyway sometimes i get excited about music and try to briefly describe that feeling in 140 characters whiney if you ever need further clarification on one of these tweets feel free to contact me directly instead of sending off passive aggressive ilx smoke signals oh also can you explain to me why primus makes you happy because primus doesn't make me especially happy and that makes me mad

no, please

lag∞n, Wednesday, 15 October 2014 01:59 (nine years ago) link

That tumblin erb post is def the most cogent argument I've read, and I can definitely hear that erratic push-pull energy in his cadence — which is, of course, the most electrifying thing about thugger. But iunno, he def sort of plays the subtle card since his beats are always so stoner-stoner-pass-me-the-hookah chillax. It's kind of the same reason Sonic Youth never clicked with me since they're supposedly this wild, noisy act; but it's all controlled in this chill mumble-rock music. Some people would call that maturity, I guess, but it just kind of strikes me as energy-suckin

I do like "Danny Glover" and "Picacho"

deej loaf (D-40), Wednesday, 15 October 2014 02:15 (nine years ago) link

I'm not sure I see how this is more a quan project than a thugger one... Thug feels more central to this and is the one w the longstanding London on the track affiliation iirc

deej loaf (D-40), Wednesday, 15 October 2014 02:17 (nine years ago) link

Why the fuck are we talking about Primus btw. The same dudes behind Wynona's Big Brown Beaver or w/e. That same track people were including on comedy CD-Rs you'd burn for your friends in 2001.

yeah booming post

it's really something i like about Young Thug that he's so unconcerned with making every punchline land -- a lot of things have clear internal logic like "it's my time like Flava" but he doesn't spell it out with a reference to Flava Flav's clocks. it's like the opposite of Drake's Papoose-style overexplained lines like "she said she workin' for Walgreens but not in the store, at the head office/ the head was so good it makes sense why you work at the head office."

some dude, Wednesday, 15 October 2014 11:45 (nine years ago) link

Hahaha is that a real line

In one Papoose mixtape Remi has a song about her & Pap and she says "I give give three holes like a three ring binder" anyway now u know that
